Theoretical Ecology and Evolution Laboratory

Welcome!I am a postdoc in the group of Iain Couzin at Princeton University and I work on various aspects of Collective Animal Behavior such as schools of fish, flocks of birds or marching locusts. In particular, I am focusing on the evolutionary aspects of collective behavior. I did my PhD in Physics at The Ohio State University working with Prof. C Jayaprakash on theoretical ecology. In my thesis, I proposed early warning signals and predictive measures for abrupt and catastrophic changes in states of ecosystems (such as transition from clear to turbid water in lakes; desertification in semi-arid regions). This work won Volterra Award at the ESA 2008 conference (best student oral presentation in theory section). I had joined OSU in Fall 2003 after completing my undergraduate studies in Physics at IIT Kanpur, India. - Join Us!We are looking for highly motivated, hard working students with a fascination for biology. If you find our work in the broad areas of Theoretical Ecology and Evolution, Self-organization, and Mathematical modeling of ecological systems exciting, there are opportunities for working in the lab as a PhD student, or on specific short/long-term projects. OR if you have empirically motivated data/questions (related to aras of work carried out in the lab) that require mathematical modeling, I am happy to discuss if a short-term project can be defined based on them. Our work may involve analytical calculations based on various techniques of statistical physics and applied mathematics (e.g., diffusion theory, stochastic processes, ODEs, nonlinear dynamics, etc) and/or devising computational models (including GPU based parallel computing) or numerical simulations of PDEs. So I encourage people from Physics, Mathematics or Engineering background with a deep interest in ecology to apply. However, if you don’t have those background or skills, its not necessarily a problem but our aim will be that you will certainly acquire some mathematical/computational skills here!
