History student.
I do research on Byzantium and like to draw thingies about it.
(also, the occasional fan art and other aimless stuff of the like)
This has been playing on a non-stop loop in my head and I thought you might enjoy it too:
Ah yes, very nice! Thanks!
In exchange, I would’ve pointed you to what I’m listening on repeat atm, but that's the Murder Drones ost, so not exactly the same vibe...
So instead, here’s a Byzantine equivalent of frustrated tantrum -I mean, longing love (written by that rascal Paul the Silentiary):
“Doris pulled one thread from her golden hair,
And bound my hands with it, making me a prisoner.
At first I laughed of those light fetters of fair Doris,
But finding I had not strength to break them,
I began to moan as one held tight by galling irons.
And now, I am hung on a hair
and ever follow where my mistress drags me.”
Hah! Definitely a different vibe! ![]()
Not even here for the love poetry, I'm just rocking out to that hammered dulcimer. ![]()
Huh, thanks for introducing me to Paul the Silentiary, I hadn't heard of him before! Reading his poem about Hagia Sophia does make me wonder what it looked like in its hey-day, when even its collapsing shell is so impressive. So he's like, what, the Justinian-era Catullus?
I think Catullus was way more disruptive (and conceited!) than Paul, who didn’t aspire to revolutionize poetry. Although his rank, office and the imperialy sanctioned ekphrasis of Hagia Sophia do show he was recognized at Justinian's court.
Him and his pal Agathias were just public officials who prided in their aristocratic ways, and writing elegies was “in” since the second sophistic, to the point that they’re not biographical, just bon mot and jokes.
This gallery is so awesome. I love everything. You style looks so awesome *_* Anatomy stylization is just top notch and details!!
Thank you kindly! I'm glad you like it!
Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great one!
