Screenshot: Open Waters

Open Waters is a game in development designed to induce thalassophobia: the intense and supposedly irrational fear of large bodies of water. The teaser trailer had me clenched within seconds and that was before that thing even showed up.

You are LOST in Open Waters.

An insouciant capybara wanders through the Mato Grosso state legislature. Screengrab from video taken by Nayara Bueno.

Lawmakers in Mato Grosso, Brazil, find their work increasingly disrupted by capybaras wandering into the state legislature in Cuiaba, which was built next to a wildlife park. The large rodents, native to South America, are famously relaxed but not particularly interested in parliamentary procedure. — Read the rest

The Mamdani look-alike contest moved to the sidewalk on Sunday, August 30, 2026, after police shut down the initial gathering at Washington Square Park due to a lack of a permit, according to the Associated Press. The hurdle didn’t stop the crowd of hundreds from finding a new spot to crown the city’s best impersonator of NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The energy was high as the event, sponsored by the social media app Sonder, continued just outside the park boundaries to settle the question of who really wears the mayor’s face best. The winner of the day was Amadeo Fusca, a 40-year-old actor and comedian who walked away with a $100 prize. Fusca really leaned into the aesthetic, appearing in a suit with a New York Knicks jersey underneath.

Last day of the month still counts. Both time travel and outsider PoV are tropes I love so combinations are a treat.

The Stranger Inside My Son, by [archiveofourown.org profile] Mademoiselle_A, Modao Zushi/MDZS
80k, gen with background canon pairings
Summary: Jiang Cheng goes back in time and decides there are a lot of people he won't give a damn about in this new life.
But Jiang Fengmian doesn't know that.
Why I like it: Jiang Fengmian is the last person to realize that Jiang Cheng changed. He has no clue what is happening, and seeing the changes through his eyes is a lot of fun, with all the things he has no chance to understand but the reader of course does. I really enjoyed the fix-it, too.

panoramic by [archiveofourown.org profile] remrose, Project Hail Mary
10.8k, gen
Summary: "I'll keep you updated. In the meantime, go back to sleep. When you need to worry, I'll tell you."
"Heh." Ryland ran his hand down his face. "It's terrible you know that it actually makes me feel better. What would I do without you?"
"Explode at a colleague at a conference and get expelled from academia and become a middle school teacher." Eva said, promptly.
"Wow, you've thought about that way too hard." Ryland laughed. "Middle schoolers might not vape in class, though. Maybe I should switch."
"Let's not joke."
or: fourteen conversations where ryland grace doesn’t realize eva stratt is a time traveller
Why I like it: Ryland & Eva friendship <3 this was lovely. Do I think it is plausible, eeeh, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Guard by [archiveofourown.org profile] CheshireSense, Bleach
18k, Ichigo/Kisuke
Summary: Later, Kisuke will remember and tease, "Were you really obsessing over me, Ichigo? Oh my, I have my own personal stalker!", and get an elbow to the face for his troubles.
At the moment though, all he can think is I've impressed someone, and I'm safe, and - looking at his new lord - Who are you?
Why I like it: Another wonderful thing about time travel + outsider PoV is that it often comes hand in hand with competence porn, and this one, where Ichigo is part of the Shihouin clan and takes Kisuke as his ward, has that in wonderful spades.

A man was on his way home when police officers in Bridgeport, Connecticut, pulled him over after running his plate and finding that his rented vehicle had an expired car registration. However, the man alleged that the reason the officers ran his plate and pressed the issue was because of his skin color.

@kingofconnecticut4 shared the incident in a video on TikTok, which has since accumulated over 916,600 views, along with on-screen text that said, “THIS IS ME DRIVING WHILE BLACK IN AMERICA.” According to kingofconnecticut4, he was stopped at a red light when the officers driving behind him allegedly ran a plate check before confronting the TikToker.

online dress shopping (l) woman shares Aritzia experience (c) Aritzia storefront (r)

Shoppers return clothing for any number of reasons: Dresses not fitting, clothing not looking right, or colors not matching are a few. Most customers expect a swift return process when they bring an item in—not a debate over their transaction. But for one Aritzia customer, a return was anything but easy.

Alanis Koberlein (@alaniskay14) posted a video that received more than 717,000 views. In it, she describes how she tried to return a dress to Aritzia, only to be denied a full return to her card. The reason, she said, was because of a hidden catch in the retailer’s return policy.

*waves at everyone*
  1. Where did August go?! At the start of the month I was actually catching up on some stuff, and then time fell into a black hole again, and here we are.

  2. My mouse gave up the ghost, so I had to get a new one. (This one only lasted for four years, and I wouldn't bet on the new one lasting even that long ...)

  3. [community profile] guardian_wishlist is in sign-ups at the moment! (Until Friday.)

The first 12 wishlists are live, and there are so many great prompts for Guardian and a bunch of related fandoms! My writing has been minimal in the last three months, but I hope I can get things back into gear soon so I can tackle several of these.

  4. [community profile] ficinabox sign-ups are closed, and while assignments aren't out yet, I'm already plotting what I want to try and write.

(I'm sure there's something else I meant to post about, but if I wait until I remember, I may never post again. *g*)
