Where did August go?! At the start of the month I was actually catching up on some stuff, and then time fell into a black hole again, and here we are.

My mouse gave up the ghost, so I had to get a new one. (This one only lasted for four years, and I wouldn't bet on the new one lasting even that long ...)

guardian_wishlist is in sign-ups at the moment! (Until Friday.)

The first 12 wishlists are live, and there are so many great prompts for Guardian and a bunch of related fandoms! My writing has been minimal in the last three months, but I hope I can get things back into gear soon so I can tackle several of these.

ficinabox sign-ups are closed, and while assignments aren't out yet, I'm already plotting what I want to try and write.

(I'm sure there's something else I meant to post about, but if I wait until I remember, I may never post again. *g*)

The pieces of cloth I cut did not fit over the dome I built; it was too asymmetrical. But my daughter came over and cut shapes out of the remnant cloth and pinned them in place, and took it home and topstitched it on her machine, and it all came together:

Today's cooking was okay - the chocolate chip banana bread scones didn't taste banana-y enough to me, but I ate one while it was still warm, so maybe being totally cool will enhance the banana taste? Also, I made them too big and only got 9 instead of 12 as the recipe suggests. *hands* I have extra mashed bananas in the freezer now, so there could be a next time to get it right.

Also, you probably know this, but just in case you don't, if you want banana bread or something else really banana-y but only have less ripe bananas on hand, you can roast them, and it will intensify the flavor and work like the soft overripe ones you'd normally use.

And today's stir fry was easy but kind of bland? Maybe it's on me because I didn't bother to add the suggested pinch of salt at the end, because soy sauce is usually salty enough for me? But I thought the garlic and ginger combo would have more flavor punch and it all kind of amalgamated into something that was okay instead of great. But I still have pork and cabbage left uncooked to try again another night this week! So again, there's the opportunity for tinkering and improvement.

1. We did not end up going to Dino Fest at the museum this morning because it's just so hot and we wanted to rest, but while we had reserved tickets, they were free with our annual membership, so we didn't waste any money on it. And because I thought yesterday that we'd be out today, I did my usual Sunday vacuuming on Saturday, so now I didn't have to do it today! That was really nice!

2. I took a nice long bike ride this morning (about 18 miles) and managed to get home before it got really hot and sunny.

3. I got a bottle that I use for Disney trips and such that fits on the bottle holder on my bag, and I really like it, but I could not find any bottles that size with that sort of cap/neck that were insulated (it needs to be like a PET bottle to fit) so if I put cold/icy water in it sweats so much and I hate that. I don't mind that the water doesn't stay cold, but the sweating is annoying. But then I remembered that like bottle cozies are a thing, so today I ordered one and it should come before the next time I want to use the bottle, so hopefully that solves the issue.

4. Jasper was so intent on a squirrel outside. His body was super tense and that raised front paw was jiggling with excitement lol.

For reasons not worth ever really delving into, ever, I tend to forget about the existence of over-the-counter medicine to treat symptoms. Leading to the many occassions of me saying "I don't have to put up with this! I'm rich!" and then taking pepto-bismal.

Today I remembered about the existence of cough drops.

I am here to report that Ludens wild cherry cough drops taste exactly the same as they did the last time I took them, whoever knows how long ago it was. I do know why I stopped buyihng them: because I ate too many and got stomach ache from it. But oh wow, these didn't change at all. The packaging sure looks different, though. I suppose that's to be expected.

Developing a test called the Maurice Lamm Test: does your first person POV fiction book have as strong, and as specific, a POV as The Jewish Way In Death And Mourning, a fairly standard widely accepted (and non-fiction) guide meant for a lay audience, published in 1969?

Project Hail Mary, by the way, fails this test. R' Maurice Lamm has a stronger voice on one page than Ryland Grace does in the entire book.

(As I was saying to someone, "R' Lamm has opinions and he is going to tell you exactly what they are". But honestly, this would not be a high bar for first person POV books to jump over.)

1. I finished up a puzzle today. This one was fun to do and the art is so pretty!

2. Since we went to Disneyland yesterday rather than today, that meant I had a chance to get to the farmers market this morning. I got some delicious desserts and some tamales and some strawberries. Oh, and the granola bar guy was there. He's only there every other week lately so I wasn't sure if this was his week or not, but it was, so I got some granola bars, too.

3. The neighborhood market that does weekend bbq during the summer only has one week left (they do it from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend) so I went up there for a bbq tri-tip sandwich for lunch. We'll probably do that next Sunday or Monday, too, just to get one last sandwich in for the season.

My stomach has been doing a very unpleasant thing and I need it to stop by Monday since I have to go play pickleball(!!) in Red Hook(!!!) for work.

Despite that, today, I baked a small loaf of ciabatta and made another attempt at the tomato tian, this time only cooking it for 50 minutes instead of 90 (pics). Still topped it with burrata though, and it was delicious.

My plan tomorrow is to make scones for breakfast (and the week ahead) and then some kind of pork and cabbage stir fry for dinner. We'll see how it goes.

We went to Disneyland today after work. Today is the peak of the current hot spell and it was 100 degrees in Anaheim, even when we got there around 4pm, so it was not an ideal time to go, but the humidity was a lot lower than it has been lately (42% compared to over 80% most days) and because of the heat, the park was not crowded, so we were able to get shady spots to eat without any trouble.
