MNPHA partnered with the Institute of Urban Studies at the University of Winnipeg to map community housing (that is, public, non-profit, and cooperative housing) in Manitoba. The map was developed to help increase understanding of community housing for the public, and to be a resource to MNPHA, our members, and our partners, in locating and connecting with community housing in our neighbourhoods and regions.

The map was developed using existing data collected by MNPHA, as well a list of housing with existing funding agreements from Manitoba Housing. It may not include buildings that were built without a provincial funding agreement, where a provincial funding agreement expired, if it is a single family or scattered site (fewer than 4 unit) building, or if there is a reason due to the population it serves that the location should not be shared (for example, a shelter for people leaving domestic violence).

If you would like to update any information on the map, or have suggestions for how it can be improved, you can contact us at [email protected]

How to use the Map

  • You can zoom in and out of the map by scrolling on a mouse. As you zoom out, individual properties cluster together with the total number of units in the cluster listed, and the symbol becomes representative of the most common type of unit in the cluster
  • As you zoom in, you can see each individual property with the number of units. Clicking on the property provides information including the type of property, the contact information if available, information about the units, and an indication of whether there are rent-geared-to-income (RGI) units in the building or not. Note that all Manitoba Housing direct managed buildings have RGI units, as do the buildings with Sponsor Management agreements. The Private Non-Profit Buildings may or may not have RGI units depending on their funding agreement and their mandate as an organization to provide social housing.
  • The Bookmarks feature allows you to quickly zoom to a particular community. You can also use the address feature to type in a specific address.

Definitions:

  • Sponsor Managed (green diamond): the building is owned by Manitoba Housing, and managed by a non-profit organization
  • Direct Managed (red circle): the building is owned and managed by Manitoba Housing
  • Non-Profit (blue square): the building is owned by a non-profit organization. It may be managed by an employee of the non-profit organization, or the organization may have hired a property management company. This includes cooperative housing.
