…ended Now that the in-repo migration of `Tooltip` consumers from `@wordpress/components` to `@wordpress/ui` is complete (PRs #78411, #78466, #78470, #78691, #78692), this PR flips the recommendation: - `@wordpress/eslint-plugin` (`use-recommended-components`): - Adds `Tooltip` to the `@wordpress/ui` allow-list. - Adds a `Tooltip` entry to the `@wordpress/components` deny-list pointing to `Tooltip` from `@wordpress/ui`. - `@wordpress/components` Storybook story: flips `componentStatus.status` from `recommended` to `not-recommended` and adds a `notes` field pointing to `@wordpress/ui`. - `@wordpress/ui` Storybook story: flips `componentStatus.status` from `use-with-caution` to `recommended` and drops the previous compat caveat (resolved by #78441). - Removes the per-import `// eslint-disable-next-line @wordpress/use-recommended-components` directives that were added during the migration in PRs 1-3 (20 files across `block-editor`, `block-directory`, `editor`, `edit-post`, `edit-site`, and `dataviews`). Note: this PR is based on trunk and therefore does NOT yet remove the analogous directives added by PRs 4 and 5 (#78691, #78692). Once those merge, this PR will be rebased and the remaining directives removed in the same commit.

- Activate both the Media Editor Modal and Media Upload Modal experiments
- Add an image to a post or page
- Click on the crop icon in the block toolbar to open the media editor modal
- Go to the Details tab and take a look at the Date added field
- Hover over the date

Out of scope for the PR, but I believe this is not a robust pattern accessibility-wise, because not all keyboard users are going to be using screen readers 🤔 Not available on touch devices, too.

What do you suggest as a better alternative? truncating (same as the filename field)? or allowing it to break the line, always showing the full date time (without tooltip) ?

Maybe make them borderless readonly text inputs that expand on focus? I think it can either open a popover or expand inline, but either way needs a tab stop to do so.

Just to add a little extra context here, we intentionally removed the tab stop for the date (and for the filename field) as they were interfering with keyboard navigation, and the tab stop felt unexpected. This is where I made the change:
The pattern we're following is similar to how dates are displayed in Github on PRs where we're prioritising the simplified date (Edit: I was wrong on this point). It is a limitation that this in unreachable by keyboard, but in principle from this UI the assumption is that folks mostly won't need to access the exact time, as they're in an editing context. So, I typically wouldn't reach for it as a common pattern, but in this particular UI it felt like a better balance (at least to a couple of us, this is admittedly a subjective opinion 🙂)
Whereas when someone's using the media upload (browsing) modal, it's more important to be able to see the time, too.
In any case, happy to keep iterating on the media fields, but if we think this needs changing, let's open a separate issue or make sure it's captured in #73771 (if it's related to the editing modal) or #73085 (if it's for the upload/selection modal). (Opened an issue below in #78791)

It turns out at some point GitHub appears to have changed this and the date does receive a tab stop now. So I'm quite possibly wrong about all this! I'll open a separate issue 🙂

The old tooltip used to add a tabindex-0 to the datetime anchor, which was custom overriden with tabindex=-1. This doesn't happen anymore with the new tooltip

…es-ui (4/5) Migrates 5 consumer call sites in `@wordpress/fields`, `@wordpress/media-editor`, `@wordpress/media-fields`, and `@wordpress/global-styles-ui` from the legacy `Tooltip` exported by `@wordpress/components` to the compositional `Tooltip` exported by `@wordpress/ui` (built on top of base-ui under the hood): - fields/components/media-edit (icon-only media picker `Button`) - fields/fields/pattern-title (lock icon on non-editable patterns) - media-editor/components/media-form/sidebar-datetime-view (truncated `<time>` trigger; full datetime exposed on hover via the popup, with `aria-label` carrying the same string for AT) - media-fields/filename/view (truncated filename `<span>` trigger; full filename on hover for sighted users) - global-styles-ui/variations/variation (variation card; tooltip shows the variation title) The mechanical rewrite was produced by the jscodeshift codemod landed in PR 1 (#78411); import placement / ordering and the per-import `eslint-disable @wordpress/use-recommended-components` directive were finished by hand. `@wordpress/ui` was added to `@wordpress/media-fields` and `@wordpress/global-styles-ui` as a runtime dependency.
…ltip trigger tests The two tests asserted `tabindex="-1"` on the Tooltip trigger element (a `<time>` and a `<span>`). That was a leftover from the Ariakit-based Tooltip, whose `useFocusable` would otherwise auto-add `tabindex="0"` to non-natively-focusable elements. The new base-ui-based Tooltip in `@wordpress/ui` does not add a `tabindex` on its own, so the explicit `-1` override is no longer needed in source — and the matching test assertions no longer reflect anything meaningful about focus behavior. Remove the obsolete assertions (and the dedicated test cases that only existed to assert them); rename the short-filename test accordingly. The underlying elements remain non-focusable by default, so the actual tab-order behavior is unchanged.

The codemod was introduced in #78411 to assist the 5-PR migration of the `Tooltip` component from `@wordpress/components` to `@wordpress/ui` (#78411, #78466, #78470, #78691, #78692). With the migration complete, the codemod has no remaining utility. The `tools/codemods/` directory is removed entirely because no other codemods remained.
