The oldest VCR edited femslash vids I've found so far are Katharine's (B5, 1997/1998) and Tarae's (Xena and Voyager, 1998/1999). It sounds like Matt Savelkoul started making VCR-edited Xena vids in December 1997, but I'm not sure if he vidded femslash (I haven't tracked down copies of his yet).

It seems like some Xena vidders were vidding digitally pretty early on (possibly 1999 or earlier, although I'm unsure if some of those were edited digitally or just digitized after - I think they'd all be working with VHS source so it's not always obvious if stuff was edited on two VCRs or a computer).

And now I'm curious about VCR edited Voyager femslash vids...

The TGIF/F folks were nice enough to send me copies of previous years' vidshow runlists and said it was okay to put on Fanlore, so I'm working on getting that info added to their page there.

(this year's virtual TGIF/F is the first I actually attended, so it's neat to see what was shown at previous vidshows)

Surgery happened! I really didn't think it was going to, but I got a call on Tuesday saying they wanted to change the time of the Friday surgery, and I was like, Cool, cool cool cool, but is it actually even going to happen? So they checked, et voila the authorization was there. So yeah, I didn't know for sure that I would be going under the knife until three days ahead of time. Everything went really well - I ended up being in and out of the hospital in three hours flat which felt really amazing to me, not that I have anything to judge it against. Pain levels weren't too bad - I did get vicodin as a just in case, and ended up taking two of those, but after that it was just ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Right now it's feeling super itchy, which means healing, right? So I'm still icing, because that numbs it enough that I don't go scratch scratch scratch all the time. Bandage is not needed, but I still slap a big one on every so often, cuz the stitches are unexpectedly pokey and it's just nice to have a little extra protection. But I'm supposed to get my stitches out on Wednesday, so that'll be that problem gone.

It'll still be another month after the stitches come out before they'll put in for the authorization to do the other hand, so there's still a ways to go til I'm all functional again (and obviously still healing to do on this side too), but it's really nice to not have as much pain. There's still pain, but it's different! And it will be going away!

Got re-hired to work at HRB again next tax season, with a teeny tiny raise as well. I finished my continuing education so I can renew my license? Permit? Whatever, for the next season. Now I just have to work on levelling up. Met our new district manager type person, and she seemed nice? Apparently she's planning on working out of our office, which I'm told will be good for those of us who work well, but means we'll be down an office space, and I don't like that, because I really wanted to get out of my box with its awful lighting and bad monitor.

Did end up getting interviewed for county job 1, but won't hear about that for another week or two, because I'm pretty sure I was the first person they interviewed so there were still a bunch to go through. But that's fine, because I have another interview for county job 2, which looks more interesting to me (and pays better). Kinda nice to have a couple of interviews on the calendar again, although the last time I had two interviews didn't work out well for me. No word yet on working NYCC or LACC this year, which is getting awfully close, so I'm guessing that's gonna be a no. Sigh.

It's been stupidly hot and I've been stupidly tired all the time, both of which I hope change soon.

Of note.

The interview was scheduled for 30 minutes and lasted 45. I've got no idea what's going to happen next, whether it's another interview or a quick rejection, but it's still proof to myself I've got something going for me.

It was a quick turnaround for the application, too, though as it's a small nonprofit with fewer than 30 people on staff and I sent my cover letter directly to a person, that makes some sense. As ever, it's less the quick response and more the actual response that spoils me for form-based applications.

Femslash and vidding stuff!

I had fun at Virtual TGIF/F! I think my premiere went over well. I didn't manage to see everything I wanted, but am planning on checking out some of the recorded panels later this week.

I also found some more VCR-edited femslash fanvids! I mentioned that I was curious about early femslash vidding and [personal profile] walkthegale pointed me toward the earliest ones she'd found when putting together the Femslash History vidshow for VidUKon 2018!

Apparently [personal profile] tarae posted some of the Voyager and Xena ones she made around 1998 and 1999 on her youtube page and mentions those were edited using two VCRs in the vid descriptions! (I kinda want to ask her about early femslash vidding, but I'm not sure if she's active on here or tumblr anymore)

Back to the saddle.

I finally sent out a novel query for the first time in months. Applause and cocktails are welcome. I haven't forgotten how easy and how unpleasant it is, in equal parts, at the same time. But it's my hope that things get easier with it. I realized how I could describe something in an X meets Y way - which is "The Murderbot Diaries meets Steven Spielberg's AI, as told by E. L. Konigsburg" - so it'll probably be the one I'll pitch the most, when I get the headspace for it.

Knowing the headspace I had today, and the time it took to find the agent, tailor the pitch, and recover afterwards should help some. As should writing this up to mark what I've done. If nothing comes of it than a stack of rejections, at least it'll be through honest effort instead of sitting it out.

Nothing is beneath consideration.

I went to the beach on impulse today. I didn't think I'd go, then I got out of the movies - Coyote vs Acme, well worth your time - and saw how sunny it was, and how good the air felt, and decided to head out to Coney Island after grabbing a couple things from the library. I got the trains, I got the transfers, I got some fun conversation with a pair of tourists from North Dakota who were pleased at my immediate association of their home being great sunsets and also at my suggestion of Governor's Island as a place to safely bike around and enjoy food trucks.

I thought I wouldn't go because I don't much care for the restaurant my parents usually pick. I still didn't care much for it. I thought I wouldn't go because even as much as I love the aquarium, my parents walk at a pace I find maddeningly slow - I swear I got shin splints one time from putting my foot down in a hard stop so much because I kept walking ahead. But I got something to eat. I enjoyed the aquarium well enough, even if my parents and brother couldn't either walk briskly, or walk briskly, stop and enjoy, and walk some more, instead of inching. The sharks were adorable.

The beach was my older brother J.'s daughter A.'s first time in the ocean. As far as I can tell, she loved it. I'm not surprised; my whole family does. I wasn't dressed for the beach, arriving on impulse, still wearing the rabbit-print dress I'd decided was fitting for the movie. So I didn't get into the water. What I did instead was collect sea glass. None of it was rounded pebbles, but instead, most of it was pieces with only gently sanded edges. Some were larger pieces of blunted edges. Most were little, a few were sizable enough to move from salvage to garbage. I used a pocket, I filled a hand, I found a plastic cup to hold what was in my hand and more, I found two ceramic shards, I found a small bag to hold it all. I need to wash it all and find a suitable jar and turn it into some kind of art.

Not sure about other regions, but in my neck of the woods CVS and the main chain grocery store have the 2026-2027 flu vaccine available and CVS expects to have the 2026-2027 covid vaccine in next Friday.

Wildlife spotted at the archery range today included the usual turkey vultures riding the air currents, some pileated woodpeckers, and a ruby-throated hummingbird checking out someone's compound bow (the bow in question is very red and very shiny) before flying off.

Cross-referencing.

Tonight, my younger brother's wife G. mentioned there were a couple movies she wanted to see, but she couldn't remember the names. She described one as having the actress from the show Hacks, and it had kind of a long name, but -

"Life and Death at Camp Miasma," I told her.

She was surprised, then moved on to say there was another horror movie that was probably out of theaters right now. She didn't remember anything except that in the trailer, it was in a basement. It was kind of a new one, but there -

"Backrooms," I told her.

"How do you know these things?" she asks, almost challenging, almost upset, very amazed, and I shrug, simply satisfied.

I've now checked, and while the actual title's "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma" I think I got close enough for government work.

Making a telehealth appointment happens on Qwell. You find your practice, you find your doctor, you find a time. You sign up and Qwell sends you an email about it.

The appointment itself happens on another website, Klara. There's no mention of this in the Qwell email. There's no mention of this on the practice's website. Klara sends reminder messages that you can only read on Klara, because even though I gave it my cell phone number, it's not sending anything there.

The practice's website mentions Klara in the context of saying it has a "message us" button powered by Klara. The button makes a pop-up window which doesn't work on Firefox.

I'll give them this: my medical information is so secure, I can't even get to it.

My US passport expired in 2024, and I haven't got around to renewing it yet (as mentioned in my last post) because I have a shiny new biometric Finnish passport, and didn't anticipate traveling out of the EU in the near future. (We had just started planning to meet in Montreal at WorldCon next year, but I could've used my EU passport.)

Now that my father has died suddenly the question comes up of traveling to the US. Of course, you can enter on a Finnish passport, but I was concerned about visas (Finns need one usually, US citizens do not, but if I had the wrong passport?) and also about it looking sketchy and causing discrimination of some kind at the border, given the current state of everything. I was planning to call the embassy to ask this, but I spent some time on their website first, and it gives the impression that they are very pressed for time and their definition of emergency is quite narrow. I COULD still have tried their phone queue - people doing that kind of service are usually very nice and helpful - but I was hoping to find an answer to my question on their website, which I did not. I did find that the Finnish foreign ministry is currently not recommending avoiding the US, so that seems to be a good sign. It probably means nobody with Finnish passports has been menaced, harmed, illegally interrogated, etc recently.

There is such a thing as an emergency passport if you have to travel within 2 weeks, but I might not actually need one. Would have to call them and ask about that first.

However, apparently the embassy can renew my expired passport in most likely 4-6 weeks, and I just heard from my sister that they've scheduled a service (Unitarian Universalist and non-supernatural) in a couple of months, maybe more like three, and my dad's extended family will probably be coming then. He will be cremated in a few weeks from now, so not sure why the service is that far out. My BIL's mother has offered to come from Texas to stay with them for a short while to help with cleaning and cooking. So I will talk to my mom later today, and if she or my sister prefers for me to come as soon as possible instead of later, I will attempt to do that (starting with calling the embassy to ask about travel documents). I do not care about the service itself, but I would gain something from mourning together with dad's extended family; but that's not as important a consideration as whether my presence would be helpful, or at least pleasant, for my mom and sister.

Otherwise, I should have plenty of time to have my US passport renewed through the embassy before the service. Our printer doesn't work at the moment, but I think I can print and photocopy at the library, which is a block and a half's walk.

I'm not looking forward to traveling to the US in general though. I always find it hard to sleep when traveling and my stomach seems to be upset most of the time I'm there every single time. There's universal availability of lactose-free dairy here, and I will have to either do research on the pills you can take for it or just eat mostly vegan there (but no fresh produce)!

Tips for international travel and eating on same gratefully accepted. Or knowledge about lactose pills, or whatever they are! Practical stuff. No condolences yet though please, I am not ready to wallow right now!
