I have been waiting to read this book for a few years, since it was still a 3rd or 4th draft. I follow the author, Christy Anne Jones on YouTube. In fact, I've been a top tier member of her Patreon for the past few years. I love her videos, especially her videos on writing craft. Also, her videos are atmospheric and comforting to watch. In any case, one throughline of her videos has been talking about "Project Teacup," the novel she was writing. She wrote and edited so many drafts of this story, fine tuning things as she learned more about writing. Finally, she was ready to query agents, and that was a whole emotional journey. A couple of months went by without really any response, and then the floodgates opened, and she had many offers of representation. Again, I watched as she documented editing the book more with her agent, and then they were ready to go on submission. Again, it looked like the book might fail, and then suddenly she found herself in a highly contested auction.

The only downside is that they were never able to get a publishing deal in the US, only in the UK and Australia. They were offered a US deal, but the publisher wanted to keep too much, so they turned it down. The book was finally released at the end of July, and eventually ended up on some bestseller lists of some book sellers. If you're in North America and want to check it out, you have to order it from Blackwell's.

The book follows a chronically ill young woman, Dot, who feels out of place in her family. She dreams of learning magic, but magic is outlawed. She hears about a witch in a faraway city who owns a tea shop, and one day she's had enough, so she buys a train ticket to the city to try to find the witch, Theodora. It's funny, some people are tagging this as cozy fantasy, but it really isn't. There's blood magic, character death, grief, lots of turmoil, etc. The imagery in the book is beautiful, and I really enjoyed the magic system.

I know since it hasn't been published in North America that the chances of any of you actually checking out this book are slim, but if you're curious, it's worth taking a shot on it.

So, what is Write Every Day (or as we affectionately type it to save typing, WED?

Write Every Day is an informal writing challenge that moves from journal to journal, hosted by different people instead of on a central comm. It's probably a weird way of doing things, but that's how it's set up and — it's worked so far!

Every day I'll make a post where people can check in to comment on what they've written that day, whether a single sentence or thousands of words; or to talk about problems, ask questions, and generally cheer each other on.

There are no sign-ups. Anyone is welcome to join at any time. Just comment and voila! You have joined.

What counts as "writing" is fairly relaxed, and can include working on research, plotting, RPG text, free-writing, and the ever-useful "alibi sentence," which is what it sounds like, a single sentence written primarily to count as writing for that day.

The goal is to write every day, but it's not required. A tally is kept of everyone's daily writing check-in, but it's to help people stay on track. It isn't a race.

The challenge is meant to help each other develop a consistent writing habit, keep procrastination at bay, get through difficult times, overcome writer's block, and to just keep at it.

I've had an ache in my jaw for the last three weeks and I thought at first it was just a result of stress and then maybe an inflammation, but no, another root canal. Uuugh.

I have the least amount of money in my checking account since many many years but that's a good thing, I finally got around to investing most of it. When it comes to money it's very much "do as I say, not as I do" for me, because how many times have I told clients to do exactly that before... (I also haven't done my personal tax return in many years. It's fine, mine is not mandatory, but I would get some money back if I wasn't lazy. This year for sure, probably.)

My parents were here this weekend and helped put up the last shelves, I have a well organized storage room now and a lot more space, very convenient. Have I mentioned that I love my new apartment? With their help I also finally hung up the quilt I made with my family, and some prints I got at a convention (I even got a frame for them!, which I rarely bother with so it feels extra fancy.) My fandom display corner in the living room, full of figures and prints and pins etc., is looking great already; I'm still waiting for a couple more things I ordered but then I'll definitely post a picture.
Next step, organizing some things, especially documents, that got put into drawers in a big pile. I'll get around to it eventually. And putting up some more art - maybe a photo wall, like LB has? Still thinking about it.

I'm a bit behind on sleep, quite a bit of it self-inflicted because I was watching or reading things until late into the night, but I still dislike the consequences of my own actions. Boo.

I signed up for

ficinabox. I'm hoping to create things with some different mediums again, looking forward to it. Now I just need to finish my letter and the swap requests. ...but I should probably go to bed now.

1) The first US bank robbery took place on this day in 1798. The Bank of Pennsylvania at Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was robbed of $162,821. Have you ever had anything stolen?

No, I've been very lucky in that I've never had anything stolen. It's funny but bank ~~robberies~~ thefts don't really seem to be plots of movies much anymore. Which is a shame as two of my favourite movies are both about it - Bandits with Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton and Cate Blanchett and Entrapment with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Because we had such a long run of abnormally hot and dry days part of me is looking forward to autumn with it's cooler days, crisp mornings and a sense of slowing down. When it's sunny, I always feel like I should make the most of it, even if sometimes it's to my detriment. However I've also developed a nice little routine of sitting outside and eating my breakfast and the rain makes that tricky.

Yesterday I broke my cardinal rule about not travelling on a bank holiday Monday and drove to Stratford (upon-Avon) to see my best friend. For reasons best known to itself my sat nav took me down all the back roads and I arrived a little frazzled. Still, we had a nice meal and an even nicer chat. She's trying to convince me to go to Download next year, and I'm very tempted. I would have gone this year, but at the time I would have had to buy tickets I'd messed up my back and was in quite a bit of pain.

Why I like it: Jiang Fengmian is the last person to realize that Jiang Cheng changed. He has no clue what is happening, and seeing the changes through his eyes is a lot of fun, with all the things he has no chance to understand but the reader of course does. I really enjoyed the fix-it, too.
