Stats: Data about BurgeonLab

Background

I hope you will enjoy the data visualizations as much as I enjoyed myself when creating this page with Apache ECharts. This page is interactive and is best viewed on the desktop (tapping/pinching works on mobile, but is not as nice)—so try hovering to view more information or click to open the relevant links!

Note

This page relies on heavily on Apache ECharts, an open source, JavaScript visualization library, therefore JavaScript needs to be enabled on your browser to render the graphs.

To get a cool looking blog statistics page, I did a lot of self-learning with ECharts and Hugo to get what I want. But in April 2026, I discovered Micro.blog has a plugin that offered something very similar. The graphs in the publication spread section were inspired by @amit’s creation. I guess blog stats are fun and fascinating for bloggers!

When I get the chance, I will be sharing how this page is built, so you can have something similar! In the meantime, learn how to get one of these charts—the heatmap calendar—to display your own Hugo blogging data trends with the guide I wrote.

Definitions

• Long-form content: Content > 300 words
  • e.g. pages, weeknotes, blog posts, some notes or replies
• Microblog content: Content < 300 words
  • e.g. likes, photos, some notes

Calendar Heatmap

This GitHub-style calendar tracks days of activity on BurgeonLab. All content types are included.

• The colour gradient correlates to the total daily word count.
• Hovering over a day brings up a tooltip with the details of the post(s).
• Circular days indicate multiple entries are published that day. Clicking on those brings up a popup that lets you choose the entry to visit.
• Word count groups can be toggled on/off by clicking on the legend.
• For mobile users: Hover tooltips won’t work, but you can click on the squares to open a post. Also, scroll to the right to see the full year.

This bar chart shows an upward annual trend of long-form content.An accurate, custom word count of all content (excluding link URLs, inline code & code blocks).

Publishing Spread

Rhythm and patterns of all content since 2023.

Tags

Use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out. To navigate the treemap, click and drag. Use the reset button at the bottom to zoom out and re-center.

Data in this section are generated using Hugo calculations, and most of them are clickable to their respective content.

Sparklines

On list or archive pages, aka Hugo Sections/post type indexes, if you scroll to the bottom you’ll see a sparkline chart. The data points are generated from the publishing frequency, per month, for that particular post type. (Note: A section requires 2 or more posts for a line to appear.)
