Well, probably should do a self-promo post since it's been... half a year or so.
Hi, I'm D. Moonfire (https://d.moonfire.us/), I mostly write steampunk and fantasy. 97% of those words are free to read on my website, https://fedran.com/ with the index of stories at https://fedran.com/sources/. No Patreon, no subscriber, no fees (well, I have a Patreon, Librepay, and Ko-Fi, but you get nothing special for them, what you read is what you get). Really, the only payment I crave is to someone say they like it, ask questions about stories, or just let me know I touched their lives.
For a while I was belting out a chapter or story a week and did so for three hundred consecutive weeks (I'm proud of following cadences). I did burn out for a little but I'm getting back into it, but that is why "about" 907,205 words can be found on the site for your enjoyment. All of the stories can be read online, download in EPUB and PDF format. I even have an OPDS feed if you want to add my library to your ebook reader.
Most of my stories are "lightly edited" (I don't ask for money, I can't pay editors), but I do have a couple professionally polished ones on the main website.
For a fantasy world, I didn't want it to be all action or drama, so there are slices of life, forensic mages, people struggling with the trials of just being human with topics ranging from saving one's family from death to dealing with jealousy in an open marriage. There are also spicy stories, which are hopefully all properly tagged.
My stories are also overlapping. The story about a talented swinger being rescued by a middle-aged lesbian who can sharpen knives with a touch bumps against the story about a young violin player trying to avenge a murder which intersects with a story about a young man trying to take a trip across the country in his new fangled car.
If you have a topic you want, I'll be glad to tell you what I have or what might touch those topics. Some of them will get me to write it, but I just like to burble about the joy of world-building.
I also want to finish this writing obligation since I'm having this urge to make another shot at book covers to give Allegro and Flight of the Scions another shot.
Yesterday, I was trying to show Child.0 something about knife safety and accidently sliced up my finger doing the very thing I was trying to show him not to do.
Didn't get to the writing I had hoped for, but I did get a butt-load of chores, three hours of driving and interacting with people (though in a foul mood instead of my usual charming self), watched a few episodes of One Punch Man and Reacher, and smoked some ribs. Overall, a good day.
And now I hope to have really good dreams like I used to.
Food, cooking
Well, the first attempt at smoking meat (ribs) was fairly successful. Had to fight off Child.* from the results. I think it was just a tad too cooked for me, maybe 135 F instead of 145 F.
Part of me wants to learn Go so I can see about getting emoji responses into GoToSocial.
I don't want to learn Go though.
I really wish things would stop going wrong. This entire month sucks.
Improving my ebook vendor processing to handle the smashwords to draft2digital migration, adding itch, and removing Google and Nook (because their sites suck and I don't make sales on them).
Partner is having a friend's night out at the Riverside Casino so I'm single parenting. So, only one thing to do.
That's right, hand sand twenty boards because I don't have a belt sander yet.
Apparently the Home Depot installation line is supposed to have a life alert buy-me in their IVR.
They just change Child.1's school bus schedule. They now have to wake up a half hour earlier which means 06:30 wake up which means 05:50 alarm for Partner.
I just finished the sixth service visits out of what appears to be eight for four appliances.
- Dishwasher needed two (well, plus two more that lead to us getting the dishwasher)
- Clothes dryer needs three, still have two left over
- Clothes washer needed two and those are done
- Stove was the only one that got it in on the first as far as I know
Lead developer whining
I had to put out one of those "please look at PRs beyond just the correctness of code" emails. I've sent out three emails this week for PRs that were reviewed and accepted while I was on vacation.
I hate those.
Yeah, making code is correct and maintainable is right, but it needs to also needs to make sense in the scope of what the item is trying to fix.
(In this case, someone put a state compliance command under the internal processing team's private space for commands.)
One of my vacation projects was trying to build a 3D model of the family cabin. Partially because it seemed cool, but partially because I want to document things like the septic system, where the various power and fiber connections are, and those little details that everyone keeps sketching from memory.
Sadly, my little Framework 16 can't handle the photogrammetry because its AMD and only has 8 GB GPU and 32 GB CPU.
One of the folks at the writing group is into AI, which means they had a 96 GB machine. But they also realized that local AI isn't that useful so it was sitting idle. I hoped to borrow it, but it is also AMD and I can't use the major programs which are CUDA only.
Still hoping, just discouraging.
The dishwasher installers, two lovely younger men, and I were talking and I mentioned I liked anime. They got excited and asked what I liked.
"Oh, Slayers, Tenchi, Saber Marionette J, anything by CLAMP. Hellsing. Maze Mega Burst Space. Irresponsible Captain Taylor. That type of things."
I1: "I've never heard of those. They must be old."
I2: "That's old person anime."
...
He was laughing so I took it as teasing.
They also never heard of Delicious in Dungeon... so we talked about that.
Today at the writing group, someone was waxing poetic about how French was the best language for swearing.
That isn't true.
German is the best. I like German swearing.
They have to come next week to finish installing the dryer.
My innate distrust of anyone who uses m@!{2,}@ in a conversation is being tested heavily today.
I have to put pants on today.
Today is not a good day.
All four appliances are ordered. Second attempt at the dishwasher is going in today. New clothes washer and dryer on Friday, stove next week.
Going to make the IKEA order today.
Hopefully the end of a very expensive month.
IKEA's website specifically forbids plus code emails. :(
