currently the bigtime blogging challenge

Hey all! Time to kick things off with the BigTime Blogging Challenge 2016. This month, I'll be writing every day to celebrate my blog's 3 year anniversary! I will also provide a link-up so anyone who wants to write can do so with me!

Image

For the first day, we're going to do Farley's Currently post. I'm so bummed she quit hosting these, they were one of my favorite posts. I won't have a cute little image for you to use, but please share what you're currently: listening, loving, thinking, wanting, needing, and hoping to get out of this writing challenge!

Here goes!

Listening to Holy & Broken Arrows

So I love FGL's Holy - check out that video here:

And, on my NashVegas road trip, Anita got me hooked on Broken Arrows by Avicci:

Both awesome songs I've been listening to on repeat!

Loving Arbonne
So I started shopping with Arbonne about five months ago now? Their product line runs from nutrition to makeup to bath and body and I love it all because of their ingredient policy - everything is pure, safe, and beneficial. The last two months I've started a biz with them and I'm loving what it's brought into my life, most importantly a group of strong, positive role models and new friends!
Image
Love this Manifesto!
Thinking about blessings
Seriously, I am so thankful for my life! My apartment with the breeze blowing through, days off in the summer, quick trips to see new places, money to support a healthy lifestyle, a career (and side-gig) I adore, friends and family and loved ones...seriously, couldn't be better. So so thankful!

Image

Wanting Polaroid ZIP Instant Photoprinter
I found out about this on Erin Condren's website and I've been wanting this little printer since May - I just have so many expenses right now I can't get it just yet... but I didn't forget and I will have it for sure! Can't wait to snap a pic, print it out and stick it in a notebook on the go, amazing, right?

Image

Needing to get better sleep
I think it's got to be Nash Vegas that threw me off. For three days we were up till like 2am and now I'm having such a hard time getting good sleep. Not sure what's going on there, but it's getting pretty annoying! Oh, and I already had a scary classroom management dream.... say it ain't so!

Hoping to make new blogging friends!
I'm so glad to be hosting this writing for all of us - I hope lots of friends, some who have written with me in the past and others who are new, join in the writing fun. There's so much to be gained from a month of writing - have you ever done Two Writing Teachers' Slice of Life in March? Amazing, and this challenge was inspired by them!

Okay friends, it's time! Write your posts, link up the permalink with me here! Don't forget to leave some love in the form of comments to other bloggers :-) See you back tomorrow!

last currently

It's the last Currently...I get it, Farley's been hosting a long time - longer than I've been writing, but I am bummed. I look forward to the first of the month for this linky! But all good things must come to an end..that's what they say, right? So here it is, the last Currently!

Image

Listening to...
Two new songs (well, maybe they're not new) but Hide Away by Daya and Hold my Hand by Jess Glynne. Check them out!

Loving My new Bitmoji
I know, I'm so behind the times, but I just made my bitmoji and I love running text conversations with my girlfriends in all bitmoji responses!
Image

Thinking life's too short
Seriously, we need to take time to appreciate the amazing things in our lives. Of course there are always thing we want, those things just out of our grasp, but we have awesome careers (hello...teaching kids?) great families and friends, warm homes. Appreciate, friends!

Like, look at these kids...Love them!

Image

Image

Wanting a house
In what life will I be able to afford a house in Chicago proper? I'd like one!

Needing sunshine
It seems like it's been raining for days. I am in desperate need of Vitamin D. Hope the sun makes an appearance in Chicago this week!

Truth
I should be writing lesson plans, but I'd always choose a Currently post over just about anything, so here I am :-)

So that's all for me. I guess I'll see you all around the teacherblogosphere? Maybe on Twitter? I hope so!

Happy Sunday!

I'm late, but it's go time! Thanks to Farley for hosting this partay!

Listening to Taylor Swift

'Cause, baby, I could build a castle
Out of all the bricks they threw at me
And every day is like a battle
But every night with us is like a dream

I'm in love with Taylor's new song. Looked for the Vevo to no avail, but check it out on iTunes!

Please take my hand and
Please take me dancing and
please leave me stranded
It's so romantic

Loving Spring Break
I've been on spring break this past week, had parents in town, was confirmed Catholic at an amazing church, have had time to just chill and relax, and will be going to Lake Geneva this weekend (went already) to the spa. The breaks we get were meant for teachers - we need to get away and have time to recoup so we can be our best selves at work. I am so thankful for this much-needed time to myself!

Thinking about my friends at Two Writing Teachers
Have you been to their blog? Well, in March, there's a writing challenge and everyone writes every day for the whole month. It was my third year participating, and this year, even more students and teachers joined from my school. Although I didn't write every day, I did half the time, and also welcomes a fresh new crop of teachers and students to the challenge. Then, yesterday as we ended, Kathleen Sokolowski wrote an awesome poem about her experience, and I've taken a stanza to share with you:

Here's to us.
Who teach from a place
of authenticity,
Who don't require of students
what we won't try ourselves.
Who know writing isn't
really about rubrics and grades
but communicating and creating,
Who know writing is life-work.
Here's to us who've
walked the walk
each day
in March.

So so good. I know I write about a lot of nonsense here, but it's because I love writing so much, and want to walk the walk I expect my students to. (And also, the blogs I love the most are the blogs where I get to know the writer, personally!)

Wanting to go to the Outer Banks this summer
When I moved to Chicago in '09, I would occasionally see stickers on the backs of cars with "OBX" on them. I had no idea what this was. Fast forward to now, and I have a few friends there right now (last week) and another friend who goes every summer. I want to go there, where those little beach fences stand, and tall grasses grow beside them and blow in the wind, and waves crash on the shore. I actually want to go there with my writing friends and spend a week tanning and writing. So, who's in?

Image
Yes, this.

Needing summer weather
Dear Chicago,
I'm over your moodiness. Snow then sun then cold and hail. Enough already. Spring, it's time for you to make your grand entrance!
Love, Michelle

Whatever: I'm moderating a Twitter Chat!
Are you guys on Twitter? Well, if you are, save the date: Tuesday, April 19th @ 8pm CST. Together with my AP, Jean Suchy, we will be moderating a discussion on Content Area Literacy! We tweet under the #D100chat, check out the feed and we have a twitter chat tonight, too. It's all about ELL strategies!

Image

That's it! Much love, friends!

currently march

Hi all! It's March first and time to catch up with what's going on currently! Thanks to Farley for hosting; this is one of my favorite linkys each month. Love finding new bloggers and making new friends!

Image

Listening to...
Current playlist includes quite the mix:
Record Year by Eric Church,
Love Yourself by the Biebs, and
Heartbeat by Carrie Underwood

I'll leave you with some happy, romantic stuff from Carrie; this song is so so good!

Loving...Slice of Life
Are you familiar with the blog over at Two Writing Teachers? Well, every March they host the Slice of Life Story CHallenge, and hundreds of teachers from around the globe commit to 31 days of writing in March. It is awesome!

This year, 8 teachers on our staff are blogging, plus all of our third and fifth graders, and a first grade class! It's so cool to hear everyone talking about writing and sharing stories.

And the best thing about it? Writing for 31 days will teach you far more than any curriculum ever could!

Thinking...about how anyone could still be voting for trump

I don't understand it, how so many people are voting for him? I wonder what the rest of the world must be thinking about us? Also, if you haven't seen this video from John Oliver, you must check it out. Heads up - this is by HBO, so it's explicit!

Wanting...New Pillows
How long do people usually keep their pillows? I swear, mine are at least 10 years old. That's kind of gross, right? Anyways, I'm waiting for a Kohl's coupon, and a 30% off one at that, to go buy them!
Needing...Spring to arrive
There have been a few days that I've heard birds chirping when I woke up, but I'm excited for that to happen more and more, and open the windows up and get ready for warm weather and sunsets after 7pm...and eventually, summer vacation :-)

Polling Place

Yep, we're a polling place. It's a non-attendance day for the kids, but teachers are here for a PD day. It's kinda annoying to have a Monday at work, then a PD day, then three more days, but whatever. I'm just happy the kids aren't here with all the strangers in the building. And...if you haven't voted yet, I hope you're #feelintheBern!

That's it for me! Be sure to follow along with my blog, I'll be writing every day in March! :-)Image

currently february

Friends, it's February! I'm so happy to say sianara to January. The weather was sucky, I got in a car accident, and some other things that were not my fave. But February is here and it's time to start fresh and look forward!

Thanks to Farley for bringing us all together again! Hop over there and check out her new blog design, so so cute! Here's what's up on my end:
Image

Listening to....the news - It's Iowa Caucus day!
This isn't too much, is it?

Image

Seriously I'm totally #FeelinTheBern over here. I think he really needs to get Iowa tonight if he's got any chance at taking the whole thing, so hopefully all those people are out doing the Caucus. Also: idk exactly what caucusing is....anyone? Buellar?

Loving...my job, Literacy Coaching!
Few things: 1. Annie, another coach in our district, tagged a few of us in an article on Twitter and it was really good. It talks about how coaching happens one conversation at a time. Then, 2. today, I had a conversation like that and it was awesome. It makes me so happy to feel like I can help make a difference!

Thinking about...The Chicago Marathon...?
I recently started going to Old St. Pat's Church downtown Chicago and I just love it. In addition to feeling so uplifted at Mass, and learning so much through RCIA, they have all these awesome programs, including one to train runners for the marathon. I think yes! Any marathon runners out there? Thoughts?

Wanting... New shoes!
So I got a gift card for Tieks for Christmas (thanks sister!) and still haven't bought them because of some unforeseen expenses, but soon, very soon. I will be getting myself some ballet pink Tieks and I also want some new running shoes. I'm going to give Asics a try this time, after a lifetime of running Nike Free. Anyone run in Ascis? Do you love them?

Needing...umm...nothing?
Life is good. The days are getting longer, it hasn't been terribly cold, and I'm not digging my car out of snow! And speaking of my car...

Swooning...New Car!
So my car accident - made a crappy car a hopeless mess, so I took a payout on the damages (accident not my fault!), sold my car to CarMax and then my amazing parents chipped in a little bit of money to their poor teacher daughter (ok, I'm not poor, but I'm not sitting on a huge savings, either!) Anyways, now mine is a beautiful, smells-like-new-car, all electronic and high-tech, shiny, sleek, 2016 Civic:

Image

I've driven all of the 53 miles this car has gone (except 6) and I just love it. Feeling very grateful for family that continues to support their grown daughter. I only hope one day I can do the same half as good as they have! Love you, family!

So that's where I'm at right now. What's new with you? Be sure to check out Farley's blog and link your Currently up, too!Image

currently 2016

Happy New Year friends! It's crazy...it's 2016! The years just keep flying by! Personally speaking, I'm so glad to be done with 2015, and I send it off with a whole-hearted #byefelicia! :-) I'm so thankful for a new year!

Image

Listening to...The Rose Parade
It's a lazy morning over here, nothing really going on. Just hanging out, watching the rose parade. Haven't had my first coffee yet, so perhaps that's in order!

Loving yoga, just like old times
My sweet, awesome, hilarious friend took me to yoga last night and I just love it. It really is therapy, for the spirit, emotions, and a great workout. And, last night it was a fun glow flow, with all these glow sticks, and balloons and blinking lights...and great music. My favorite thing our teacher said:

Thinking about writing
I really love to write, here on BigTime Literacy, in my many notebooks I have around my place and school, and this year, I'm adding something new. I'm going to be writing about my One Little Word in a notebook, and with prompts from Ali Edwards, the girl who started OLW! Last year, I kind of lost sight of my word, so I'm excited to devote more time to it this year.

Wanting another week of break
I mean, yes, just yes.

Needing to put Christmas away
Time to clean up. I normally love everything about the holidays, but this year was hard; I knew it would be. So I'm ready to put it all away, and move forward....

One Little Word: Forward
Personal life: No more looking back, just visualizing the future I hope to manifest for myself.

Professional life: Looking forward to what opportunities may be out there for me; I'm really missing the classroom and my own students. Also, excited to apply for a PD through the National Writing Project, and potentially get selected for this 12 day course in New York City on the Holocaust and Social Justice studies (!!!)

Writing Life: I'm coming up on my 3 year anniversary here on BigTime Literacy, and I can't wait. I'm excited for new writing adventures that are on my horizon!

Health and Wellness: I want to move my health forward... not be insane about a number on a scale, but just help myself to feel well, mentally, spiritually, and physically. Eat foods that will make me feel great, and indulge when there are things to celebrate!

Image

I wish everyone an awesome year in 2016! I'm hoping to go to the TpT conference this year....maybe I'll see you there! :-)

Cheers!

I'm late to the party friends, but it was because I was having an excellent birthday this last weekend. I turned the big 3-5 and celebrated with friends on a trolley in our costumes! More to come on that later though!

So I'm back for Currently, the fun first-of-the-month party sponsored by Farley. Check out her link-up and write with us if you want to!

Without further ado...

Image

Listening to Hello by Adele
Most downloaded song in one week - just broke records, I'm guessing on iTunes. It's so good. Can't wait for the rest of the album!

Loving the birthday party!
Halloween costumes plus 35 friends on a trolley, a scenic view of the skyline and fun music - such a win!

Check out some costumes:

And lots more...here are all of us over by Adler Planetarium for a group shot:

What amazing memories to carry with me from this birthday!

One more, the skyline for realsies:

Seriously, love this view!

Thinking about my sister's visit!
My sister is coming on Thursday and bringing my new little nephew Jack and I can't wait! We're going to have some time to hang out, go see the city, visit family, and I get to cuddle with that cute baby boy! Stay tuned here, or on IG, for pics of the baby!

Wanting to have it all together
I wish I had it all together - at work, in my personal life - everywhere. Let's dish about work first... Like, I wish I have read all the new Calkins curriculums so I could coach them better (or at least read the orientations to each unit). I wish I had a binder per grade level with all my important docs - like those orientations to the units, and a calendar where I keep a curriculum map of what we've done, and I keep reflections about teaching and learning as we talk about student work. I'm kinda doing all of this, but I need a system in place to get it all organized. So that's on my radar.

As far as my personal life, I mean, do we ever have it all together? Being that it's November, and a time for thinking about gratitude, I guess I'll just go with that...
  • Thankful for amazing friends and family who are always there for me, via facetime or a phone call or on my doorstep
  • Thankful that I really put 100% into everything I do, and I have no regrets when things don't work out
  • Thankful for my apartment that I love so much in a city that is mostly awesome.
  • Thankful that I stay positive almost always, even when things are crappy, because that's life, sometimes it just is.
  • Thankful for the Peppermint Mocha that is sitting right next to me in a red cup, and time to sit in a Starbucks and write. And thankful for writing!
Anyways, life is never perfect, but it's mostly amazing, so just gotta focus on that, right?

Needing a new couch
I've had my couch since like 2006 maybe? It's super feathery and I love it but it's out of shape and just needs to be replaced. I've been thinking about it for awhile now, but just need to make it happen.

Yummy
Pretty much all of it - the whole traditional thanksgiving dinner, especially when I'm making it. A few years ago I went to Phoenix and a few friends and I made the whole dinner ourselves, and it was so awesome. I can't wait for Thanksgiving!

That's all for me this month! I hope you have a fabulous November and I hope to be back with some literacy content - for sure over the break when I have time to slow down!

xxoo,

Hello friends! How are you? I hope well...and glad we can get together for another currently party! Thanks, as always, to Farley for hosting, and here's what's up with me this month!

Listening to Gonna by Blake
Ohh Blake, love you! Favorite line in this song... "Gonna put a little rock steady on your hand!" Love Love LOVE! :-) Listen and enjoy some country, friends!

Loving the Illinois Reading Council Conference!
I'm just home from Peoria and the IRC with lots of awesome people from my district and amazing teachers to learn from. To be quite honest, Dave Burgess (Teach Like a Pirate) stole the show for me yesterday, with his awesome session on creativity. Then today, my heart was full after listening to Penny Kittle. More to come on that later, though!

Thinking about my 1:1 kiddo!
I have one 30 minute intervention with one little kiddo and I love it. She's making so many gains - I can see them! The work we're doing with sight words is transferring to her guided writing. Then in her guided writing, she's remembering to capitalize the first letter of the sentence and correct capitals inside the sentence without prompting. She's becoming more fluent with the letter sounds and names and is using blends to increase her fluency as well. This is why I LOVE specific interventions with anecdotal notes as a measure - a standardized test could never tell us what I can tell my colleagues about my little one. I see so much growth and I'm so happy and proud, and I love our system for RtI - it's really working well this year!

Wanting one of my football teams to win a game
The Bears are 0 - 3 and ASU lost really bad to SC last Saturday. not cool. Can we please get a Sun Devil or Chicago Bears win sometime soon? Please?!

Image
for realsies

Needing to go for a run
I've had such a hectic week and now I'm out of town, haven't been running, but have been thinking about it. I guess this is what happens when you become disciplined about something, right? Anyways, feet to pavement tomorrow morning!

Boo-tiful
Beautiful things? Listening and watching Dave Burgess yesterday reminded me how beautiful it is when teachers are amped up and loving their jobs. I can only imagine how awesome his kids feel to be in his class, and I totally want to be that teacher! One thing he said really rang true for me...

Image

So that's all for me! Be on the lookout for some posts about the IRC in the coming days!

If you're landing here for the first time, make sure you check out the blog hop that is going on!

Have a great October! We'll meet again on my birthday! :-)Image

Happy September! Back for another month to see what was new with all my blogging friends. Last month at this time I was writing from a beach, in Florida, on vacation with my boyfriend. This month I'm back at home, back at work, and single. So much can change in a quick month, right? Don't worry, I'm too angry to be sad, and the writing is actually quite therapeutic.

So let's get on with it. Thanks to Farley for hosting us again!

Image

Listening to Old Dominion
You know, that song, Break Up with Him? Well, funny story. On vacation last month, the ex and I thought it was totally funny that the song started, "Hey girl, what'sup?" and so we listened to it a lot while we were together. Now I'm enjoying it for a completely different reason. #notreallyfunny

Loving Our new school year
We've been doing tons at our school to make things fun and positive. We met this week to plan out socials for the whole year, figure out appreciations we can do for our staff, and we even have a super fun idea for Halloween, but it's TOP SECRET! You're going to love it though when you see it! It' so important to build a positive school culture, and we're kicking butt at it this year!

Image
image

Thinking about the weather
91 degrees on September 1st is too hot. I had to turn on my AC today. But, this is so much better than 91 below zero, so I will zip it!

Wanting Tieks
I still want them. I think about them all the time, and I've asked friends on my Instagram if they are worth it. Everyone says yes. I need to pay some bills down, but then they will be mine! Only need to decide on the color. I really want red flats, but I think I should get a color that will go with more stuff.... like a ballet pink? Thoughts?

Needing to go to Ikea
Anyone else want to go this weekend? I need a few things to complete our new classroom. This year, the reading team actually got a classroom space (moved out of the closet we used to reside in) and we are having so much fun putting it together. It's still not ready for the reveal, because we're waiting on a few things that were ordered. But, back to the point about Ikea - I think maybe I'll go this weekend, any takers?

Three Goals
1. Empower Staff
2. Read more books
3. Commit to be fit

That is all. Make sure you share your Currently with Farley over at her blog!Image

HI friends!
I'm on vacation and was trying to unplug, but no such luck. I've been better though, just taking some morning time with my online world and then living in books and notebooks most of the rest of the day! So, without waiting anymore, let's get on with Currently!

Image

Listening to the waves
We're in Ormond Beach, Florida, on the Atlantic coast. Our condo doesn't directly face the ocean, we're off to the side, but from my chair right now I can see the waves and hear them crashing. Light breeze blowing in, me, the beach, and my blog. I'm in love!

Image

Loving bff bracelets
Alex and Ani just started making ASU charm bracelets and so I facebooked it to my friends here in Chicago, and then a few weeks later, Laurie ordered them for all three of us. I can't wait to get them and I'm so excited to have a new tradition - I'm sure we'll wear them to all the game watching parties at Cubby Bear!
Image

Thinking about Block Scheduling
I've been reading Atwell's third edition of In the Middle to get prepared to teach a session in my district, "Organizing for ELA on a Block Schedule." My mind is racing with all kinds of ideas to share with our middle school teachers, but I need to keep reading this week while I'm lounging by the water. I'll be sure to share this PD (like all the others I do) on a future blog post and archive it in the PD tab above. Stay tuned!

Wanting sunny days
Yesterday here was nice-ish - It was sunnyish during the day but then rained and rained and rained. I'm hoping for really sunny all day today and staying in my swim suit for each moment!

Needing
Can't think of anything at the moment, and I'll take it!

B2S RAK

Okay so I'm not going to tell you about it till I can show you, but I'm planning on making a bulletin board in our staff lounge. I saw it in a yoga studio I was trying out and loved it! So, probalby by next month you'll get to see! I know you're going to love it, trust me! :-)

That's all for me right now, off to take in the waves a little bit closer. Make sure you check out all the Currently posts over on Farley's page!

currently June!

Wow, it's really June. As in summer is coming! As in three more days of work (only two more with kiddos). As in sleeping in until 8 and the Today Show with coffee! As in time to reflect, rejuvenate, and recharge! As in vacations! So excited!

Thanks to Farley who always takes time to host her party so everyone knows what is up Currently!

Listening to... Chelsea Dagger!

Yep! Blackhawks defeated Anaheim on Saturday night so Chicago is so excited for another championship series! Check out what I mean about excitement from boyfriend and friend:

!!!!!!!

Loving... summer vacay is almost here!
We would have been out by now, but had this problem in February:

Image

I don't even care that we have three more days - I'm so happy that it's getting to be summer again. Well, wait. It was 44 and rainy all weekend - Cubs game cancelled, but anyways, I am hoping that there's some sunshine and warm weather in our future.

Image

Either way, I'm sleeping in every day very soon!

Thinking....about all my new #shelfies!
I'm nerdy, right? But I am really excited to read a bunch of great books this summer. I already have Radical Reflections by Mem Fox and Reading Workshop 2.0 by Frank Searfini, but I just ordered:

Image

Image

Image

And Serravallo's book is on the way, too:

Image

What I know about myself as a reader: I need to schedule time to read. I always want to read, but if I don't plan it out, I get distracted and will choose writing (here, mostly) over everything - writing over exercising, over watching TV, over cleaning ....everything. I want to make sure I set time aside to read (and exercise!) this summer so I get to do all the things I want to!

Oh, forgot to mention that I will be rereading Daring Greatly again and holding a book study for it in July! It is part of my BigTime Blogging Challenge of writing every day, but each Thursday in July we'll be writing about the book! Check out the details of the writing challenge here and please join me for as much writing as you'd like to do!
Image

What are you going to be reading? Should I throw a few more titles in the amazon cart?

Wanting.... a few of my friends to get on Twitter.
You hear me Jennie? and Katie? It's time. You're going to love it! You can thank me later :-)

Image

Needing.... a clean, packed up, organized office
I'm talking about the one at work, the one where things just keep being dropped off, more stuff to organize, more stuff to put away. It's cool, but it's a lot of work, and I have just a little time left. and I have only one box.

Image
Totally need an alpaca! :-)

Summer Lovin
So many things I'm excited about:

  1. My niece is coming for a whole week to stay with me!
  2. Going to California with girlfriends and then the boyfriend is coming too!
  3. Participating in Illinois Writing Project with my writing buddy!
  4. Going to Florida for a week and I'll get to see my mom and stepdad and relax on the beach!
  5. Lots of time to do whatever I want to do!

So that's all for June! Thanks for stopping by and check out my End of the Year Reflection Linky and my BigTime Blogging Challenge!
