What?

This PR shows the admin bar in the Post and Site Editor by default, hiding it ONLY when:

  • In Post Editor, when the Fullscreen mode and Distraction-free mode are BOTH turned on.
  • In Site Editor, when the Distraction-free mode is turned on (Fullscreen mode can't be disabled here).

Now that the admin bar is back which identifies the site context, this PR replaces the now-redundant top-left W/site icon with an explicit back button, resulting in a more obvious navigation control.

Why?

This is part of an effort to make navigation across wp-admin screens more consistent. See: #79036

How?

This essentially "graduates" that part of the feature from the following experiment, moving the logic out of the experiment gating.

I'm happy to support this. I think there will be some future followups with the document title field that we can look at separately, but not something that needs to block this.

In that sense, this generally has my support. However as this is a larger change, I think we ultimately need some green checks from them. Such as @mtias, @youknowriad.

This is not true, the command palette has always worked on site editor v2 (a recent regression is possible though)

@youknowriad I did git bisect and it seems it's a regression from #79196. I documented it here: #79390. It is unrelated to this PR and I don't feel confident in fixing it here :)

@annezazu thanks for testing!

It's all working well in terms of showing up in the right place, working as expected, adapting, etc.

Glad that you find it mostly works.

I noticed in the site editor, the alignment feels janky to me between the admin and the overall Design items. It's clear they weren't designed together 😆.

They most likely weren't! Haha. cc-ing @jasmussen, @lucasmendes-design, I believe they're working to make the visuals work better in Gutenberg (editor) pages.

I also noticed when changing around admin scheme, that some show a different shade in the admin bar compared to the default:

What do you folks think? Should we unify the back buttons in Site Editor and Post Editor to be left chevron (<)?

Yes, we should have a single back icon that behaves as it does today. No reason to have different icons.

I'd go with the back button. It's a common action, and I think it's conceptually right.
The other one is not wrong, but I wouldn't introduce another affordance just for this page.

@fcoveram @lucasmendes-design @jasmussen OK, now I think it makes sense. I've updated the PR so that both Site and Post Editors are using the same < left chevron as back button. Thanks for the input!

Doing a bit of automated testing seems like the back button functionality is consistent with what's expected. I'm going to keep looking into the PR

Sorry @scruffian after you rebased it seems I realized I forgot to push the last commit (e7e6ee7) 🤦 it's a small change to update the icon in site editor to be consistent with post editor as suggested (<), if you could re-test it would be great, but otherwise I've retested it multiple times and will be merging soon :)

The CSS spec disallows using unitless 0 values in calc functions like this:

Note: Because <number-token>s are always interpreted as <number>s or <integer>s, "unitless 0" <length>s aren’t supported in math functions. That is, width: calc(0 + 5px); is invalid, because it’s trying to add a <number> to a <length>, even though both width: 0; and width: 5px; are valid.

Strangely, it doesn't show as an error for me (crossed out) in Chrome DevTools when using var values as it does when using an explicit 0, but the effect is the same that the min-height computed value isn't set correctly.

For reference, Chrome visibly rejects arithmetic with the unitless zero verbatim:

In either case, the computed min-height is 0 rather than what I assume should be the value of 100vh:

This unitless zero "gotcha" came up recently in an unrelated discussion about our use of the Stylelint length-zero-no-unit linter, and I found my way here after searching for existing problems. Convenient timing to discover, at the very least 😅
