Folks, this is a part of a fundraiser for my friend Anna and her lovely family.
In Anna's own words:
"I'm very, very sick. Completely out of the blue, about 6 weeks ago, I discovered that I have stage 4 cancer. It seems to be a very aggressive form of breast cancer (Triple Negative), which has metastasized to my bones, all over my spine, pelvis, and possibly other organs. I have clots in my lungs, some probable damage to my liver, and overall things don't look good.
I've been in and out of the ER like 5 times and spent a week and a half inpatient at MGH, where they started me on pain management and chemotherapy, of which I've now had 3 doses, and I'm tolerating it fine, I guess. Who knows if it's helping. Other treatments are vaguely being discussed, but I am not eligible for immunotherapy and radiation cannot be combined with chemo at the same time. I buzzed my hair because it's all falling out anyway.
There's really no way to know what happens next. Right now, I can't work, though my workplace has been so far incredibly supportive. I could die within a year or I could live with a chronic illness for a while. My family is obviously struggling, though a lot of friends and relatives have stepped up in huge ways to help, for which we are infinitely grateful.
If I'm completely honest, I don't want to talk or answer any questions, and I'm not sure anyone could say anything that would help. I wish there was some way for people to just know what to do or say or where to be without it being such a huge strain on everyone. But the reality is that this sucks. It's one of those things in life that unequivocally sucks, and it's lonely and terrifying and full of guilt and shame and sadness.
I can hope only that at some point some treatment will work and I can be somehow more of myself again, rather than this tired shell of pain and anxiety. I hope that however long that takes doesn't manage to completely ruin what Joe and I have managed to build in our family. I don't know what to do for my kids, to whom it is the most unfair of all. I so wish there were some way out other than one horrifying minute at a time."
So here's the deal. All funds will go to Anna's fundraiser.
IF you pay more than 100, I'll dedicate a song for you.
IF you pay more than 300, I'll write a song for you based on your choice of subject matter.
IF you pay more than 500, I'll welcome you to a tour of my studio in Portugal.
