Celebrating. RAIN. MULTIPLE PROPER DAYS OF IT.

Reading. I have given up on Weathering (Ruth Allen), in that I had struggled through only a little of the first post-introduction chapter when it autoreturned to the library a second time, and by this point I'd taken several screenshots to send to people for yelling purposes. ("To put therapy in a replicable, familiar, closed box of a closed room, in a clinical environment, is to say an individual thing got broken and now must be shut away to get fixed ... Therapy has no echo in nature when you see it behind closed walls, sealed in to medicalised or clinical environments, disconnected from the messy edges of the encroaching world"!!! THE COCOON METAPHOR IS STARING YOU IN THE FACE.) It has had its second chance; I think alas it is not for me.

HOWEVER. I am back on my EatYourBooks indexing bullshit! And have thus read Jams with a Twist (Kylee Newton, National Trust), which I will be keeping, at least for now; and I am most of the way through Notes from the Jam Cupboard (Mary Tregellas), which I will ALSO be keeping, because in addition to the fine Brythonic surname she............. has a Mitteleuropäische family history of the form "her mother moved to Devon from Czechslovakia, For Love", followed by spending a fair bit of time in Austria as an adult, and I am finding her very soothing company. Not quite finished this one (I have yet to actually read the final chapter on breads), but aaaaalmost! Almost. I swear the next book will be one I am going to actually give back to the charity shop--

And meanwhile, in another part of the forest, I have also made a start (thank you the library) on Proto: How One Ancient Language Went Global (Laura Spinney). I have thus far greatly enjoyed the introduction and a good chunk of the first chapter (on Proto-Indo-European's own parent language); there are many excellent Language Facts and also many excellent facts that are not directly about language; I am Having A Good Time and Do Recommend.

Listening. We've wrangled a whole pile of potions for the upcoming last event of the year! We have therefore also listened to a bunch more Hidden Almanac! We're just edging into summer 2017. Georgina is being Threatened but has not yet Arrived...

Playing. More Color Bus Trip, and also Tukoni: Forest Keepers!!! Or at least our first run through; there are 9 Steam Achievements we have not yet Achieved so we will be doing at least one more in the relatively near future, and it is just as soothing and delightful as the prologue and does a really good job of incorporating but largely not repeating the material from the prologue. V v v happy about this.

Cooking. The veg box brought us multicoloured beetroot, so, a variant on the caramelised onion and butternut squash tart, with rings of sliced beetroot in Colours Various and also rosemary in the custard. Since I was making pastry I made a double batch and turned the other half into approximately apricot-pistachio squares, with some figs in addition to apricots; this time I did double the frangipane, or rather all of its ingredients except the sugar, and this was very satisfactory. Will attempt to remember to do again in future. (Hi, future Alex who is looking for notes on this topic!)

I have also made Fig Soup, by which I mean Approximately Fig Jam But I'm Working Myself Up To Boiling It Up Some More. Alas I do not think half sugar to the weight of fig is sufficient for my textural purposes so plausibly I will just... empty everything back into the pan and add... another kilo of sugar. (And then I desperately need to repeat the process with the rest of the figs...)

Eating. FIGS. Strawberries. More of my mother's beans. A has been making akuri. Generally it is a season of abundance and feasting that I am greatly enjoying.

Making & mending. Iiiiii need to actually tie off the ends for patch #1 and move on to patch #2.

Growing. DID I MENTION THE RAIN.

I have furthermore sown some kohlrabi and some fennel. We Shall See.

Anyone care to guess how old Gideon is?

Today we had a kids birthday party in our house for the first time since Covid. 10 of them, mostly 5-6 year-olds. Every previous time we held it somewhere else - a soft play, a climbing centre, a kids gym - somewhere where we could turn up and let the kids run riot for an hour, then give them food for 45 minutes before the staff ushered us out and hosed the place down for the next party.

But Gideon decided, about 6 months ago, that he really wanted a movie-watching party. In pyjamas. This was because a friend of Sophia's had dome that at a nearby multiplex, and he thought it was the coolest idea ever.

I stressed about this for a bit, looked up the exorbitant cost, stressed about that for a bit (particularly because you're booking a whole screen, so it's quite expensive when your child only has about 8 people they want to invite), and then happened to mention to Gideon that we'd have to watch whatever the cinema was able to find for us. And he said "Oh, I only want to watch the Mario Galaxy movie." - which made things very simple, because we have a living room with a 65" TV and space for 10 kids at home.

Frustratingly, I reminded him of all of this about three weeks ago, and got a response along the lines of "Why would I want that? I never said anything of the kind. You must have been imagining things father, what an imagination you have."

So I let everyone else know that some people could watch the movie in pyjamas, but it wasn't mandatory. And then we prepped for the party yesterday - including not having a big cake (because Gideon doesn't like cake) - substituting with a bright pink doughnut for him to have his candle in and Minecraft cup cakes for all of the other kids.

Everyone turned up just fine today, and they seem to have had a lovely time - there was half an hour of frenzied running and screaming around the house to start with, followed by 80% of them watching the first 50 minutes of the movie, and then they split up around the house in small groups, some of them watching the movie, some of them playing with toys, and some of them sharing the three Minecraft-capable tablets/accounts that we have to have 5 minutes each playing together. The adults switched rooms depending on which room the children were occupying, and I actually got to have conversations with some of them - a first for most of them, as I haven't really met Gideon's friends' parents much before.

Gideon noped out around the two-hour mark, retreating to his own tablet. Everyone else lasted another half an hour, and then parents spirited their kids home, Gideon and Sophia enjoyed opening all the presents up, and the family have dispersed to recover individually around the house.

Overall, it was less stressful than I worried, I haven't had to clear any cake off the ceiling, and the most damage was from one of the kids working out how to change the Minecraft world to Creative, and then the others taking the opportunity to totally overbuild the starting area with various high-level nonsense. So, overall, a pretty successful small-child birthday.

Just like the forecast was suggesting, it was raining quite heavily when I woke up, but by the time I was heading out for some parkrun tourism it had stopped. There was a bit of drizzle and a few drops of rain at the start, but otherwise dry with the occasional peek of the sun for parkrun itself. It did start raining lightly when I was heading back and rained quite heavily when I was showering and getting dressed and ready to go out. But once again, it eased up soon and a little rain on my way to The Box didn't bother me. With the forecast suggesting temperatures between 18 and 21 I didn't even bring a coat for this trip, so I was out in a t-shirt, although a lot of other people out seemed to have dug out their coats already.

I really liked the art exhibitions at The Box. Echoes of Us was particularly awesome. In the other displays, there was lots of really interesting stuff about the port and the dockyards. After The Box, I did some aimless wandering around in shops, and spent some time browsing in Waterstones. I thought I'd buy something but in the end I emerged with five novels. Not sure when I'll have time to actually read them. There were some more showers in the afternoon, but I managed to escape the worst.

I finished work at 4pm today and headed out towards the station soon after to catch a train. There had been a heavy rain shower earlier, but as it was dry when I left I walked. I didn't entirely escape the rain, as another shower caught me when I was nearly there, but it was OK. And I was well on time, with the train being a few minutes delayed as well.

With the unsettled forecast, the train passed through some showers further west. I hadn't really thought about the route trains take to Plymouth, so it took me by surprise how close to the rivers Exe and Teign the railway passes and how close the sea is at the stretch around Dawlish between the rivers—I'd only experienced it in pictures before.

Very dark clouds on approach, but it didn't rain when I walked from the station to my hotel.

Looks like there are more showers expected over the weekend so I'll probably end up wet many times before the weekend is over.

so instead have a pointer to the watchface I have settled on for my Garmin, because: rainbow.

(the main thing I wanted was a face that I didn't hate the look of that actually told me how many steps I have done so far today that didn't round to 1sf. that it lets me shoehorn in a bunch of other useful-to-me information is a bonus. and did I mention? rainbow.)

Finished since the last reading post
Outrageous!, which was really good at covering the creation of, the fight against, and the eventual demise of Section 28 in detail.

The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida. I didn't really know what to expect, and I don't know if I really got the whole seven moons in afterlife thing, but I kept reading because I wanted to read more about Maali and what had happened to him.

Before the Fire by Riley Bauer, a prequel to a romance novel series that basically introduced some of the characters who'll be turning up in the series.

Currently reading
Still reading The Theory That Would Not Die. Also reading Mies, jolla on naisen sydän by Jussi Lehtonen, which I came across when searching for candidates for a specific reading challenge item, and that intrigued me with its title. Started reading Embers of the Hands: Hidden Histories of the Viking Age by Eleanor Barraclough.

Reading next
No idea.

Encountered this weekend peering out of a cherry tomato container, one forelimb grasping the rim:

Last year's dental appointments with the root treatment work and crown messed up my pattern for check-up visits, but I finally had the reminder to book a check-up last month, and my appointment was today. I've not had any real issues, only a feeling that I have something wrong or a cavity or something somewhere on the same side as the crown. So I said that to the dentist when she asked how I'd been. When she examined my teeth, she found what she described as a small hole in the one above the crown. As I had a whole load of X-rays of the crown side last year, I don't think she would have taken new ones otherwise, but what it showed her was a big cavity rather than a small hole. She was very surprised when she compared the new X-ray to the end-of-the-crown-works X-ray. So I have a new appointment (for next week, which is quicker than I expected, but she asked for it to be soon).

Reading. I am not quite at the point of admitting that I'm giving up on Weathering (Ruth Allen) but I have also... not made a great deal more progress on it, and it will wing its way back to the library in approximately three days...

Cooking. I... have been resorting to quite a lot of Sad Pasta.

Eating. SO MANY BLACKBERRIES AND FIGS. Sadly very much not my preferred microspecies of blackberry, but still. Munched cheerfully on my way to and fro.

Exploring. Forty Hall!!! We visited the beaver enclosure!!! I did not personally see a beaver; I saw ripples from one passing, heard the slap of another's tail, observed many chewed trees, and also saw FOOTPRINTS and TAILPRINTS in the MUD. We got there in part via a section of the New River Path I pass on the way back from the gym and had been wanting to poke my nose down, which was also very satisfactory.

We also visited Anglesey Abbey today for lunch, and greatly enjoyed the dahlias (very early but extant!) and the rose garden and the hummingbird hawk-moth :)

Making & mending. I have Removed The Embroidery Hoop and now just need to actually tie off & tidy up patch #1 on trousers #1.

Growing. Tomatoes! Mostly! Though chillis continue and last I checked no more things at the allotment had died...

Observing. Creatures include: SEVERAL flavours of bat; Evidence Of Beaver; lots of deer (mostly or entirely muntjac?); foxes; rabbits; a bird of prey of some ilk (at the beaver enclosure); red kites (in Cambs); many other birds including a chiffchaff that was wheeking away to itself incessantly; hummingbird hawk-moth (poss. two separate); at least three kinds of dragonfly.

Roses and dahlias. Poppies inna field. MOON. Yes. Good.
