Well fell asleep last night on the couch after trying to watch the latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and there was a power glitch. Everything came back on except for the internet and since I was on the couch with Xena and Gabby cuddled on top of me, I just played Dreamlight until I got super sleepy and fell asleep until early this morning. I was very comfortable between the two cats but bladder called and won.

Welp, if you told my younger self that I would ever icon Lana Lang, I'd probably would have laughed at you.... but well, I did it. But I did really love Superman & Lois' version of Lana a lot, maybe it was her writing or casting - I'm not quite sure. I really enjoyed making these icons, I'm proud at how well the textures came out with the cropping/images. And I just signed up/did the icons in the nick of time since the challenge ends September 1st.

Games

Dreamlight Valley apparently already had Lucky - but as a pet... which fine - that doesn't give me a lot of hope that they'd at least give us Perdita & Pongo like the Lady & Tramp plus the animals from the Lion King. I did finally get Maleficent though! Still haven't gotten to Aurora but maybe later this week or next. The game keeps glitching so I have to restart it a bunch.

Anyway I think that's it as of right now - I need to go find my phone and then get ready for bed since it's after 11 already. So maybe next time will be a Supergirl and Spider-Man: Brand New Day review.... which would be good because I do want to watch them again anyway.

Animated preview of Moon Series splash pages

Moon Series

Moon Series is seven Tabula Rasa splash pages for Dreamwidth, each with a moon on the page. Paste the CSS into Use embedded CSS, paste the matching entry into a future-dated sticky (HTML mode, Disable auto-formatting on). Style: Tabula Rasa, Plain, one column. Leave Custom stylesheet URL blank.

The moon is the through-line: a disc on the sheet, phases on the destinations, craters, a terminator, earthshine, an occultation, a night log. Hover a destination and the face waxes or wanes. The color stays.

Named for lunar things: Selene, Lunaria, Terminator, Mare, Syzygy, Libration, and Orrery. Same install for all of them. Done by request from pen_umbral. Open the CSS, copy it. Open the entry HTML, paste that into the sticky. Preview on the hub before you go live, and replace YOUR-JOURNAL in the nav links.

All 7 are below, each with a screenshot and links to the live preview, CSS, and entry HTML.

Please credit gelateria if you use one, and contact me if anything is broken.

It's been awhile since I did a meme, so figured it was about time. Both memes were snagged from[personal profile] impala_evolved.

This or That: Tropes addition. Feel free to copy/paste if you want to play!

slow burn or love at first sight // fake dating or secret dating // enemies to lovers or best friends to lovers // there’s only one bed or long-distance correspondence // hurt/comfort or amnesia // fantasy au or modern au* // mutual pining or domestic bliss // smut or fluff // canon-compliant or fix-it // reincarnation or character death// one-shot or multi-chapter // kid fic or road trip fic // arranged marriage or accidental marriage // high-school romance or middle-age romance // time travel or isolated together // neighbors or roommates // sci-fi au or magic au // body swap or gender bent // angst or crack // apocalyptic or mundane

*So I do like Modern AUs, it just kinda has to be certain fandoms? I know I really loved The 100's modern Bellamy/Clarke AUs. I've read a couple Bridgerton and Game of Thrones ones but lost interest usually. I guess it would depend on the fandom.
** I also still love: love at first sight, secret dating, best friends to lovers, amnesia (Overboard anyone? Also 10 Things That Never Happened which had fake!amnesia), and canon compliant (although most of my favorite ships are non-canon so yeah that doesn't usually work). I just love the other one more.

Dw history meme
When did you join Dreamwidth?
June 14, 2009. I can't believe it's been seventeen years? That makes me feel old.

Why did you join Dreamwidth? Originally, it was sometime after dreamwidth came about and I think that was because of one the larger purges that LJ did back which honestly was one of the first or second big blows to LJ fandom spaces that I experienced - and I think it was the safer option and also most similar formatting that I loved about LJ compared to the other places people went to although I did end up joining tumblr.

What's the meaning behind your Dreamwidth username? same name as my LJ - wanted to it be seamless transition if anyone happened to want to find me from LJ. But anyway it has two meanings, the original name - flare on fury just squished together.... and the second one after I realized what it spelled Flareon Fury aka that fiery Eevee evolution from Pokémon. Which works! I love Flareon too. So basically a two-for-one deal.

What's your favorite thing about Dreamwidth? I have to say that it uses the system that LJ used (the journals/communities) and has improved on it. I much prefer this version of interaction than tumblr where I just feel like I'm lost in the abyss (I mean don't get me wrong pretty gifs/fanart, but it's just chaos to me) and things like Discord where I literally cringe at. There are a lot of events and communities.

What's your least favorite thing about Dreamwidth? Sometimes I feel alone in posting in communities and that I'm spamming people because of it since I'll look for new posts and I'm like the only person posting new. I've run a few Drabble-A-Thons and other events, and no one participated in which sucks.

Dreamwidth free, paid or premium? Paid so that I can have 150 icon slots! (and to support the site)

What do you get out of Dreamwidth that you don't get from anywhere else? I have to agree with what impala_evolved said "DW still moves slow enough for me to post comments a day (or more) later, and I can catch up on my reading page, and it's still searchable. And I can customize my own blog!!" I love LOVE being able to design my websites so I hate not being able to control how my journal/communities look although we did lose several really great layout communities that had been on LJ. I also love the tagging system.

Dreamwidth tip for beginners? I would say join communities for your various fandoms and keep the fandoms alive by interacting with those fandoms! Participate in fic events that interest you. Ship and Let Ship - do not shame people for shipping what they do. Also Your Kinks are Not My Kinks or however that saying goes - again do not shame people for their kinks. COMMENTING - so important! If you're not a writer or graphic maker - let them know you like it or comment in discussion posts - best way to keep the writers/graphic makers/fans keep the fandoms alive. Also if you have nothing on your blog currently, write a little about you section (can be broad and just be about the fandoms you like - doesn't have to be as in depth as mine) and snag some icons from [community profile] fandom_icons or the many other icon communities out there.

ARCHITECTURE LAYOUTS: BRUTALISM

Animated preview of Architecture Themes (Brutalism)

Brutalism

Brutalism is the first Architecture Themes subset: five Tabula Rasa layouts for Dreamwidth, built around one as-found 2:3 portrait rather than print-shop or bakery paper. Style: Tabula Rasa unstyled, one column. Copy CSS from the stylesheet links below into Custom CSS.

The design cues come from construction rather than print: a shared 2:3 portrait, five different relationships to it. Broadsheet, framed plate, narrow column, cover then page, edge band. The through-line is structure over decoration, type that holds up in long entries, and spacing that keeps comments and metadata from crowding the text.

These five began as six layout variants made for rp_help. They kindly agreed to let five of them be published here. (Go check them out for RP help!)

All 5 Brutalism plates are below. Each has a screenshot and links to the stylesheet and preview hub.

Open a stylesheet, copy the CSS into Custom CSS, and preview twelve Dreamwidth views on the hub. Replace PASTE-YOUR-PHOTO-URL with a 2:3 portrait from Manage File Storage, then pin two entries. Please credit gelateria if you use one, and as always contact me if anything is broken or doesn't work.

Dang has it really been five years since I did a fic exchange. Time flies.

Hello! I'm Jaina, (effervescible on AO3) and social media-wise I'm a little more active at [tumblr.com profile] effervescible and technically [x.com profile] effervescibled if you care to look, though I'm not on the bird site much these days.

As always, I want to note that while I hope my likes & prompts are helpful in sparking ideas, optional details are optional, and I’d rather you go with a premise that you feel really good about and are jazzed to create rather than something that checks a lot of boxes but you don’t feel strongly about.

Some of the likes below probably don't pertain to this particular exchange unless you're getting ambitious with the plot but I am too lazy to prune.more letter below )

The Friday Five, Dray-style!

Aug. 29th, 2026 04:15 pm
dray: (Default)
[personal profile] dray
This week's [community profile] thefridayfive questions, just for funsies:

1. What chores did you have to do, growing up?
- It varied, but was not strictly regimented. Generally, so long as I left spaces roughly as clean as I found them and didn't leave anything on the floor, it was considered acceptable.

2. Which chore do you hate doing the most?
- Emptying the cat's litter box was an overwhelming sense-sensation, and pulling stuff out of the kitchen sink drain similarly gave me such a case of the 'yucks' as a kid that I usually tried to escape doing them. I had a distinct moment in my early teens when I was able to confront the kitchen sink gunk with a certain level of equanimity and felt like a 'real adult' for a moment.

3. Which chore do you actually enjoy doing?
- During winter, I'd shovel our section of the walkway, and I loved it so much that I'd shovel out the neighbours' too, energy permitting. One year when a neighbour got a snow blower, he was peeved that his sidewalk had already been cleared before he could play with his new toy! Woops!

4. Did you receive an allowance when you were growing up?
- Not in any regimented way. I'd occasionally get some money, but usually very little (we're talking loonies and those old paper two-dollar bills with the robins on them!) Once, my grandfather told me that if I could tell what bird was on our then $50 bills, I could have the bill. I turned around and told him "snowy owl" on the spot and he looked at the back of the bill, looked at me, and gave it over so regretfully. Sir: I loved birds, I loved money, and I didn't realize you didn't think I'd know the answer! You should have been more prepared!

5. What was (or is) your favorite subject in school?
- I didn't really enjoy much of anything in school, looking back on it with fresher eyes. I tolerated a lot, but while I got good grades, I did not excel-- It was more like I shotgunned all the classes to 'get through them' faster. (I was a pretty miserable kiddo, but that's another can of worms.)
- The first class I remember really enjoying was the stoichiometry unit in Chemistry 20 or 30. The equivalence and balance in chemical reactions, really learning and understanding how something could change from one compound into another and still retain its mass (or if it didn't, where did the remainder go, or how did the new stuff accrete?), that stuff fascinated me in a way that no other science could. Even though I loved biology, zoology, and prehistoric creatures, those were never taught in a way that caught my mind like stoichiometry was taught. Later, in my first year of university (before I pivoted into the arts) I ate up organic chemistry in the same way. I loved learning about chirality and organic compounds, and that was probably the first place that I started being very curious about where real life and theory danced together to produce new and cool molecules. (I was terrible at the maths, calculus, etc. that would be needed to really excel in organic chem, and I also hated the thought of going into oil or pharma, so in terms of IRL capitalistic pursuits it was a dead end... but it sure did stoke my imagination!)

A link about bombs

Aug. 28th, 2026 10:09 am
roadrunnertwice: Rodney the Second Grade T-Ball Jockey displays helpful infographics. (T-ball / Your Ass (Buttercup Festival))
[personal profile] roadrunnertwice

By the way, here’s an excellent essay about game design that I don’t think I’ve contrived an excuse to link yet: “Bomb Sense,” by danbo. (Danbo being the auteur behind Blue Revolver and, uh, apparently Scrandle.)

I think about this essay very frequently, not least because of how much I struggled to, like, independently derive the necessity and nature of bomb sense prior to reading it. (I went from “bombs are bad because they’re a mechanic the game doesn’t want you to use” to “bombs are legitimate but I’m fukken bad at em and can’t see how to get good” to “oh, I thought reaction-bombing was the be-all-end-all, but actually 80% of the time bombs are about either perceiving the future or detecting when you’re off-route”.)

He’s basically saying that bombs are a kickass mechanic because it feels awesome to use them well and they open up a lot of space for player agency and complex decision-making, but they’re a tough mechanic to build around because they rely on a ton of broad and focused knowledge and skill acquisition before a player can use them fluently. It’s this nasty design tension, where you’ve got this powerful experience that can’t be had any other way, but the way to lead a player into that experience is basically an unsolved problem.

1cc: Mushihimesama

roadrunnertwice: Scott fends off Matthew Patel's attack. (Reversal! (Scott Pilgrim))
[personal profile] roadrunnertwice

Hey by the way!! I don't think I mentioned it here yet, but a month or two back, I finally notched that Mushihimesama (maniac mode) 1cc that I was working on! A pointless but incredibly satisfying achievement. 📺 I got a video of it up on YouTube if you're interested (you are not required to be interested).

Dealing with the gauntlet of stage 5 kind of unlocked a couple things in my brain, especially around routing bullet cancels. (Certain large enemies will erase all enemy bullets on death, and you often want to carefully time this to guarantee a safe recovery from a bunch of other enemies making the screen unlivable. This means you have to treat the scariest baddies as a precious resource, which is fascinating.)

Anyway, that's my first proper clear of a Cave title. I'm back to working on Ketsui, which I like better than Mushi but which I had put aside for a bit once I realized I was close to a Mushi clear if I focused.

Ketsui doesn't really have alternate modes or difficulties (unless you count the oddball arranged modes included in the M2 port), and it also doesn't have "rank" (dynamic difficulty, where the aggression scales depending on player actions) — it just presents the same impossible-looking wall to every player. But at the time I originally picked it up, I found that weirdly comforting — there was no question of whether I was "doing it right" or choosing the appropriate mode, you know? Pick your ship, approach your target, and attack.

It's been a busy week on Dreamwidth, but mostly because I added quite a few folks from [community profile] addme a few weeks ago and suddenly have lots of interesting things to talk about!

In any case, here's my plug for DW Communities via interactions.

  • [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles - I wrote and submitted my person's request! Just waiting for the reveal now.

  • [community profile] weekendwritingmarathon - Chatting with the admin and folks in the discord for this community to help get the oomph to write! They got me through both my drabble quest and helping to set up an X-Files Casefic I'm writing for some friends.

  • [community profile] itsabattlefield - Commented on the latest theme, 'combinations' as a nice way to get ideas for making icons! Unfortunately I haven't been drawing enough to make good use of these yet.

  • [community profile] naarmamo - I updated the 4th week (nearly wrapped, wooh!) and shared some sketches I'd done. Unfortunately, Dreamwidth continues to be a little dodgy about image sharing: imgur.com won't show up for folks in the UK!

  • [community profile] addme - Chatted with a few new folks! Lots of cool people using this site!

  • [personal profile] enablemeplz - Daydreaming about my old RP days and wishing I both had the oomph to commit to RP, and the lack of complexity and baggage to just jump into something new. (I suppose that would be my 'impulsiveness' from the ADHD, because I have not yet resolved the baggage in any meaningful way and I know I'd wind up ghosting or hurting someone's feelings once the urge to respond died down again, so I'm only window shopping and renewing my need to resolve some of my bad behaviours)

  • [community profile] iconcolors - I managed to get one icon in for the previous palette, one after the deadline, and have a sketch mostly done being inked that I would use to complete the set!
    ImageImage
(These are for Cyrrin, an NB dragon who's spent so much time in human form that they're really conflicted about what feels 'real' and what is a 'front'. They're for [personal profile] jkatkina, who writes this character in a delectably complex manner.)

  • [community profile] nexticon - I posted an icon following inspiration from the previous!
    Image
A dreamlike image for Ryan in 'Hellgary', which really is still just the working title for a comic that I'd started in 2010 about two friends going through eldritch end-of-the-world shit together.

  • [community profile] everykindofcraft - commented on the latest necklaces being shared, which continue to slap!

  • [community profile] thankfulthursday - Joined and posted here, as I like a good gratitude community!
