Today is partly sunny and sweltering. A beautiful day to stay indoors and write! It's Poetry Fishbowl anyway, so drop by and leave me prompts on the theme of "Help That's Actually Helpful."

I fed the birds. I've seen a lot of sparrows and house finches; they're hitting the feeders hard.

I put out water for the birds. Honeybees are draining the shallower watering spots.

1) Finished "Save Our Squad with David Beckham" yesterday. We've been watching a number of sports documentaries, partly because they interest my partner and we also haven't been able to watch Daily Show over meals. But this one turned out to be somewhat different, and it was a really good view. ( Read more... )

2) Entry in the small irritations file: mosquitoes have been a real problem this past month. I got a Zevo kit, which I keep moving around the apartment in hopes of capturing them. Some gnats, but no mosquito, and I currently have four large lumps where I have been bitten. I keep sitting in front of a fan hoping it will deter them.

But yesterday during house cleaning, one of our 2 high standing fans was knocked over and broken. Naturally it couldn't have been the other, heavier one, which we have been coddling for the past year to keep it working. ( Read more... )

3) Yesterday I spoke to my niece (the only one of the three I ever get to see), who had wanted to come with me in October. Unfortunately she's hurt her back and is finding moving around and walking difficult. Although it's still a month away, there's no guarantee she will be much better by then, and we'd expected to be walking every day. She's also rejected the idea from her doctor that she does physical therapy.

Summary: Following his killing of an opponent in the boxing ring, Jud Duplenticy begins suffering from nightmares. Years later, after the events at Our Lady of Fortitude, the nightmares return.

Reccer's notes: This is a short and sweet fic focusing on Jud's trauma following his ordeal at the hands of Rev. Wicks and the murder investigation, and his relationship with Bp. Langstrom. I loved Langstrom in the movie and wished he had more scenes, since I thought his and Jud's interactions hinted at a really interesting history - Jud says Langstrom's stuck his neck out to help him before, and Langstrom would certainly be aware of Jud's past and likely played a role in helping him move past it. This fic scratches that itch, and paints a lovely portrait of the men's friendship and the way Langstrom has been a trusted mentor to Jud, and the way their relationship would be affected by the events of the movie.

I'm sleepy again. >.< I keep staying up late, but I guess Lorie did sing, "coucher tard, lever tôt, toujours pas sommeil, dans mes écouteurs une love, une love song", so I can pretend I'm a glamorous French socialite who goes to clubs all the time. Meanwhile, I was just working on an essay for my junior seminar and reading a little bit because otherwise I never get time to read.

Wish me luck! I'm donating blood later today. I've had bloodwork but never donated any, so I'm a bit nervous.

Laptop-TV combo with DVDs on top and smartphone on the desk

There have been articles about how people are circumventing payments for streaming or even cable/satellite content, citing a litany of issues with both costs and service. Meanwhile, popular devices being used have been shown to be a serious malware risk which could lead to ISPs cutting users' internet service.

What are the biggest drawbacks of cable vs streaming vs TV license fees for you? At what point could something become too much trouble to watch?

The End of Oak Street was a lot of fun! A neighbourhood is sent back to the time of the dinosaurs.

I stopped watching Jurassic Park after the first Jurassic World because the humans were too dumb. Here, apart from a couple of characters, they're mostly not.

The dinos have feathers! Okay, they sometimes look more like hair than feathers, but points for the attempt. And the creatures are pretty varied, including peaceful giant tortoises.

I also like that the contemporary section of the story takes place in 1982. I hadn't paid attention to it in the trailer.

Guardian Wishlist 2026 started and there are already a few interesting prompts posted. But my poor elbow still isn’t in the best shape (it’s a bit better, but not really up for writing for long), so I don’t know if I will be able to write anything. Maybe something like a triple drabble would be possible, we’ll see.

The Edge of Horizon

The finale was lovely. Nothing surprising for me, that was more or less exactly what I expected. There was one thing, which made me go all “seriously???”. But all in all it gave me what I wanted, so I’m satisfied.

Major spoilers here.

I knew Phob wasn’t really dead. He “died” in the middle of the episode. With 40 minutes still left it was obvious that he would be back somehow. But the way they did it – that was my one complaint for this episode, because it didn’t make any sense.

So they (whoever that was, other soldiers perhaps) found rings near a mutilated body, thought it was Phob, and brought the body and the rings to his mother? And Phob was, unknowingly to everybody, despite still being in his uniform, taken by some villagers and recovered from his very serious gunshot wound somewhere in the village, and not at the hospital? And he never was able to send a message at least to his mother, or to his superiors in the army, that he was alive? Until he appeared dressed in an elegant white suit in front of Tin, conveniently in the palace where they spent their happy childhood together? Because it really would be too cruel for Siri and Janthorn to know that Phob was alive, and instead of instantly informing grieving Tin, to just let him go to the palace for that meeting.

But I guess the creators really wanted to have that wedding-like image (since Phob and Tin can’t have a real wedding during those times) with both of them dressed in white, standing under the tree with pink petals falling all around them.

But I’m not really complaining, because, yay, a happy ending. I mean as much as it can be a happy ending for them in those times. They can never be openly together, but people in their life love them and accept them. And they got Tin’s father’s blessing. And even Chat finally knows they are together, and he thinks they are cute. “Disgustingly cute” as he had said it. Heh...

And Siri and Janthorn held hands that one time, so I’ll take it as a sign that they are together, too. 😊

Last, but not least – I have two new interesting trailers.

The Intern - Korean remake of an American movie with Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, about a 70-year-old widower who is bored with his retired life, and he applies to a be a senior intern at a fashion company. Han So Hee and Choi Min Sik play main roles in the Korean version.

The Remarried Empress - a new kdrama based on the popular webtoon about the Empress of the Eastern Empire, whose husband the Emperor wants to divorce her to marry another woman. And she says that she will accept a divorce, but only on the condition that they let her remarry a prince from the Western Kingdom. And it’s also fantasy, I guess, since apparently in the webtoon The Empress’s new husband can transform into a bird. I wonder if they will keep that in the drama. 😊
