What is AIDE?
Addressing Unwanted Internet Traffic at Its Source

There is a constant buzz in the Internet— the noise caused by unwanted network traffic. This is a systemic risk to the Internet, carrying most of the attacks that threaten our everyday lives as Internet users, from phishing attacks to ransomware. That buzz also conceals more advanced forms of attack, those used against critical infrastructures, industrial secrets, and even democracies.
Gathering information since 2019, AIDE is a threat intelligence platform that collects data from a globally distributed network of honeypots to offer actionable insights into infected Internet infrastructure.
We see over 30 million hits a month, and we know that’s just a fraction of the overall issue.
AIDE is part of GCA’s Internet Integrity Program.
From Data to Action … AND BACK
Data
We have been continuously collecting data on unwanted IP address activity since 2019. This data provides deep insight into the volumes of unwanted traffic and enables precise tracking of emerging global threats.
Community
Originally an IoT security project, in 2023 AIDE opened its repository to a community of researchers that helped us understand its connection with the issue of unwanted Internet traffic. That community is expanding to incorporate non-research participants.
Action
Network operators can use AIDE to address and ultimately reduce the unwanted traffic originating from their networks. Our community approach focuses on self-regulation and norm-setting, relying on industry collaboration to improve the Internet.
Do Something. Measure It.™

The AIDE Community
From network operations to cybersecurity, from IoT to Internet measurement, from critical infrastructures to policies and regulations, the AIDE Community is growing to include:
- Network infrastructure operators, large or small
- Internet and data service providers
- IoT, IIoT, and critical infrastructures
- Universities and research centers
- CERTs, CSIRTs, law enforcement, and cyber responders
- Regulators and policy analysis organizations

Internet Pollution Index
One key outcome of AIDE is the Internet Pollution Index, which quantifies global network pollution by evaluating both the volume and severity of that traffic.
While this is just one aspect of what we can do with our broader AIDE platform, the Internet Pollution Index provides a precise, normalized metric that reflects the intensity of malicious activity emanating from each economy’s network operators, as measured by autonomous systems (ASes).
The Internet Pollution Index measures how “polluted” an economy’s network activity is by combining the frequency and severity of different types of events. In essence, the Index reflects not just the volume of activity but also its potential threat level. It also reflects network activity as seen from the autonomous systems in that economy and considers the number of distinct IP addresses involved in unwanted behavior.
This approach allows us to compare threat levels across economies on a level playing field, ensuring that nations with larger network spaces are not unfairly penalized.

What is ProxyPot?
ProxyPot is GCA’s advanced proprietary honeypot technology, designed to elevate your network security by capturing and analyzing potentially malicious traffic in real time.
Our global and growing deployment of ProxyPot sensors monitors attack traffic across multiple protocols, including FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, SSH, and Telnet. By analyzing patterns such as login attempts, download/upload requests, and command sequences, we can differentiate between benign scans and genuine threats.
Each day, we capture millions of hits, providing deep insights into the current volumes of unwanted traffic on the Internet and enabling precise tracking of emerging global threats. ProxyPot exclusively provides AIDE’s data feed since November 2024.
