Starting early on linux is useful. Now Olivier Laprévote has too many ideas on Gimp.

As a kid I preferred @LibreOffice Draw, then around 14 I started using @inkscape & @Blender.
I still use all these, so I'll refer to them here, because just like GIMP they got a LOT of UI improvements in ~10 years, though in different directions.
