Bio
Your least favourite PHP hater’s least favourite programmer.
RetailMeNot Group DEI hire, building global shopper loyalty infrastructure from my snowy Fortress In Exile in Canada.
I used to write books and go to PHP conferences to shout at people to write tests for their PHP code. Still a legend in the eyes of some.

I have been discussing with other Elder Survivors of #PHP how hard it will now be for new devs to get to do the same networking that we were able to do during the Golden Age Of PHP Conferences of 2010-2016 and with the seeming demise of in-person user groups.
Maybe it is time I got back into mentoring. The two people I helped in the early 2010’s have gone on to have decent careers as programmers (one of them is currently my manager) and in these terribad times I can teach people how to survive on their terms.
Thank you to @dansup for pointing out the differences in free speech here in Canada
‘Freedom of speech in Canada guarantees freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression, including press freedom. While fundamental to democracy, this right is not absolute and is subject to "reasonable limits" under Section 1, such as restrictions on hate speech, defamation, and obscenity.’
About to give my talk “Writing Testable PHP Code In An World” at #confoo2026 so it’s time to get into character
“Well, you are a delicate flower” — Internet Widow’s response to me telling her I only see one other person here wearing a mask and it feels weird
@heiglandreas The bottle was successfully delivered to me, greatly appreciated.
This has to be the first time I have been to a hotel that offers a breakfast buffet that has it not open because not enough people are staying here 😬 (I can order off the menu)
Made it to my hotel for #confoo2026. Tired AND grumpy
After listening to a great podcast that reviews books I briefly thought of doing an online SciFi book club with my #PHP peeps an then I realized how easy I get lured back into being “busy” when I deliberately drop stuff to get control back
The idea of AI meant as a “capital strike” is fascinating to me
Sitting in my seat on the train for Montreal for #confoo2026
Made it to Toronto Union Station. Train to Montreal leaves in 1h10
The last time I was on a VIA train was when I spoke at PHPQuebec in 2009(!)
At the train station in the second-best London to start my trip to Montreal for ConFoo
The images of the US director of the FBI partying with the US men’s Olympic hockey team (and them letting him wear a gold medal) should be a reminder that rich white guys (which is what every single member of that team is) almost always side with facists.
Selfish rich person faces reduced consequences due to private medical care.

After an underwhelming performance at the Winter Olympics, already the anxious articles appear in the media about Canada getting worse results at the games.
The solution is simple — give athletes way more money and support and they will do better. If the people in charge want to spend money on corporate subsidies, pipelines, and guns, then our Olympic athletes will continue to scramble to find enough cold hard cash to support their efforts.
The average Canadian Olympian spent $25k of their own money to get to there. Ridiculous in a society that can generate so much wealth and support if they wanted to.
When I told mini-me I was thinking of switching away from an iPhone to GrapheneOS on a Pixel she said “I’m not using WhatsApp to talk to you so reconsider”
Here is the 3d printed case for the BTT Pi2 that will be running my Sovol SV08. I might swap out the fan on top as I have a quieter one that also has a very long cable for it. @3dprinting
Here is the page with the models I used. I did the bottom with no holes, the top for a 40mm fan, and found a different fan guards.
