    Thunderstorms with severe wind gusts and isolated large hail will be possible this afternoon and evening from the central Plains into the lower Missouri Valley. Isolated severe gusts and hail will also be possible from the Northern Rockies into the central High Plains, and
    NOAA Storm Prediction Center Day 1 Categorical Outlook for Tuesday, August 18, 2026. A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) is centered over portions of Kansas and Missouri. A broad Marginal Risk (Level 1) extends from the northern Rockies and central Plains through the Midwest and Great Lakes. Another Marginal Risk covers portions of Mississippi and Alabama. General thunderstorms are possible across much of the central and northern U.S., Southwest, Southeast, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic.

    Extreme heat continues to impact the Southeast this week. People are advised to follow proper heat safety tips by limiting outdoor activity, staying hydrated, ensuring access to A/C or cooling centers, and checking on vulnerable friends, neighbors, and family members. For more
    Stay indoors during heat waves. Stay indoors in air conditioning whenever possible. If your home doesn't have AC, check if your area has a cooling center. Remain hydrated by drinking water and avoiding alcohol. Check on those most vulnerable to heat, including children and the elderly. If you must go outdoors, go early or late in the day, and dress in light-colored clothing.
