Trying out Ellipsus Plus "Writing Insights"
Aug. 31st, 2026 09:00 amIn my quest for a grammar checker that doesn't flirt with generative AI, either in doing genAI analysis you don't want or feeding your words to their training data, I thought I'd try Ellipsus Plus and their "Writing Insights".
This morning, I fed it about 10k words worth of fic I'll be posting soon. Hoping to throw into it a couple of chapters of both my original novels later during the week before the trial ends, too. I guess first, my bad: it doesn't look like this is actually a grammar checker. More like a style checker? But word echoes, sentence lengths, etc are still very useful things I try to fix during my final "proofreading" phase ahead of posting fic or sending a doc to beta-readers, and I liked a lot of their tools.
Also, please allow me to emphasise again how customer-friendly and user-friendly Ellipsus is: you don't need a credit card to start the 7-day trial. Not only that, but they offer a "lifetime" one-time payment plan if you don't want a subscription. And not only-not only that!! If you pick the subscription option, it builds up toward a lifetime licence, so after a couple of years the subscription ends and you own it. I can't think of any other subscription-based service that offers that (or if they do, it sure isn't as obvious and clear as Ellipsus makes it!)
Now, what worked well for me, and what I'm still unfortunately missing. Note that this is obviously based on my personal grammar and prose weaknesses.
The good!
- I really like how it highlights all sentences e.g. if you click Preview on the passive voice section, you'll see all of the passive sentences -- and only them -- highlighted. So you can scroll and focus on those only.
- Even though my computer is old, the reports and highlights load pretty fast! (I wouldn't modify stuff while the highlights are on, though)
- Repetition in sentence starts: "'She' starts 3+ sentences in a row" -- I do need that check!
- The word echoes are good. Again, it highlights all the sentences, with a darker highlight on the word repeated (like "around", which I apparently use way too much in smut). Note: I copy-pasted one chapter or scene at a time. I suspect the report might get overwhelming and not be as useful if you run it on a full novel or a very long doc.
- The sentence lengths report is also great! This one highlights your entire text in 4 shades of blue (for short/medium/long/very long sentences), and it makes it easy to see where there's variety, and more importantly for me, where there are too many big ass long sentences. I do my best to break those up during editing (before that final proofreading pass!), but I always miss a few. It's super cool how obvious it is when you suddenly have an entire paragraph entirely dark in the middle. (Long-ass sentences probably don't help with my pacing issues btw XD)
- Note that the passive voice check isn't very good (a lot of active sentences with the verb "to be" picked up, e.g. "We're fighting, then?") but that's fine and pretty common with these checks in my experience. It's still an easy report to scan through.
- The adverbs and repeated phrases reports are nice for a quick scan too. I didn't go in-depth with the adverbs, mostly checking there weren't too many repetitions, but for the repeated phrases I nearly always modified something when I had 4-word (or more!) repeated phrase, so it's quite neat.
The bad? Well. Many of the actual grammar bits, unfortunately, but that's on me!
Turns out Insights is not actually advertised as a grammar checker, that was my misunderstanding. Whoops.

I was building this list for myself as I tried it all out, then figured I might as well make a post out of it so I can refer back to it later? It's also a handy list of stuff to check as I continue on my quest for grammar checkers. What tools do you use for grammar? Any rec under the "no thanks AI actually" column? Or tips to remember the rules better in the first place? ;) Then again, some of my problems are rule issues, but just as often it's just distracted typos that happen regardless of knowledge...
Life Events Bingo Fest + Sunday Night Check-In
Aug. 31st, 2026 02:46 amI thought I'd give this a try. I've already got one little ficlet almost finished.
It's amazing how when you have a fandom you're obsessed with, it's easier to write fic. LOL. Just planning on some small ficlets though... There was a time when I wrote tons of 100-200 word drabbles. With having a fandom I'm obsessed with, suddenly I'm lucky if I can write anything under 400. I haven't written any huge multi-chapter stories yet, but I'd like to eventually. It's just such a huge commitment when I've got a million little ideas waiting to be written.
| Guilt | Pride | Rage |
| Longing | Grief | Happiness |
| Helplessness | Astonishment | Jealousy |
I fear I'm biting off more than I can chew. 😂🤣 I'm planning a Miami Vice digital fanzine, and one of these days I have to get back to my San Francisco PI series. Not to mention the other series that I started last year (let's not mention it). And there's Halloween coming up, so I'm going to want to write some fic for that, and the holidays are coming up fast -- means work is about to get brutal.
The last time I wrote anything that wasn't Miami Vice was in January, and that was for the Three-Sentence Ficathon. So, before that, the last time I wrote a real story that wasn't MV was in September 2025. Right before I started watching MV. What a coincidence. 😁🤣
Games and Shows, oh my! (potential spoilers)
Aug. 30th, 2026 09:39 pmWelp, if you told my younger self that I would ever icon Lana Lang, I'd probably would have laughed at you.... but well, I did it. But I did really love Superman & Lois' version of Lana a lot, maybe it was her writing or casting - I'm not quite sure. I really enjoyed making these icons, I'm proud at how well the textures came out with the cropping/images. And I just signed up/did the icons in the nick of time since the challenge ends September 1st.
Games
Dreamlight Valley apparently already had Lucky - but as a pet... which fine - that doesn't give me a lot of hope that they'd at least give us Perdita & Pongo like the Lady & Tramp plus the animals from the Lion King. I did finally get Maleficent though! Still haven't gotten to Aurora but maybe later this week or next. The game keeps glitching so I have to restart it a bunch.
Shows

Anyway I think that's it as of right now - I need to go find my phone and then get ready for bed since it's after 11 already. So maybe next time will be a Supergirl and Spider-Man: Brand New Day review.... which would be good because I do want to watch them again anyway.

One last adventure
Aug. 30th, 2026 09:08 pmIt's really stunning, looking at the carving and knowing that the people who made them lived and died and made their mark at least 6000 years ago, and here we are still looking at them and learning their stories and appreciating them.
There are two trails in the park, so we walked one of them.
( nature )
Feeling, I think, a little desperate to extend the Last Day, we stopped for dinner in Peterborough at a cute Mexican place. Our waiter, whose hand was swollen from a wasp sting the day before, was very friendly when we said we were from Toronto, and suggested we visit the Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden. Alas, it was about to close, but we did get a glimpse.
( cool Buddhist things )
Finally, we stopped at an abandoned gas station for moody, atmospheric pictures of slow rural decay.
( the age of cars is ending )
And now it's off to sleep if I can; tomorrow looms.
Fic in a Box 2026 Letter (updated Aug. 31 2026)
Aug. 31st, 2026 02:37 amThanks for looking at my letter! My full requests for this round can be found here. This year I have very broad blanket medium opt-ins for my requests, all of which should at minimum have the following opt-ins:
Length Opt-In: Any Nominated Opt-In
Medium Opt-In: Any - Any Nominated Medium
Medium Opt-In: Art - Any Nominated Art Medium
Medium Opt-In: Combined Media - Any Nominated Combined Media Medium
Medium Opt-In: Combined Media - Any Nominated In-Universe Media
Medium Opt-In: Unique Rules - Any Nominated Unique Medium
Some requests may have additional specific mediums that are also opted into in the request or here in the letter, which you can basically interpret as extra prompts. I especially love mixed media, interactive fiction in basically any form, storytelling done via in-universe mediums or experimental formats like puzzles, and multiple formats per gift, as well as fanworks that remix and iterate on existing fanworks, including anything I've created or received for the fandom. But I also love a good classic drabble or drabble series, so honestly, feel free to go wild.
This letter is still under construction. For returning fandom requests, please also check the plot and medium prompts from my letter from last year. My past prompts in other exchanges may also prove helpful. You're also absolutely welcome and encouraged to use your own prompts if we happened to match on a fandom you also request!

Solo: Garrett (Thief Original Series)
Solo: Viktoria (Thief Original Series)
WB: Any (Thief Series (Video Games))
WB: The Final Glyph (Thief Original Series)
WB: The Shalebridge Cradle (Thief Original Series)
- What-ifs and AUs: fix-its, break-it-more, and also worldbuilding (tied to specific characters or not) filling in gaps in the game, like more spooky horror surrounding the Shalebridge Cradle and its history (and future!) - I just love the Evil Building trope okay - as well as what the hell happened during the finale of the third game.
- Full-on "What if the Pagans win?" is fascinating to me - what does it look like for the City? Whether it's through the first game ending in a different way or something exploring the aftermath of the second game, with the pendulum swinging back to favour the Pagans (whether or not Viktoria survives to see it).

WB: Agency Operations After OMNI Mainframe (Invisible Inc)
WB: Agency Recruitment Process (Invisible Inc)
WB: Any (Invisible Inc. (Video Game))
WB: The neural uplink interface (Invisible Inc)
- I'd love to see the post-canon space explored more: witnessing the campaign's events through agent POVs (boots on the ground vs. an MIA recovered weeks/months after the fact), the immediate aftermath of the OMNI mainframe (where do they even go? how does Central keep leading the team after that?), and reestablishing the agency (or not!) after that. Something I really like about the canon events is how much it shakes everything up: maybe agents who previously barely tolerated each other are now battle-forged partners, or on the contrary, the stress has them at each other's throats and barely holding on. The potential for survivor's guilt alone is delicious. As grueling as the campaign week was, maybe the weeks and months after are what make them nearly fall apart?
- I'd also love a look deep into the past: more agent recruitment stories and how they got here, etc. I already mention meet-uglies in my likes, but here it goes again: I love it when characters who end up being very important to each other meet under the worst circumstances and just get the worst impressions of each other, and/or nearly end up killing each other: whether it's Decker being one hair away from turning Central in when he first meets her, or Shalem nearly taking out Internationale, (and not just for dinner, hah), or Banks and Prism nearly ruining each other's cons. Feel free to fudge the canon timelines to make it work, I won't judge.
- Fic remix wise, maybe something that explores an alternate ending and rock-bottom Xu/Decker hook-up in a scenario similar to my fic The Bismuth Job?
- Pick a ship, any ship, and write the most devastating slow burn you can think of :) Platonic ships and characters becoming a matched friendship set counts!
- I have a special fondness for drama and heavy stuff told through outsider POVs or dry, detached formats, like mission reports, psychological evaluations, Operator mission logs, corporate article clippings in the datalog style, etc. A lovers' spat between agents who are trying to keep things on the down-low that's just barely visible through tense word choices in a mission log? Count me in! Also, relationships staying secret (including in the purely UST sense) until one party sees the other nearly get killed on a mission or almost fail to come back, and struggling to keep their cool about it, is A++.
- I'd honestly love to see whatever cool idea you feel like exploring for any of these, though. All of my past round's prompts for this should basically still be applicable, too.
NEUROMANCER
Fandom promo (of sorts)
Molly Millions & Wintermute (Neuromancer)
Solo: Henry Dorsett Case (Neuromancer)
Solo: Molly Millions (Neuromancer)
Solo: Wintermute (Neuromancer)
WB: Any (Neuromancer | Sprawl Trilogy - William Gibson)
- I'd love to see more of canon's themes and settings explored - Case's perspective is ultimately so narrow that it's hard not to wonder what else he's missing. Were there other hackers Wintermute approached? How did Wintermute and Neuromancer attain sentience? What made Wintermute choose the team it did for the big heist?
- Simstims, cyberspace and the matrix, but make it weirder. I find it interesting that Case has this detached view of himself in cyberspace as being a truer, freer version of himself, but he still can't quite move past it to really consider who he is in cyberspace (where he can be anything he wants, and what it means).
- The scenes in the novel of the AIs purposefully messing with him via a simulation that's indistinguishable from reality are incredibly fun. I'd love to see more in the same vein, whether Case is involved or not. Maybe some kind of Twine or other interactive fiction about trying to escape that kind of virtual reality?
- I love Freeside and how much it draws on speculative sci-fi, like trapping and redirecting sunlight.
- More canon-typical heists with cyberspace and simstim assistance would be great
- I'd love to see a normally art-only format like a dress-up game used in a more narrative/storytelling way, like a character (Case, Molly, or even one of the AIs) trying on different parts/elements of appearance and identity in order to figure out who they are. But even a "simple" dress-up game of Molly's outfits and augmentations through the ages would go hard
- Specifically for the comic and fancomic remix prompt, I have one non-crossover fic written for this fandom with some scenes I'd love to see serving as the inspiration for visuals (doesn't have to be super faithful): for example, Wintermute shifting through virtual avatars to find one that it can better use to manipulate- er, establish a productive rapport with Case (or anyone else) with some demon imagery or Faust visual allusions could be super fun. Or maybe Wintermute and Neuromancer figuring each other out?

Fic in a Box Exchange Letter
Aug. 30th, 2026 06:53 pmCousinShelley at AO3.
Please don't feel constrained by my prompts. I ramble about what I love and offer a lot of ideas mostly because it's fun for me. The ideas are there if you want one. And if a fandom has fewer prompts and less rambling than some others, that doesn't mean I love or want it any less.
General Do Not Wants (DNWs)
- Major character death, noncon, underage
- 1st-person POV except epistolary, 2nd-person POV that involves romance or sex, readerfic
- AUs (setting, omegaverse, genderswap, etc.), including speculative elements like ghosts or sex pollen in non-speculative canons. Canon divergence AU is fine
- Non-canon disabling or fatal illness or injury, self-harm, suicide
- Unrequested gender, asexuality and neurodivergence headcanons
- Cruelty to animals or animal death
- Crossovers, crack fic
- Kidfic, pregnancy or birth of any kind, including eggs
- BDSM, consent negotiations, toys, generic dirty talk, calling someone slut, whore or mommy/daddy
- Vomiting, coughing up anything, flatulence, body secretions or wastes (except sweat and blood). Come is fine, even a brief description, but please don’t focus on it.
General Things I Like
- Friendship, found families, loyalty, love, deep emotional connections, devotion, displays of affection and respect
- Third person POV
- Flirting, pining, sexual tension, getting together, mutual pining with a happy ending, unrequited love finally realized
- Missing scenes and fix-its, as well as case-fic and plotty stories
- Protectiveness and characters sacrificing their own comforts to help others, anything for you
- Hurt/comfort, especially after a nightmare, tending wounds, caring for them when they're ill or injured, hovering after something traumatic and trying to take their mind off things
- Tropes like only one bed and every other possible bedsharing scenario, fake couple/marriage leading to the inability to keep hiding feelings, undercover as gay that leads to feelings realization, forced proximity, and bonus if there’s peril
- First kiss, first times, first realization of feelings, thank god you're alive/we're alive kisses and hugs
- Humor, snark and banter, laughing and joking with each other
- Happy or at the very least ambiguously hopeful endings
- I like stories with no sex, fade-to-black, or full-on smut, so write whatever level you prefer.
- I do like at least as much if not more focus on the emotions as on what body part goes where or what position people are in.
- Porn with feelings and emotional or romantic sex
- Dubcon when requested
- Desperate kisses and one or both partners overwhelmed with passion and feelings
- Manhandling and displays of strength, up against the wall sex
- Kneeling (any reason but especially for oral sex or to kiss knees or thighs or anything like that, grand)
- Penetrative sex, oral sex, fingers, frottage, mutual masturbation or one watching the other
- Naked and half-naked or one clothed and the other naked, basically any combo of clothed/not clothed
- Necking, petting, face and neck and body stroking, kissing and/or sucking or licking pretty much anywhere
- I really like up against the wall, taken from behind, and one riding the other, but any positions are fine
- Thank god you're/we're alive sex
- One character being suddenly so overcome with feeling and desire for the other they kiss them and initiate things out of the blue, like they can't wait another second, love those big music swell moments
- Sex pollen scenarios in speculative canons, especially with one or both try to resist, thinking the other wouldn't want it (but they really do) and all the angst and feelings that go along with that
- With appropriate pairings, like vampires, blood drinking and/or licking blood off the other’s mouth, face, neck, etc. can’t go wrong.

I'd love to see into the past with Wyck, Mark and Gerrie. I'm okay if it's a V-shaped attraction, with Wyck having feelings for both of them separately, but I'm equally okay if it's not V-shaped. Please no sexual situations before they're all 16, but I'm fine with them flirting and showing affection and growing attraction. What happened after Mark died? Was it just the trauma of it that ended Wyck and Gerrie's dating, or did Wyck stay away out of guilt (this seems likely to me). I'd love to see them wrestle with the aftermath of Mark's death or them in happier times, maybe wrestling with (or not) attraction.
For Wyck/Tom/Patricia, fleshing out anything that happened that we didn't get to see (like Wyck and Patricia opening that casket) or more moments from Tom's mushroom trip, or them coming to terms with what happened after the ending of S1. Any lore, new thing they have to tackle or expansion on what we already saw would be great.
I think the Reddit posts could be hilarious and/or a little creepy, articles (maybe Tom thinks he can write something about how great a destination the island is - or something else), or Wyck sending unhinged sounding letters to the editor before or after. I love the caring the three of them had for each other, the humor, and the lore and horror of it so much. I'm okay with G or PG-rated as long as the feelings are there, and any rating on up.
Prompts coming as of 8/31
Our Flag Means Death
- Izzy Hands/Evelyn Higgins
Fandom-specific DNW: References to or foreshadowing of Izzy's death.
I adore Evelyn and think she and Izzy would be fire together.
I don't care how you get them in the same place at the same time. You can set it long before the show or in some canon divergence during/after or hand-wave it away. It can be before or after Izzy's unicorn leg, I don't care. I just think an enemies-to-lovers story would be great with them disliking each other immediately and intensely and that turning into something hot, though I'd be happy with anything, whether it never gets beyond banter and flirting or evolves into more.
She would give zero fucks what he thinks, and I love that, and I think he would too. Her being much taller than him also floats my boat, especially if he's comfortable with it or even enjoys it.
It would be nice to see Evelyn treated like a lady (or however she wants to be treated!) and for someone who feels something for Izzy to treat him like they care, even if they argue much of the time.
I'm okay with Izzy dealing with his pining for Ed a little bit, at least in the beginning, so there's no need to pretend that wasn't a thing (unless you want to, then it's fine). But if you do bring it up, please don't do much more that mention it or use it to compare to how he feels about Evelyn at the time to show that the current goings-on are much more positive or that he likes how he feels better, etc.
It doesn't have to have a happily ever after, but let it be a happy for now and maybe more later kind of thing, at least. Basically, even if he leaves at the end in an "until next time" scenario (which would be fine!), I wouldn't want him to have had great fun with Evelyn and then go back to pining for Ed.
Some prompts:- Ed disappeared in search of Stede at the end of S1 instead of breaking bad, so Izzy goes in search of him in Stede's town and meets Evelyn, or they run into each other at any point, even canon-divergent post-canon or pre-Stede, for some reason.
- Izzy meets her because he's been tasked with kidnapping or killing her as some kind of old debt or favor. She's clearly been up to some shit and maybe has enemies. He ends up admiring her and turns on the person who wanted her dead. Protective Izzy is a good thing.
- Murder as bonding! Izzy teaches her some sword moves to help her protect herself or just for fun. I also love the idea of them committing murder or otherwise getting up to mischief together. Maybe someone's threatening Evelyn and they take care of the problem.
- Izzy is touch-starved and Evelyn fixes that for him. And/or he talks about Ed and she makes it pretty clear she knows he's got it bad but shows him that there are other options out there.
- Good old hurt/comfort can never go wrong. Izzy is hurt and Evelyn takes care of him. Hurt Evelyn with Izzy as caretaker works for me too.
- I'm all in for something where there's hand kissing, finger sucking, bandaging a hand, stroking a hand as things that really move and/or excite one or preferably both of them.
- Kneeling for almost any reason, including Izzy removing/putting on her clothing/shoes or to perform oral sex would also be a treat. Izzy kneeling and hand/finger kissing/sucking would lay me out.
- A regular old meet-cute, maybe they're out drinking, dining, dancing, whatever, where they get to know each other and realize they're both rascally bastards would be great too.
I just think a story with these two at the center would be amazing. Let them lose control with each other or never even get to a proper kiss as long as there's obvious sexual tension and attraction there. It'll be fun no matter what.
Evil
- Ben Shakir & Karima Shakir
- Ben Shakir & the Bouchard Daughters
I'd love to see Ben and Karima together, period. Ben the Magnificent and the kids are one of my favorite things, and him being someone they trust to tell things even more, so almost any scenario that includes them would be great. This is an exception to my kidfic DNW.
Opt-Ins:
- Length Opt-In: 500 minimum words per fic
- Medium Opt-In: Writing - In-Universe Excerpts from a Character's Notebook
- Medium Opt-In: Art - Drawn - Comics
- Medium Opt-In: Art - Drawn - Fanart
- Medium Opt-In: Art - Tarot Card
- Medium Opt-In: Art - Stained Glass Style Art
A few prompts:
Ben & Karima
- I adore Ben's relationship with Karima. I'm still intrigued by what the smart home device said about her baby being with the Muslim equivalent of the devil and her just refusing to discuss it with him, so exploring that could be interesting.
- I'd be equally interested to see him working things out about his struggle to stay skeptical with Karima and how he comes to a decision about it, even temporarily.
- Maybe Ben marvels over Karima's hacking skills in any situation, or is visibly proud of her to David and Kristen, or just them bantering over anything.
- I LOVE Karima helping Ben figure stuff out. More Ben and Karima at the Super Secret Science League. That whole episode and their closeness was such a blast!
- Ben telling her about the elevator game and confessing that it's messed him up, and her comforting him. I'd love to see his trauma explored a little more than it has been on the show, with her supporting him. And I'd love to see him telling her about it and her freaking out about almost losing him with them both still not quite believing it all.
- Sibling high-fives and hugs! Snarking at each other! Arguing and making up! More Ben and Karima being close siblings, period.
- Karima sleeping over because they're so involved in whatever mystery they're trying to unravel or supernatural thing they're trying to debunk and experiencing something unexplainable in his apartment (seeing the succubus? Finding a retainer? Thinking she sees a demon?)
- Or Karima meeting Ben's ex who appears to have killed the spirit of her twin and giving him her no-nonsense opinion (same with finding out about the gal he slept with at the cult compound).
Ben & the girls
- I'd love to see a scene where Ben just doesn't take in the information about Leland being on a child's app in quite so much stride but instead asks more questions and learns the whole story. What does he do about it, and how does he plan to tell Kristen?
- I think a canon divergence where they go to him when they realize it's Leland and basically look over his shoulder while he pretends to be one of them and records it to bust him later could be fun.
- He could teach them some scientific principle or show them an experiment or something. Or help them plan some surprise for their parents.
- Whether working out the bit about Leland, working on the plumbing, babysitting on an ordinary evening, helping one of the girls with a common real-world problem, discovering Lexis' tail, anything where they help each other in some way or he takes care of them would be great.
- Ben needing to rescue one of the girls and figuring out how to do it, and basically being a big-ass hero.
- Ben making PSA videos to show ids the fakery in scary videos online with the girls helping could be pretty neat, so a scene where they do that could be fun. Or where one or more get freaked out by a video and he demonstrates for them to show it's fake.
Riptide
- Cody Allen/Nick Ryder
- Cody Allen/Nick Ryder & Murray Bozinsky
Nick and Cody are constantly in each other's personal bubble in a way that would feel awkward to most people, even the closest of friends. The whole show is like they're lovers who just haven't figured that out yet. When one sits down the other practically sits in his lap, and neither of them bat an eye.
And of course they've been there for each other through thick and thin, took care of each other in Vietnam, live together, sleep in the same room and even work together. There's only one way for them to get closer, and if you want to go there I will be on board, but it's also great if you write them getting to shippy without sex.
I'd really rather avoid a bunch of angst about being gay or bi in the 80s and worries about HIV, but I do like when one is afraid to make it known because they worry about damaging the friendship, and the happiness when it's revealed that of course nothing could damage the friendship and they felt the same all along, yay!
I really love all the getting together scenarios, whether with just revelation of feelings or all the way to sexy times. I also enjoy stories with Boz trying to keep them in line and inject logic into the situation. The guys having to rescue him or him teaming up with one of them to rescue the other is always a winner.
A few prompts:
- Peril and concern for each other, like one getting kidnapped for some reason and the other frantic to rescue them. And if the cops think the kidnapped one is dead but the other refuses to give up and accept that, I love that kind of stuff. One rescuing the other, doesn't matter which is which, is great.
- Undercover as gay is a winner here. Maybe they have to pretend to be a couple for a case and it makes them realize some things. And if they're in a hotel or somewhere and, oh no, there's only one bed, all the better. Sex isn't necessary for me to enjoy the story even in a bedsharing situation, but if you want to write, I'll enjoy it!
- Being mistaken as a couple by someone on the outside, a new person they're helping with a case, and that person explaining why they thought that could be good. Someone pointing out that straight heterosexual guys don't generally sit almost in each other's laps when there are several feet of space on either side of them might make them realize some things. PTSD nightmares and flashbacks that have the other person comforting them, particularly with bedsharing, is great. I like one dreaming of the other dying and waking up frantic to grab ahold of him to assure himself he's okay. Lots of touching, holding, grabbing, that kind of thing. They're very handsy with each other, so more of that!
- One gets shot while they're on a case, and they can't get to help right away so the other has to take care of them until help comes. In any kind of danger situation, the whole "not him, take me instead" thing is fantastic both for the self-sacrifice of it but what it does to the other person. I like a lot of angst, as long as there's a happy ending. Also a fan of one being tortured to hurt the other in a hostage/kidnapping situation where they're trying to get information about something or just revenge, as long as the hurt one is rescued before it gets too bad.
- For a lighter story, maybe the guys get invited to some conference and though they have the opportunity to date a couple gorgeous women, they prefer to hang out together instead. Feel free to have Murray there, maybe he drags them to something they're not looking forward to, and end up going off alone to do the same kinds of things they'd do on the Riptide, and start to realize what that means.
- One getting jealous over the other is always great, as long as it ends up resolved with them together.

I'd enjoy anything from write-ups and reviews about June Ross-Mitchell's book, to magazine and newspaper articles about Jack, the show, or Lilly and the cult. Jack's journal entries, or anyone else's, psychological reports for post-canon Jack, write-ups about the Grove, basically anything related to canon including on-set art.
This movie nailed the aesthetic, attitudes and some of the cheese of 70s talk shows, so I'd have loved it for that, but then it included things like Bohemian Grove and James Randi with a wink and different names and did such a good job of never quite letting you decide whether you knew exactly what was going on.
I'm really fascinated by the idea that Delroy made a devil's bargain for fame, because he clearly didn't get what he wanted. He'd be infamous as a murderer, sure, but if people at the Grove knew that their deals were likely to be twisted that way, there'd be a lot fewer deals being made. And it's a lot more interesting to me that the deal wasn't cruelly twisted into making him famous in a way he clearly didn't want but that something went wrong at some point. I feel like Jack might have been smart enough to ask specifically to be the top-rated nighttime talk show host and not just make some amorphous wish for "fame" that could be fulfilled by what happened.
Pick any time or place. Older show segments, a fix-it or a different ending (it can still be bad), post-canon shows or events, backstory, expanding the show that's shown in the film, something set at the Grove. I'll enjoy pretty much anything.
DNW Exception: I'm waiving my major character death (except for Jack - please don't kill him). Anyone but Jack is fair game, and things can end up as bad or worse than in canon if you want. I'm also waving my typical noncon DNW. I'd rather it not be explicit or lengthy, but noncon seems suitable for what might go on at The Grove, post-deal or post-canon, whether by another person or something else.
Prompts:
- Why did the deal go so wrong? Did he fall short on his end of the bargain and end up punished for it rather than finally beating Carson legitimately and becoming the biggest talk show star? I'd love to see an exploration of how the whole thing progressed and why it ended the way it did.
- I love the idea that when Jack made his deal, he didn't knowingly and willingly understand that the price would be his wife's life. I got the sense that he truly adored her, even though he took up with June pretty quickly (or maybe had been with her before Madeleine died). When did he understand what had happened? Did he try to get out of it before she died to save her? Did he never put it together? How long was he in denial? How much of the deal did he understand?
- Maybe he made the deal knowing the stated price but not really believing it and just playing along because of the desire to hobnob with powerful star-making people, and then having to deal with the consequences and regret.
- I can also see a great story coming out of him knowingly making the deal (even though my heart wants him to not have known it was real). If he knowingly traded his wife for fame, was it a marriage for appearances he wanted out of it to be with June or just to be free, so he readily agreed? Did he expect it would be sudden and quick rather than her having to suffer so much? Was he offered a can't-say-no deal where he had to choose the lesser of two or more evils, and Madeleine dying that way was the best option?
- What happened during the six months he stayed off the air? Was that something calculated as part of his rise to fame, was it mostly mourning, or something else?
- I loved the nod to James Randi (of whom I've been a lifelong admirer) and his million-dollar challenge. I'd love anything exploring Haig's history on the show with Jack and Gus. Previous segments, behind-the-scenes stuff, or if you want to lean into Haig's hypocrisy at the end wanting to go to the Grove, Jack getting Haig invited and taking him there and being all kinds of conflicted about it would be great.
- I'd also enjoy an alternate ending where nobody dies and Jack finally hits #1 in late night. Because of this he's expected to keep going to the Grove and the cost of continuing his fame has to be dealt with. Bringing others in, like maybe Haig, could be part of that. Does he know he paid for this with Madeleine's life at this point? Is he planning to reveal everything to an audience in some kind of revenge? Is he supposed to use his show to help demons find victims in his audience? There are a lot of ideas to explore here. Does Gus know something's wrong? Is Madeleine there where only he can see her, taunting him, encouraging him, making him miserable or making him want to burn everything down?
- Was Jack used as part of another deal to kill Lilly and set right what went wrong when she escaped? Or maybe she does die on the show, but it's more an accidental or self-defense, she attacks Jack and it's not his fault, and that starts a path of demonic influence for his show that he tries to escape from.
- I'd love to see how he and June met and how the whole idea of her bringing Lilly onto the show was hatched. Who orchestrated it, or was it a completely chance encounter? Was part of his bargain (knowingly or not) bringing her and the demon to his show, and after they met they just hit it off? Was she supposed to replace Madeleine and give demons access to both Jack and his audience? Any of their history would be great. I'd also like to see more of him and Madeleine before and after the Grove. Did she suspect that her illness had anything to do with it?
- The mass hypnosis angle and the trance-like states, especially Jack's at the end, leave room for so many possibilities. How much of the entire movie was real, and could some of it, including the ending, have been only an illusion to show Jack the many ways his life could go if he didn't play ball with the Grove elite? Another idea would be what happens afterward? Do the Grove elites and dark forces swoop in to make things disappear and keep Jack from suffering any consequences? How much of what he thinks happened does he discover was an illusion later, including deaths? An exorcism on the show where the demon's driven out of Lilly (maybe into someone else) without all the murder (or a little less of it) could be fun.
- Maybe he was offered the deal and turned it down, and all hell's breaking loose because of that? Maybe bringing Lilly on the show is some sort of mixed-up plan to make a deal with that demon for revenge against the people who hurt his wife (and maybe he doesn't firmly believe it's possible but he's desperate).
- Anything drawing on the lore of the cult and their rituals and why getting rid of Lilly in this particular way would be great too. I love the idea of dark forces manipulating everything and all the machinations behind that, especially with Jack thinking he's doing all the decision-making and that it has nothing to do with (or little to do with) his trip to the Grove.
- I'd love anything to do with any of the characters on the show too. I loved Gus, he seems like such a sweet guy who was genuinely concerned about the bad things happening. Anything with him and Jack, either on the show or behind the scenes would be great. Another show with Haig, or backstage discussions, or at a Hollywood party or somewhere else.
The Exorcist
- Marcus Keane/Tomas Ortega
I don't care whether you choose S1 or S2 or go post-canon, with a new take on something that's already happened or a brand new situation altogether. Any characters you want to add are fine as long as Marcus and Tomas are the focus.
Fandom-specific DNWs: Don't make god a hero in the story. No divine intervention that saves the day, please. References to canon Marcus/Peter and Tomas/Jessica are fine.
Prompts for ideas, but feel free to write something else!
- Marcus doesn't leave Tomas at the end but stays to help him through what will surely be some post-demon PTSD. Okay, I want there to be post-demon PTSD, not sorry. The hurt/comfort is strong with these two.
- I love nightmares and the hurt caused by them especially when there's someone close to by to offer comfort afterward. A dream or series of them where first-season dark Marcus is whispering things in Tomas' ear would be good, too. Or possessed-Marcus does it when awake, and it can lead to some sort of seduction or not, dubconny in the no-no-yes vein or not (but no non-con). How would they deal with it afterward? Even a situation where it almost happens but doesn't is ripe for some great introspection and character/relationship stuff.
- I really like the idea of one or the other having those intense dreams where the other menaces them in the sexiest of ways, and each night the dreams escalate, and they start to have trouble separating reality from their dreams when they wake up so they might do or say things that would not be forward with the dream other but are unexpected in real life, and the one not affected has to suss out what's going on.
- If Marcus were convinced that god was sending him a message that loving someone and expressing that through sex wouldn't make him less of an exorcist, that'd be really great. Tomas might point out that he'd know if that were evil with his newfound skills and all.
- Just about anything--post-exorcism conversation and comfort (I loved the bar scene at the end of season 1), navigating each other's spaces, a story about something they did together between S1 and S2, investigating the church.
- Any hurt/comfort scenario, expansion on any episode from either season, or any situation where one or the other is possessed and fighting it to keep from hurting the other and has to be exorcised. I truly love that stuff.
- A lighter story that involves Marcus teaching Tomas his ways, maybe with Tomas messing up quite a lot, and them not entirely exhausted all the time or in danger would be great, too. As long as there's obvious shippy affection between them, even if they're both fighting it, and lots of touching and standing far too close together, I'm down.
- Dubcon where the demons decide that helping/pushing Marcus and Tomas to get together will destroy them through guilt or whatever, but nope, it just makes them stronger (after some initial guilt and hand-wringing, probably).
- Either Tomas or Marcus hurt and in the hospital--I'm amazed most of the show wasn't one of them recuperating in a hospital bed, frankly--with the other by their side.
Starsky & Hutch
- Ken Hutchinson/David Starsky
- Ken Hutchinson/David Starsky & Huggy Bear Brown
I still love these two so much *smears hand across mouth* years later because of the friendship and love between them. They're also incredibly physically present in each other's personal bubble, so lots and lots of that will make me happy. These two were each other's beginning and end, no matter how many blondes of the week the show tried to toss in there. And it still has one of the most perfect final episodes of any TV show, for my money. I. Adore. It.
A scene or story directly from one of the peril-of-the-week episodes for either guy would be great. One hurt, the other freaking out, rescuing, comforting and caring for him, that would be fantastic. Them dealing with trauma together and working things out. Lots of touching, teasing, joking around, anything canon-typical but with the tension cranked up to make it a definite / relationship would be super. This is such a good hurt/comfort fandom, too. I mean *gestures at it*.
Post-canon, a story showing Hutch taking care of Starsky after he's discharged from the hospital and helping him recuperate (or set after that), and that leading to a new aspect of their relationship, would also be great.
- I like S&H going undercover, and if they needed cops to play gay to get close to some kingpin or something, it'd be great if they realize feelings while pretending, but I also think it'd be great if only one goes undercover with the cop who's an expert on the person they're after, and it makes the other one jealous.
- That prompt would work without them playing gay, too. One goes undercover with a female cop, and the other is crazy jealous. If the one not part of the couple is also undercover and around to witness the couple stuff, even better.
- Any kind of expansion on what we saw on the show, like Starsky having to help Hutch through fighting his addiction after that episode is over, any kind of hurt/comfort and recuperation for either of them would be great.
- In the episode where the woman they were both hot for was going to come between them, and she basically offered not to choose and for the three of them to be together, first I loved that they turned her down and walked away with their arms around each other. Maybe that makes them realize things? Or maybe they don't turn her down and give it a try, and find that they end up neglecting her in favor of each other anyway. She could point that out, even.
- I'm a big fan of trauma causing nightmares that require help from a partner to get through, and these two have had their share of nightmare-inducing situations.
- Being poisoned, being shot, being tortured and an intended sacrifice for a cult, ffs--write a post-ep story where the injured party has trouble sleeping, eating, or moving on and lots of comfort from the other.
- In any kind of danger situation, the whole "not him, take me instead" thing is fantastic both for the self-sacrifice of it but what it does to the other person. I like a lot of angst, as long as there's a happy ending.
- Also a fan of one being tortured to hurt the other in a hostage/kidnapping situation where they're trying to get information about something or just revenge, as long as the hurt one is rescued before it gets too bad. No permanent maiming or anything, just enough hurt to cause massive pain to the other party who's helpless to stop it.
- On the lighter side, the staff at Huggy's bar thinks they're a couple, and S&H are surprised by them, and then it starts to make sense. Or they're somewhere meeting new people and someone mildly familiar with them introduces them as a couple, and they go with it to be polite but have to figure out why people think that and what it means.

I'd love a story ranging from a missing scene(s) during canon, a canon divergence at any point after they met, or a post-canon tale. One or both can be hurt, tortured, turned in a vampire and/or menaced by a big bad Master, as long as they both stay alive (or undead).
I do want Jack and Adam to have actual feelings for each other underneath whatever's going on (and I'm happy for anything from getting together and purely shippy stuff to the horniest sex you want to write). I know Jack doesn't show much affection, or it comes with a slap in front of it, but I like to think he genuinely feels affection or more for the padre.
I love that he's a violent, impatient asshole. I want him to be those things. But I also want him to care. And seeing Adam won over to Jack's ways and roughen up a little over time is great too.
I love the ride-or-die and nobody gets to hurt you but me aspects of their relationship. Jack showing actual emotion toward Adam at some breaking point or because he's held it in so long would be great. All the tropes seem like they'd be great for this ship.
- One thinking the other is dead, completely losing it, and finding them alive is a favorite of mine and would be interesting no matter which character thinks the other is dead. I can see Jack wanting to burn down the world and having an emotional moment to discover Adam alive. I can also see Adam being devastated and maybe behaving more like Jack than before, and losing it when he discovers he's alive (and Jack being smug about how relieved Adam is). Them each thinking the other was dead would make an amazing reunion .
- One getting bitten and figuring that's the end, but it's not. Somehow they can stave off the transformation, or maybe they're on the trail of a cure so the bitten one becomes a vampire and has to travel with the other to get it. What happens? Is the cure difficult, maybe some religious blood magic/sex magic thing they have to do? There are a lot of fun possibilities.
- Either for a cure or just to protect Jack, Adam has to have sex with the person offering. I don't want on-page non-con if the encounter is in the story (his fear/dread and fade to black are fine though) and he can be physically hurt after, as well as traumatized (or totally okay, too) and Jack has to take care of him. His discovery at what Adam did and how he feels about it would be worth exploring.
- One of them has to pretend being evil or that they're betraying the other to work some plan to save them.
- I can't really think of a plausible scenario for them pretending to be a couple, but that would be a blast to read. Maybe they need information from someone in a gay bar and somebody's all over Adam, so Jack puts a stop to it by pretending they're together? Or the Church sends them on some mission where they have to pretend to be a couple for some crazy reason?
- It would also be great to see a situation where Adam has to pretend to be Jack and Jack has to pretend to be the priest for at least a while.
- I really like scenarios that involve some way for vampires to feed on humans without turning them unless they intend to. The discovery of some medicine, herb or ritual that makes a human immune to being turned from a simple bite could be so much fun. One of them who turns could feed on the other, for instance, while they're looking for a cure or just hunting other vamps.
- The ability for a human to stay human after being bitten would also lend itself to a lot of other great stories. Like a Master wanting Adam as his personal blood supply and/or sex object, and Jack losing his mind. I would be okay with a story where it's heavily implied that there's non-con happening and Adam has to deal with that after Jack rescues him, but please don't have it on-page. (Unwanted kissing and touching while the Master's toying with him if is fine, just not non-con sex except off-page and implied please.)
- Whether some ritual, or fighting off some sort of vampire mojo, or a discovery that sex is the way to save somebody from turning, whatever the case may be, a 'something made them do it' fic would be great, as long as they're both into by the end (and secretly at least somewhat into it at the start, if not totally and visibly on-board).

This show is so much fun. I love the canon friendships and working relationships. I'm looking for very canon-typical shenanigans. Art for any of the tags would be great. I love the newspaper front pages in the show credits. I think any of the Reddit posts or an advice column could be great, and an Ask Me Anything would be hilarious if whomever posted it keeps getting asked questions they can't answer honestly about paranormal things.
Any kind of paranormal case or everyday interactions between any of these characters would be great. I love their friendships, and really how O'Leary seems to be the lead and Minogue defers to her a lot. And I love how hell can break loose and their reaction is to explain the situation calmly and say "we'd better do something about that, hadn't we?" Any casefic or just casual conversation about anything driving around in the car or in Maaka's office would work for me. Any characters are welcome as long as O'Leary and Minogue are in there.
Prompts:
- After exposure to some paranormal creature Minogue starts to grow a tail or horns some other bizarre thing. I can picture him trying to hide it at first and then revealing it, and O'Leary taking it in stride. How do they solve the problem, or do they?
- They have to use a ouija board or some other device to try to contact someone who's passed on for information about a case? How crazily wrong could that go if they lose track of the letters and decipher the message incorrectly?
- One becomes psychic and drives the other crazy by constantly saying what will happen next, but only mundane things. Girl in the coffee shop's wearing purple today, before they get there, but not that someone naked is going to dash in front of their car, or something worth predicting.
- One gets possessed and the entity has messages show up on their skin or some other way, and they both keep interpreting the meanings wrong, but somehow fix it anyway. Or the possessed one keeps getting scolded by the others for being rude, pushy, nasty, whatever. O'Leary especially will not put up with that nonsense!
- Minogue, Parker or Maaka gets abducted by aliens, and can't convince the others that anything truly amazing/frightening/monumental happened. O'Leary especially keeps finding rational explanations for everything.
- The squad gets a new trainee who clearly has something very paranormally wrong with them (that it takes them forever to cotton onto) could be fun too. Does the new recruit really seem to become invisible sometimes or does Minogue just need glasses? Wasn't the new recruit a short man yesterday, so why is she a tall woman today? Did Minogue really see the new recruit jump fifteen feet to get a cat out of a tree, and the cat jumped down on its own, hissing and traumatized?
- Minogue or O'Leary has a girlfriend who turns out to be a monster (preferably inhuman in some way so there's no question that the relationship has to end, haha). How is it revealed and what do they do? Does the creature attack Parker and that's how they figure it out? The thought of Minogue posting to r/relationships or an advice column about this while O'Leary is warning him that it's about to his the fan is sending me.
- A story from the point of the view of a cameraman or someone on the crew that follows them around could be a lot of fun. Same with the POV of a new recruit they have to train or someone there to supervise and hand out performance evaluations.
Summer Site Updates
Aug. 30th, 2026 07:41 pmLast summer was me overhauling my entire site, and this summer was me updating it after neglecting it for a year, lol.
I saw ArimaMary's post about Coyote's Archive of Your Own and I finally had to admit to myself that it was a much better template for listing my fics than the one I was using. So I put it in my website, too! It was pretty straightforward; mostly I had to futz with the CSS to make it stylistically like up with the rest of the site and also make sure it played nice with the little bit of site-wide JS that I already have. And also add way more things to filter on, haha. But I like it a lot better now! It makes it easier to find which of my fics I wanna reread, at least.
Also earlier in July I reorganized my About Me page, adding a bunch of new subpages, and in the part of my site where I rec things I split them apart by type of rec because before they were grouped in admittedly odd ways ^^;
And just now I added the rest of the meta backlog I'd had to the site, so I can say I can be done with site updates for the summer :) My schedule's gonna fill up a lot in the coming months so I wont have time to work on it as much. But I'm happy with what I've accomplished~
So things I wanna poke at in the coming months and/or next summer:
- The Selfshipping wing of my site (it's mostly empty right now, and I'm gonna have to learn a wiki-style template for it all)
- The Fun and Games wing of my site (I wanna add a music player and a trope sorter game or two)
- A future part of my website that displays the icons I've made (probably living in the Fun and Games section?)
- I wanna make a "Linktree" landing page so I can get rid of my actual linktree.
- I need to remake my site button from scratch! I want it to match the aesthetic of my old graphics from Twitch, haha
"Beautiful Ugly" by Alice Feeney
Aug. 31st, 2026 12:12 amThe writing was perfunctory, the twists were so forced by literally conceits that they were simply silly, the characters made no sense and it was neither fun nor interesting to spend time with them.
And it sucks because there are the bones of a good novel in there. The isolated island and its inhabitants were creepy enough, the core of the protag was wonderfully pathetic. This could have been good. It just wasn't.
"I don't have to put up with this! I'm rich!" - Princess Vespa, Spaceballs (1987)
Aug. 30th, 2026 02:55 pmFor reasons not worth ever really delving into, ever, I tend to forget about the existence of over-the-counter medicine to treat symptoms. Leading to the many occassions of me saying "I don't have to put up with this! I'm rich!" and then taking pepto-bismal.
Today I remembered about the existence of cough drops.
I am here to report that Ludens wild cherry cough drops taste exactly the same as they did the last time I took them, whoever knows how long ago it was. I do know why I stopped buyihng them: because I ate too many and got stomach ache from it. But oh wow, these didn't change at all. The packaging sure looks different, though. I suppose that's to be expected.

Aug. 30th, 2026 01:39 pmIt was ridiculously hot this year (we went in August to accommodate assorted teaching schedules but will not be doing that again, apologies to our professor kids but ugh, we couldn't even play bocce until after the sun set, and even then it was better if we came directly out of the ocean to let the breeze be filtered by the water) and pretty low key, but #2's partner joined us for the first time, which was very fun; and we had a birthday to celebrate, which entailed eggs benedict for 15 and entirely too many Nothing-Bundt-Cake little baby bundts in more-or-less every flavor they offered, so y'know, typical Beach Week shenanigans.
Then I adulted really hard and got my screening colonoscopy done and god, that prep is so vile. The actual test is fine but that drink (even the low volume protocol) is nearly unbearable. Fortunately, I'm clear and don't have to do it again for another 10 years (blessings upon my brother for doing it every year--he got my mom's problems there.)
BUT. Because I did the evil thing, I took myself out on new-bookstore date the next day, which was delightful. And BabyBoy made Dolly Parton's recipe for banana pudding, which involves almost a dozen eggs, waaaaaaay more butter and sugar than you really want to think about, and 2 boxes of Nilla wafers as a treat for me. And then, circumstances being what they are in this bad, bad timeline, we ate it while watching Tim Curry run around and completely commit to the farce in Clue.
Coming soon: reading, watching, playing, crafting
