Cal Poly Simulation Laboratory

Who We Are:

Most engineering design solutions start with a mathematical/physical model of the system. The process of using the model to develop numerical results for analysis is known as SIMULATION. The systems engineering concept of developing a high-fidelity model in parallel with the development of the physical system is known as creating a DIGITAL TWIN.

The Cal Poly Simulation Laboratory is a group of students who work on projects involving modeling, simulation, and creation of digital twins for aerospace systems. We pursue three primary activities to build knowledge and skills in modeling, simulation, and digital twins:

  1. Design, build and test spacecraft attitude determine and control systems with hardware and software simulations.
  2. Develop skills in software modeling and simulation and apply those skills to aerospace systems. We develop skills in several areas of modeling and simulation techniques ranging from numerical, Machine Learning, Monte Carlo, Biomimetic, and Agent based simulations using a variety of coding tools and languages.
  3. We collaborate with others to develop position papers, blogs, and social media posts on the peaceful, sustainable, and socially just use of space and space-based technologies.

What We Do:

Major Project ↗

Each year we work on a “major project”. Sometimes these projects are part of NASA competition.

This year we are focused on designing, modeling, and simulating the Spacecraft Attitude Control Simulator, a vertical lander employing thrust vector control

PolySim Tag Program ↗

The PolySim Tag program is designed to guide members in their modeling and simulation journey and learn the required skills. Each time you complete a tag level, you are recognized with a “remove before flight” tag you can wear with pride.

Position Papers ↗

As a founding principle, we stand for the peaceful, sustainable, and socially just use of space and space-based technologies. In this pursuit, we write and present position papers at conferences, meetings, and open forums, when possible
