UNC computer science researchers to lead core AI work in $20 million NSF renewal
September 14, 2026UNC CS researchers are part of a coalition of universities providing expertise for a National Science Foundation institute established to engage K-12 students and improve techniques for teaching science, technology, engineering and math. Last week, the NSF renewed the previous five-year, $20 million award for its AI Institute for Engaged Learning, which draws on the expertise of AI and education researchers there and at NC State, UNC, Vanderbilt, Indiana, and the nonprofit organization Digital Promise.

The Carolina team will help develop and implement the automation infrastructure that enables these AI-powered research environments, accelerating scientific discovery while expanding the range and complexity of chemical reactions that can be explored autonomously.
Thwarting Hidden Resume Hacks Targeting AI Hiring Tools
July 22, 2026An academic-industry collaboration featuring Assistant Professor Tianlong Chen identified 1 percent of resumes in a sample of 200,000 across multiple sectors as containing concealed instructions meant to exploit AI systems. Chen and his collaborators are developing several defensive strategies to combat prompt injection in resumes.
