What?

Adds a "Generate title" button to the post Rename modal accessed from the Post sidebar's three-dots menu.

Why?

While title generation was already available when focusing the title field in the editor canvas, opening the "Rename" modal from the Post settings sidebar (via the three-dots menu) didn't offer any way to generate or regenerate the title. Adding the button directly into the modal makes the experience consistent and lets users quickly draft or revise titles while renaming.

Use of AI Tools

Testing Instructions

  1. Ensure the Title Generation experiment is enabled (under Settings > AI Experiments) and a supported AI provider is connected.
  2. Create or edit a post with enough content.
  3. Open the Post tab in the right sidebar.
  4. Click the three-dots menu icon next to the post title in the summary card and choose Rename.
  5. Verify that a Generate title button appears.
  6. Click Generate title and confirm:
    • The button shows a loading state while generating.
    • The input box above is populated with the generated title.
  7. Click Save and verify the post title updates in the editor canvas.

Huh, never knew that three dot menu even exists (also not sure why it does, but I'll hazard a guess its hopefully a new/coming soon thing in Gutenberg?) but in any case this all looks good. One tweak, if possible, is after the first title generation in that modal that the Generate title text should update to Regenerate title.

Hi @jeffpaul, I’ve updated the PR so that after the first title is generated in the modal, the “Generate title” text changes to “Regenerate title.” Could you please have a look when you get a chance?

Also, the failing test doesn’t seem to be related to the changes in this PR. I think they are caused by WordPress Core trunk adding show_in_abilities earlier today in changeset https://core.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/64311

I’d be happy to take a closer look on this.

Hi @jeffpaul, I opened #1165 to fix the unrelated Show_In_AbilitiesTest failures caused by core r64311. Once it merges, updating this branch from develop should turn those checks green.

Hi @dkotter, I’ve updated the PR to address your feedback:

  • Updated the selector to target only the rename post modal.
  • Updated the implementation to support translations across different languages.

  • Removed the unnecessary styles, as they’re already handled by the existing CSS.

Could you please have a look when you get a chance? Thanks again for the feedbacks!
