Summary

A passing integration job prints dozens of lines that are not failures. They make it hard to spot the line that matters. Each comes from the test setup, not from webpack:

Output Where it came from Change
V8: … Invalid asm.js (2 lines per TestCases suite) parsing/asm-js runs "use asm" functions that are invalid asm.js on purpose The test setup sets V8's --no-validate-asm, so V8 runs them as plain JavaScript and does not report them. The test still checks the source and the result
ExperimentalWarning: VM Modules … (once per worker), stripTypeScriptTypes … Features the test runner turns on deliberately The test setup drops these two warnings by name. Every other warning, including deprecations, still prints
Warning: Setting the NODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZED … lazy-compilation/https turned TLS verification off for its self-signed certificate The global setup adds that certificate through NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, so Node.js verifies it. The case only turns verification off under Bun and Deno
console.log [HMR] Reload all css mini-css-extract-plugin's HMR runtime css/mini-css-extract captures the log and asserts it, so the line becomes a check
console.log [HMR] Waiting for update signal … and 7 more hot/dev-server logs every step at info universal/dev-server-client sets the hot/log level to warning first
[webpack.cache.PackFileCacheStrategy] Caching failed for pack: ENOENT … rename (now and then) After a fatal build error the test templates never closed the compiler. Its filesystem cache still stored the pack once idle, about 5s later, racing the next compiler on the same cache directory ConfigTestCases and TestCases close the compiler before reporting the error

Closing the compiler surfaced a real crash: with bail, a resolve that finishes after compiler.close() threw in ResolverCachePlugin (Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'createSnapshot')), because shutdown clears its FileSystemInfo. It now returns the uncached result. A changeset is included.

What still prints, and why it is not part of this PR:

  • Force exiting Jest: … comes from forceExit: true in jest.config.js. Removing it risks a hung job.
  • A worker process has failed to exit gracefully comes from workerIdleMemoryLimit restarting a worker that still has an open handle. It needs its own investigation.
  • Yarn 1's own DEP0169 url.parse() warning on Node.js 24, and its install-time peer-dependency warnings.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

test, plus a small fix in ResolverCachePlugin

Did you add tests for your changes?

The *.basictest.js and *.test.js suites, plus TestCasesCachePack and TestCasesDevtoolSourceMap, run locally with none of the lines above. The only failures are cases that fail locally on main too (many-replacements, Cli colors, profiling-plugin). mini-css-extract now also asserts the reload log. The ResolverCachePlugin fix is covered by ConfigCacheTestCases errors/import-missing (bail: true), which crashes without it once the compiler is closed. yarn lint is clean.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

Claude Code sorted the job output by source, traced each line, and wrote the change. I reviewed it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed cached module resolution when a compiler closes during a resolve, including after a failed build.
  • Tests
    • Expanded checks for CSS hot-update reload notifications and HTTPS-based lazy compilation across supported runtimes.
    • Improved test handling of runtime warnings and unrelated log output.
    • Updated HTTPS test setup to trust certificates where supported while preserving compatibility with other runtimes.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Test setup and hot-case tests update runtime configuration and assertions. Resolver caching handles resolves when compiler file-system information is unavailable. Compilation tests close compilers before reporting errors.

Changes: Test runtime and hot-case updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure test runtime
test/harness/globalSetup.js, test/harness/setupTestFramework.js, test/hotCases/lazy-compilation/https/index.js
Global setup sets NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS before calling create(). Framework setup disables asm.js validation when supported and filters selected experimental warnings. The HTTPS test disables certificate verification only under Bun or Deno.
Update hot-case checks
test/hotCases/css/mini-css-extract/a.js, test/hotCases/universal/dev-server-client/*
The CSS test checks for reload output after a delay and restores console.log. The dev-server client test sets the hot logger level to warning.

Closed-compiler resolver and error handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Handle unavailable file-system information during resolves
lib/cache/ResolverCachePlugin.js, .changeset/060-resolver-cache-closed-compiler.md
The resolver skips snapshot creation and returns the resolve result when file-system information is unavailable. Cache entries trigger a real resolve in that case. The changeset records the behavior.
Close compilers before reporting errors
test/templates/ConfigTestCases.js, test/templates/TestCases.js
Compilation test paths close compilers before reporting run errors. A close error takes precedence over the original build error.

Generated code size

Comparing base (c2052d0) to head (692dfca). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 β€” β€” β€”
Changed, test edited 0 0 β€” β€” β€”
New 0 0 β€” β€” β€”
Deleted 0 0 β€” β€” β€”
Unchanged β€” 9057 β€” β€” β€”

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did β€” Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas β€” a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (βšͺ added) β€” and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2263 test(s), 9057 asset(s), 101 emitted nothing.

…tore in the background

A compiler left open after a fatal error still stored its filesystem
cache once idle, racing the next compiler on the same cache directory
("Caching failed for pack: ENOENT ... rename"). Closing it exposed a
crash in ResolverCachePlugin when a resolve finishes after close, which
now returns the uncached result.

Node prints the "(Use `node --trace-warnings ...`)" hint once, after the
first warning of a process. The VM Modules warning used to be that one;
with it filtered, the hint follows V8's `assert` deprecation instead and
was left behind as an infrastructure error (interop-amd on Node.js 18).
