About Us
San Diego Documenters is an inewsource program that is part of a national network of organizations seeking to harness the power of community to gather information from local governments.
We train and pay community members to take notes at government meetings and we publish them. We have established our presence in the South Bay and the city of San Diego and are quickly growing to other parts of the San Diego region.
Mission
The San Diego Documenters is creating community-powered news that improves the lives of San Diegans. We accomplish this through our four pillars:
- Cultivation: We’re regaining the trust of our communities by instilling in them a sense of ownership in the news that describes them and their needs. Our news partners care deeply about listening to community members, involving them in the news they produce, and elevating their voices.
- Collaboration: We work together. News better represents us when we all participate. We develop partnerships with news organizations, educational institutions, community organizations and individual community members who want to engage with their local government.
- Innovation: We are reimagining what a news ecosystem can look like, starting with the gathering of information and revolutionizing its distribution. Our priority is delivering valuable information to people and not competing over who breaks the story first.
- Education: We recruit professional journalists and community leaders to share their skills and knowledge.
