Experience intimate live performances from South Sudanese Canadian vocalist and saxophonist INGIA, Ghanaian-born Afrobeat/Afro-fusion artist Konfam, and DJ Zuki, who will keep the energy moving throughout the evening.

Set against the iconic backdrop of WAG-Qaumajuq, the evening celebrates Black music, identity, community, and the diverse experiences of the African Diaspora.

This event is part of the National Black Canadians Summit, taking place in Winnipeg September 18–20, bringing together artists, elders, youth, leaders, policymakers, and change-makers from across Canada for three days of connection, dialogue, creativity, and action.

Join us for the opening of At the Knees of Our Ancestors, a new exhibit examining the history of enslavement and early Black life in Canada. The exhibit marks the first phase of a larger, ongoing initiative, the Ancestors Project.

The event begins at 2 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the exhibit and enjoy food, beverages, and live musical performances by INGIA and her quartet. The formal program includes remarks from exhibit curator Alia Aluma, along with other museum and community representatives.

INGIA joins CEC for the BRIEFLY release show at Sidestage, performing live with the band in celebration of the new EP. Having recorded saxophone on the project and vocals for the live vinyl session, INGIA brings a full-circle performance.

The night opens with a special duo performance by saxophonist INGIA, featuring music from her brand-new EP. With lyrical intensity and bold improvisation, she brings a fresh and compelling voice to today’s jazz landscape.

The Maude Fortier Quartet follows, presenting original compositions from Maude’s new album Echoes of Change, alongside other works that blend contemporary jazz with emotional depth, rhythmic vitality, and personal storytelling.

Together, these performances highlight the creativity, leadership, and artistry of women shaping the future of jazz—an inspiring and unforgettable night of music.

HERitage is a community centered arts gathering rooted in the identities, histories, and lived experiences of Black, Indigenous, POC, and underrepresented women in the arts. Our heritage shapes how we create, move, and exist and often informs the barriers we face within the arts scene. HERitage creates space to name those experiences, celebrate resilience, and build visibility together.

The evening will feature panel discussions with established and emerging Winnipeg-based creatives, centering conversations around identity, heritage, and navigating the arts as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) women. Live performances by an all-women's band featuring panellists and local creatives will follow, along with woman-owned vendors offering items, refreshments, and artwork on display.

HERitage is also a space for connection, collaboration, and care, inviting artists and community members to gather, network, and build toward a more inclusive arts landscape.
