How could the latest U.S. economic outlook affect P/C #insurance growth? Our latest Chart of the Week looks at GDP and the outlook for P/C underlying growth, a key driver of new business premium volume.
A chart about Real GDP Growth by quarter shows data Q1 2025 through Q1 2026, plus an advanced estimate for Q2 2026. Notably, GDP had been accelerating Q125-Q325, dipped down in Q4 25, shot up in Q126, and dropped back down again in Q2 26 advanced estimate to below Q3 2025. Real GDP growth slowed to 2.10% YoY in Q2 2026. GDP growth remains positive but does not continue the acceleration seen in Q1. Deceleration of growth in Q2 may be attributed to conditions such as the Iran conflict. Pre-conflict inflation was also already high enough to cause GDP to decelerate. The average GDP growth over the last four quarters is 2.28% YoY. The BEA releases three GDP estimates each quarter; advanced, second, and third. The next will be released Aug. 26.
