Battelle for Kids is the not-for-profit that developed the Portrait of a Graduate model with its EdLeader21® Network over more than a decade. On July 1, 2025, it joined forces with AASA, The School Superintendents Association. For districts already implementing a portrait, the framework, the design process, and much of the supporting staff carried over.

A Portrait of a Graduate rubric turns one attribute into something an observer can judge. North Carolina’s statewide rubrics show the working pattern: one named durable skill, three to four criteria inside it, and three performance levels running from approaching proficiency, to proficient, to exemplary.

A student portfolio is a purposeful, curated collection of student work assembled to demonstrate learning, growth, or achievement against defined criteria. Three properties separate a portfolio from a pile of work: the pieces are selected rather than accumulated, the selection is tied to criteria, and the student explains why each piece was chosen.

The New York State Portrait of a Graduate names six attributes every graduate should be able to demonstrate. This guide sets out what the Portrait contains, where it sits inside NY Inspires, the confirmed implementation timeline, what it does and does not change about diploma requirements today, and the four things a New York district can usefully do before the state guidance arrives.
