wychwoodI've been feeling terribly low-energy this week, and suffering worse than usual from the post-annual-leave indignity of "what do you mean, I have to go to work every day??". However, I have done the batch-cooking to get me through the second half of September when I'm on campus every day, and mostly kept up with the basic chores, if not any of the bigger tasks I was intending to get on with. I am mostly-successfully dragging my reluctant carcase through life.
My computer had suddenly started ( misbehaving ). But that did at least fix the problem (and now I have plenty of spares if anyone else needs them!!).
And then my tragic Dick Francis drought was ended; I'd read all the ones I'd bought, and they only had the same two on sale for about six weeks, which is not usually what's been happening (it's mostly been a steady trickle), and then there weren't any on sale for a few days and I was getting very despairing... and then I checked on Sunday morning and 11!!!! new ones were on 99p sale, so I'm set for a while. They immediately went back off sale, but I don't care because I bought them within approx. fifteen seconds.

a) still dealing with the insomnia shit that's been going on since Aug 18th, where I'm not getting fully to sleep until anywhere from 4:30am-8am and not really staying asleep for very long
b) yesterday and today the high has been 100+ wtf
c) did I mention I get heat migraines
d) got driven back from an activity yesterday. aide parked, but the ramp didn't reach, so we closed up, reparked, put the ramp out, I got out, and
... the van refused to do anything else. The ramp, which had been sounding unenthusiastic, wouldn't go back in, and the van wouldn't turn OFF. Pushing the ignition button triggered a tick-tick-tick noise, the sound of an engine failing to turn over, and the lights flickered, but nothing changed.
Luckily I wasn't trapped inside, so I could wait for AAA (estimated wait 59min) in the air conditioning. Guy came eventually, tested the battery health, and it was 0%. (Very health, much charge, wow.) So now it has a new battery.
e) and today the water was shut off for hours. We'd gotten notice, but still, a bunch of chores today required water, and it just made me grumpy. -ier.
f) lately, anything I try to draw looks stupid af and I hate it

Yuletide nomination plans this year
Sep. 7th, 2026 05:31 pmestiroseI'm planning on nominating (and requesting!) 4 fandoms this year. (If we get 5 nomination slots again this year I'll be as usual helping nominate some version of The Tomorrow People as needed, but if not, I have all my fandoms covered.)
Here's what I'm thinking of nominating, and why:
剑兰女探社 | Excellent Women: I don't think anybody will be surprised I'm nominating this Chinese historical crime/mystery web drama. It was good! I'm planning on nominating Yang Moli, Yao Zhidi, Qiu Ya, and Wei Qing, with requests for slice of life and Moli/Zhidi shipfic (they wouldn't be my first medical examiner/police officer pairing!).
Meow Palace: Forbidden City: I've also been into this little idle game about the Forbidden City a lot. I'm not nominating any characters because I would genuinely love any of them (also it saves me from having to prove they exist). Maybe I'll get my goshdang Steam guide done in time for Yuletide so more people can get into it.
The Letter (Visual Novel): This horror visual novel about a web of people caught up in a ghost's clutches is several years old and gets requested on a semi-regular basis - or at least used to! I'm asking for Marianne McCollough - lady has issues, and there hasn't been any really good fic handling them, so I'm asking for some.
The Ghost Who Limped (aka The Limping Ghost) - R. Chetwynd-Hayes: Tiny obscure 1970s horror short story that I fell in love with this year with a twist ending and some awesome fic potential featuring Julia, a young woman fascinated with the ghost who haunts her home and is her only distraction from her horrid family.

Sep. 4th, 2026 01:58 pmlexinI took Geraint to the vet for his blood test today. The vet told me that he was perfectly well behaved, which is astonishing given how he treated Carys a few weeks ago. He was fine, too, with barking dogs and other cats. It’s a mystery.

176. At the Feet of the Sun and 178. The Hands of the Emperor, Victoria Goddard - Basically got to the end of these last month and immediately looped around again... third listen to the audiobook of THotE, and AtFotS was the ebook again. I don't have anything more to say than what I said last month, but I am still very much enjoying.
( 177. and 180. Petty Treasons - Victoria Goddard ) A very satisfying look back at Cliopher's introduction to his Radiancy.
179. In the Realms of Gold, Victoria Goddard - Ythsar short stories. These were fine? but not very Nine-Worlds-ish, except insofar as some of the characters turn up in Till Human Voices Wake Us.
( 182. Portrait of a Wide Seas Islander - Victoria Goddard ) I enjoyed getting a bit of Buru Tovo's POV here! A fun little piece.
( 185. Aurelius (to be called) Magnus - Victoria Goddard ) Felt a bit like a sketch of a section of a bigger story. Not bad, but not doing much.
But this month I did also read some other things! That are not by her! Actually I'd been reading most of them on and off for a while, but not getting very far - but here we are.
( 181. The Reluctant Swordsman - Dave Duncan ) I felt like this was trying to make a moral claim under the fantasy adventure, but it kept failing to hold any actual principles, and that was frustrating.
( 183. The Power and the Glory - Graham Greene ) This is well-written, but also just... relentlessly depressing.
( 184. Office of the Lost - J Scott Coatsworth and Kim Fielding ) Some entertaining moments, but in general pretty mediocre.
( 186. City of Bones - Martha Wells ) Not bad, but certainly nothing special.
( 187. Just Gerry - Christine Chaundler ) Definitely a lower-tier classic school story, but I enjoyed the couple of hours I spent on it.
( 188. Death in the Andamans - MM Kaye ) These are generally competent adventures, and I enjoyed this.
( 189. The Legends of the Jews vol 3 - Louis Ginzberg ) Increasingly irritating, but I am determined to finish.
( 190. The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene ) I suspect this would be more enjoyable for readers with a physics background, but for me it's mostly just a case of smile-and-nod and hope I never actually need to understand anything about strings.
( 191. Unseen Academicals - Terry Pratchett ) Definitely a diminishing Pratchett, but even here there are still moments of excellence.
( 192. The Apollo Murders - Chris Hadfield ) ultimately not really my jam.
( 193. Under Orders - Dick Francis ) Another fun one.
( 194. The Dawn of a Tomorrow - Frances Hodgson Burnett ) Charming as described, but also terribly short.
