Bio
We are NLnet foundation. We support organisations and people who contribute to an open internet for all. If you are working on a project that helps fix the internet through open hardware, open software, open standards, open science and open data, we invite you to apply for a grant.
We're lead of the @NGIZero coalition which runs several programmes to fund those who are building free and open source technologies for the Next Generation Internet.
After an historical contribution to the early internet in Europe in the 1980's, we've been financially supporting the open internet since 1997.
We like hex stickers.

After two decades of a steady rhythm of bimonthly open calls on the first day of every even month of the year, NLnet will change deadlines to the third day of every odd month.
If you are interested to learn why - and how this relates to FOSDEM, summer, and Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions - you can read our longer announcement here: https://nlnet.nl/news/2026/20260803-phaseshift.html
The new sequence will commence on September 3.
Nick, Eddie, Jamie, and Adam of AMS-IX made it to the finish of the Nijmeegse Vierdaagse and received the traditional Gladiolus flower.
The team from the Amsterdam Internet Exchange turned this four day walking event into a fundraiser for an Open Internet For All. They chose NLnet to be the recipient of the proceeds.
We're very honored they picked us and we thank them and the donors. Here's picture of the finish, with the AMS-IX and NLnet logos happily together on the tailor-made T-shirt.
The second article in our series on digital autonomy looks into the open source software supply chain.

Today at 16.00 CEST we'll have another open office hour. If you have any questions about applying for funding you can ask them. Here is a link to the Matrix channel and an explanation how it works:

You can already start adding questions to the Etherpad.
Edwin & Nicholas from AMS-IX will be taking on the 4Daagse (Four Day Marches) walking 50km a day. They're hiking for a charitable goal: an open internet for all. And they picked us to donate the proceeds to!
The Amsterdam Internet Exchange plays a crucial role at the core of the internet as one of the largest hubs for internet traffic in the world. So it's a great honour to be picked by such an internet icon for their charity drive.

67 projects will receive NGI0 grants to support the great work they are doing to keep our internet fair, open, resilient and secure with us, the users, at the center. Together they are fixing the internet across the entire technology stack, from open hardware to end user applications. Each project is free/libre/open source meaning everyone can use, study, share and modify them. A true digital commons.
Come over to meet the projects!

As NLnet transitions from #NGI to the Open Internet Stack (OIS), we'll temporarily pause our bimonthly open calls, with the exception of NGI Taler & Fediversity.
In order to take stock of a decade of the Next Generation Internet initiative, we'll halt our open calls. After the summer the regular application process will re-open with 3 new programs under the new #OIS umbrella. Ongoing projects can continue their important work uninterrupted.
