Exactly. The evidence that preindustrial life was grim is extensive enough to fill a book, which is why I wrote one.

Life today is far from perfect. But it's not the Middle Ages. We don’t work the farm all day to survive. We have washing machines, A.C., refrigerators, cars, iPhones, UberEats. We too often take it all for granted. My latest in @WSJFreeEx: wsj.com/opinion/free-e…

How exciting to see this in production! (And being created by machines that would have struck our preindustrial ancestors as literal magic). Coming soon to a bookstore near you:

The odd idea that parenthood is incompatible with intellectual work isn't uniquely modern. Rousseau abandoned each of his 5 children, explaining, "How could I achieve the tranquility of mind necessary for my work, my garret filled with domestic cares and the noise of children?"

Am I crazy or is an academic career relatively child-friendly? You are out of school most of the time the kids are? And you can add or drop a course depending on your family needs? I guess it depends on how much research you do. You have a professor husband so you'll know more

Worried about fertility? Vincent makes great points here. If you're interested in this approach, join me for an upcoming conversation with @AlexAdamsRPh and @annacflowers on childcare policy reform. We'll discuss how to cut red tape and expand options for families. Join us in

Two insanely cheap policies that would increase fertility: A) abolish strict car seat requirements (ref 1) B) deregulate childcare supply (ref 2)

The smartphone may be one of the most powerful matchmaking technologies ever built. Most couples now first connect online.
