When people are displaced, rebuilding a livelihood can be just as important as meeting immediate needs. Through our economic security programme in Russia, we support people affected by the international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, like Maksim, with vocational
After Maksim and his large family were displaced from a town near Donetsk because of the armed conflict, finding a way to earn a living became one of his biggest concerns. Once a railway specialist, Maksim decided to learn a new trade and undertook training as a plumber. Through our cash grant programme, Maksim was able to buy the tools and supplies he needed to start working independently.

Between 6 and 7 August 2026, our teams facilitated the transport of 15 people released by the Congolese authorities and their handover to the Congo River Alliance / March 23 Movement (Alliance du Fleuve Congo/Mouvement du 23 mars, AFC/M23). This operation took place under the Doha Mechanism that the parties signed in September 2025. The operation was carried out in coordination with the health authorities and in strict compliance with Ebola prevention measures, including the provision of a Uganda Red Cross ambulance to address any medical emergencies. Under the Doha Process, we are acting exclusively as a neutral intermediary in response to requests from the parties, in particular regarding the safe transport and handover of people released by them.

How would the world cope if a nuclear bomb was dropped? We wouldn’t. There are no plans, no capacity and no means to respond to the horrific consequences of nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons should never be used again.
Humanity cannot afford to endure the cost of nuclear weapons ever again.

In recent months, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has escalated. The uptick in attacks has led to an increasing number of casualties and injuries. Juan-Pedro Schaerer, head of delegation at @ICRC_ua, shares👇🏽
For millions of people in Ukraine, this year has been horrific. Entire communities live under constant threat, spending tense days and sleepless nights in shelters, across the country. Tuesday night was no exception, with at least 20 people reportedly killed and dozens injured. “I have been working in Ukraine for a year, and the recent spate of attacks is the worst I’ve seen. We are seeing people’s homes destroyed. We are seeing families losing loved ones and civilians carrying the enormous psychological burden of living under repeated attacks.” Juan Pedro Schaerer ICRC head of delegation in Ukraine Under international humanitarian law (IHL), parties to the conflict must take constant care to spare the civilian population from the impact of hostilities. Frequent attacks compound the strain on civilians and the infrastructure they rely on, deepening the humanitarian consequences of this armed conflict.
