Book Review: The Summer Place by Jennifer Weiner

The Summer Place by Jennifer Weiner book cover and review
I haven't read many Weiner novels, but I really enjoyed The Summer Place.

When I see a title like The Summer Place and a cover like this one, I usually think "sappy romance at the beach". And that's not necessarily a bad thing, but that isn't what this book is.

Sarah is one of the main characters. She has a stepdaughter who has just announced she's getting married. So the wedding and the planning are a big part of the story. Sarah's husband, Eli, is acting very weird. They've pretty much had a perfect marriage and have two little boys as well as the stepdaughter. But Eli has shut down. Sarah's mom is hosting the wedding at her beach house, and she's got several secrets. Eli's brother has had somewhat of a tragic past, and he has secrets.  The fiance's mom has secrets. Sarah has secrets, and she's so distraught about the state of her marriage, that she creates even more secrets to keep. And the house is a character, which is sort of cute, but not really necessary.

I'm not sure if I've covered it all, but there are a lot of secrets in The Summer Place. And it's really good when most of them are revealed. I think this is the third book in a row that I've read that features each chapter narrated by a different character. I didn't plan it this way, and they were good books, but I'm hoping for a different format for the next one!

If you are a Weiner fan, you'll want to pick up The Summer Place. Or if you want a summer read that's not just about people hooking up on the beach, this is it.

Audiobook Review: The Guest List by Lucy Foley

The Guest List by Lucy Foley, book cover and review
Once all the introductions were over, The Guest List got really interesting and kept me guessing until the end.

The celebrity wedding is on a remote island off the coast of Ireland and it is a stormy night, the lights go out, and when they come back on a young waitress is screaming about something bloody outside. There are bogs that you can sink into and cliffs to fall off. And it's dark and very windy.

The atmosphere is perfect. Then we flashback and get introduced to all the characters as they arrive on the island when the weather is beautiful the day before the wedding. It takes a long time to get back to the "now" during the wedding. I tell myself that the book slogged during this part, and it did, but maybe the detailed introductions of each of the main characters (the bride, the groom, the wedding planner, the plus-one, the bridesmaid, and the best man) were necessary. But once the book added back the "now" perspective, things got a lot more interesting.

We don't know who ends up dead. And we don't know who killed that person. But as the story unfolds and secrets are revealed, we realize that a lot of people could want this person dead. I was guessing until the end, not that it mattered. This victim was pretty evil.

You will enjoy how the story is revealed. And the atmosphere is perhaps another character, as it is so well described you will feel the wind and rain on your face.

The audiobook is full-cast, which I normally don't like. But in this case, it worked. If you enjoy atmospheric, locked-room mysteries, I recommend The Guest List.

Book Review: The Gown by Jennifer Robson

The Gown by Jennifer Robson, book cover and review
I love the Netflix series, The Crown, and am anxiously awaiting the next season, so The Gown was right up my alley!

The Gown is the story of two women who were the main embroiderers of Queen Elizabeth II's wedding gown. In 1947, London is still suffering the effects of World War II, so having a royal wedding to look forward to was a welcome diversion. We get the backgrounds of Ann and Miriam, two of our main characters, and how they ended up being embroiderers for the renowned fashion house of Norman Hartnell. Miriam, in particular, has a heart-wrenching story about being Jewish during the war.

Our third main character, Heather, is in 2016, and her grandmother (one of our embroiderers) has just passed away. Heather has never heard any stories from her grandmother about her life in 1940s London. But her Grandmother leaves her a box with embroidery samples and a picture that begins Heather's quest to discover her grandmother's secrets.

Those secrets involve stories about the creation of the gown (fascinating) and the royal wedding as well as stories of life during that period of time. There are romances, friendships, secrets, and other dramas that easily held my interest.

I'm totally wrapped up in the lives of England's royals, so The Gown was everything I hoped for. If you are interested in this time period, and especially if you are any kind of seamstress, you shouldn't miss The Gown.

The Other Side of Life -- Wedding and New House!

Image

I'm using these posts to occasionally describe other things I enjoy (besides books.) I used to post these projects on my other blog, but I posted so seldom that I decided to include them here. Feel free to skip this one, if you are strictly in it for the books.

My son got married in May, and I haven't posted any pictures yet, so here's a few. It was a beautiful wedding at the farm that my husband's family owns.

And, my son is also building a house (really condos). He and a co-worker come home from their constructions jobs and work on it in the evenings and on weekends. It has been a slow process, but yesterday was truss day! It really looks like a house now!

So that's the excitement in my world. Thanks for sharing a minute with me.

A Wedding!

My son is getting married this Saturday!

Image

Image

Aren't they cute? Well, you can imagine I'm busy this week, so this blog will probably be a bit quiet. Especially next week, since I tend to write posts about a week in advance. I'll do my best to keep up with my Feedly, but commenting may suffer too.

Next week is BEA, and I'm supposed to be doing the Armchair BEA, so we'll just have to see how it goes. Hopefully I'll post some wedding pictures next week too. They are getting married outside, so we are praying for good weather. So far, the forecast looks promising.

Book Review: Always the Baker, Never the Bride, by Sandra D. Bricker

Image
Always the Baker, Never the Bride will make you hungry for sweet treats, as well as warm your heart with its sensitive romance.

Emma Rae is a master baker. She's won awards for her wedding cakes. Too bad she's diabetic and can't really eat much of what she creates. Jackson Drake, with the help of his three southern sisters, has taken on a project to honor his dead wife. He's bought a hotel and is turning it into a wedding hotel -- offering any service a bride could possibly want. Emma Rae can't resist Jackson's offer to come work for him as his pastry chef.

Emma Rae's friend and sous chef, the emo Fiona, adds some spark to the mix of characters which are somewhat cliche. The romance is very slow, and builds in a cute and natural way. The idea of the wedding hotel was my favorite part -- I loved all the ideas they came up with for the setting, food, and atmosphere. There are recipes and baking tips between the chapters that were interesting but not important to the story.

I didn't, however, realize Always the Baker, Never the Bride was considered Christian fiction. It's not that I have a problem with that, but I usually don't read anything labeled Christian fiction -- and I felt blindsided.  It wasn't heavy -- but there was a lot of emphasis on praying, and relying on God that some might not enjoy. And, I just don't like that in my books. I AM a Christian, so that's not what it's about. I just don't like reading about being Christian. And, I'd like to know that before I read a book.

So, bottom line -- loved the setting and food, liked the romance, could do without the praying.

Something Different - Wedding Crafts

I have decided to quit posting on my other blog, The Housework Isn't Getting Done. I haven't posted there much at all, and I've decide that I'd like to post about those "other" things that I do besides reading right here on my book blog.

Image

I'll only be doing this once in a while, for now I think it will be on some Sundays when I usually don't post anything. Feel free to skip these if you aren't interested.

Some of you may remember that my daughter got married in May, and I'd like to show you a few of those decorations we made for the wedding. Her colors were green and navy blue.

Image
We made these favor boxes. My sister has one of those fancy cutting machines, so she cut all the boxes and flowers, then we glued the boxes, and added the flowers and the "thank you" tag. We had a candy buffet, so everyone could fill their box and take them home. We were very happy with the way they turned out.

Image
Image
We had two different centerpieces, with sliced limes floating in water. We took pictures of the happy couple for the table numbers.

Image
My son made the boxes, and I grew grass to put golf tees with paper golf balls. These were used for table numbers.

We thought it was all beautiful, and it was just what she wanted. It was a lot of work, and a lot of fun.

That's me with my daughter. I don't have a really good picture of the bride with the groom yet, so I'll have to post that later.
