Extra Sauce With Your Fries.

As always, there were a few tracks put aside for the show which we just couldn't fit into the final 58mins. We never like to keep tracks til the next fortnight as there's always so many to choose from anyway, so here's a selection of those that we had to miss.

Some warm and jazzy autumnal Soul from Canadian singer Claire Mortifee, produced by Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical aka Potatohead People. This track also features on their excellent 3rd EP out on Jellyfish Recordings, whose other guests include rappers Moka Only and Frank Nitt (Frank N Dank).

Some more soulful vibes from Canada. This track by Vlooper is taken from his recent 'Snowloops' album and also features his wife Modlee. You can grab the album for any price you feel is right below.

Actually now listening back to this Breezy Lovejoy album, it's even more surprising that we didn't play anything from it. Again we're very much still on the Neo-Soul vibe but with that extra kick that keeps it fresh and exciting. You can also pick up the LA based singer / rapper / drummer's first album for free here.

We were possibly judging the whole Chief Navaho album by some of it's dodgier singing excursions so unfairly overlooked this one until it was too late. The rest of the album has some other golden moments but some of the sung vocals do come off rather sketchy at times.

Despite the fact it didn't quite initially grab us we did keep on getting pulled back to this one. It's a track whose charm grows with each listen too.

As well as these gems, FACT Magazine have also posted a free download for this little gem which we did actually play on the show.

If you missed the show entirely, then make sure you go back and check it out.

We Love Unicorns!

Image
From Chrome Kids and the oddball MC who taught us 'How To Be Cool' last year, Th' Mole's 'I Love Unicorns' is an unlikely rap song withheart, guaranteed to make anyone crack at least a small smile.

Setting himself apart from the slew of 'hipster hop' Th' Mole is a truly unique individual, as he proves irrevocably with the b-side track 'Shocky Guy Go' which features Asian strings, symphonic arrangements and lyrics rapped in an imaginary language.

In addition to remixes of the title track by Robot Koch (Kitty Yo/K7), The Flying Skulls (1320/Daly City), and up-and-coming producer Frietboer, there is also a printable Th' Mole paper doll included in the download!

Pick up a copy from Bandcamp now.

Th' Mole: I Love Unicorns maxi-single - 01. I Love Unicorns (Robot Koch Remix) by magicalbass

Even Radio 1 music supremo and Bestival overlord had to agree that "This is immense". We believe the Robot Koch mix is due to be his tune of the day today, however he is knee deep in Bestival line up announcements (The Cure, Primal Scream, Brian Wilson, Magnetic Man, Crystal Castles, DJ Shadow, Grandmaster Flash, Norman Jay, LFO, Omar Souleyman, A Trak, Katy B, 65 Days Of Static and Pantha Du Prince so far... blimey!) so may have slipped by for today.

Kraddy - Into the Labyrinth (Video)

Kraddy - Into the Labyrinth (Official) from Kraddy on Vimeo.

Make sure you pick up a copy of Kraddy's new EP Labyrinth, we're currently on the search to find a set of speakers big enough to do it true justice. Maybe we need to head over to Low End Theory for the launch party tomorrow for the full experience, spare plane tickets anyone?

West Coast Vs West Country

Image
Following up from his killer Ludacris v. SebastiAn Mash up, Glitch hop pioneer Kraddy hits us with another meeting of musical monsters. This time it’s a royal rumble between the Oakland crew, Luniz' classic I Got 5 On It and the purple tinted track City Hopper from Bristol's Dubstep don Joker. Grab a copy below.

LUNIZ vs JOKER [KRADDY NEXT LEVEL MASH-UP] by KRADDY

Some may remember that before City Hopper dropped as an instrumental, the beat was used for the Central Spillz track How We Roll. Unfortunately we’ve lost our copy and the link’s expired but you can listen to it here and hopefully if the fellas are reading they can drop another download link in the comments below.

Let's Do The Timestetch

Image
By now, those of you with a penchant for gnarly basslines and swaggering bruiser beats may well have picked themselves up a copy of the new Timestretch EP from the West Coast master of such styles Bassnectar, which was due out this week but dropped early as it escaped from the Beatport cage like the Kracken in Clash Of The Titans. If you haven't got a copy then read no further, run over to here now and grab it (along with special DJ tools, bonus tracks, and bundle packs) before coming back and enjoying this delicious bootleg of the title track which features vocals from Nelly Furtado's Turn Out The Lights

Freedom Is A Road Seldom Travelled By The Robots

Image
It's been a while since Free The Robots dropped his debut EP onto the world and in that time his contemporaries on the West Coast scene such as Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing have firmly wedged themselves into our collective psyche. Now finally we have a full length episode of the FTR show and it's certainly been worth the wait.

The name of Chris Alfaro's project is most definitely apt. This is the kind of freedom that Johnny 5 tasted and all those other androids out there have been dreaming of since. The re-education of the robots takes on a history lesson of their portrayal in human culture with tracks like Sci-fidelity, a straight up 50s B Movie robo-invasion over a killer beat which we can’t help but picture Doom tearing up… ripe for the mash up we’d say. The rest takes in everything from 60s Eastern influenced psychadelia to modern crunk, all translated for the knowledge hungry robot's out there, whilst tracks like Voices takes the education further approaching the emotional side of things and teaching them about the relationships between pain and beauty.

Finally as the freestyle nature of The Eye (a collaboration with Mars Volta's Ikey Owens on keys) really highlights the computer as instrument and with the education complete you can almost feel the life force surging through their circuits. The Robots have most definitely been freed.

Ctrl Alt Delete drops via Alpha Pup Records on March 30th.

Get Ready To (Crunk) Rock

Image
First up is a titan clash between Mochipet and Kraddy as the Glitch Mobster takes on a track from the Glitch Godzilla's Master P on Atari album. He's not the only one either, Master P On Atari Transformed Vol. 1 which is out now on Daly City Records also features the likes of Restiform Bodies, S.P.E.C.T.R.E. and Sub Swara.

Mochipet fans should also check the new video for Robo Crunk Juice.

Keeping It Steady

Image
New single here from the Madlib produced album In Search Of Stoney Jackson from LA 'super-group' Strong Arm Steady (now minus Xzibit) due out on Stones Thrown in the near future. The track features the ever soulful Phonte from Little Brother who compliments the depth of the track perfectly. There's also a non-album track Follow Me, a gritty little blunted ride through their mind state. Both have been cleaned up to broadcast friendly status for all you radio peeps.

- CanDo

Image
A Scribble Jam winner and Low End Theory host, NoCanDo is no stranger to those with any kind of connection to the current West Coast scene, so it's perhaps a little surprising then that his debut full length is only just upon us. Dropping courtesy of Daddy Kev's Alpha Pup label and with a producer line up that includes the likes of Nosaj Thing, Daedelus, Free the Robots and Thavius Beck, we were obviously excited about this album before it even hit the player. It doesn't dissapoint either, one of the most well rounded Hip-hop albums for a long time Nocando switches up styles, flows and deliveries in a way that truly showcases his long term love of the music without having his nostalgia chip jammed in any particular heyday. From crunked up club bangers to more instrospective head nodders, this is serious business which never takes itself too seriously.

The West Coast Hip-hop scene has always been a diverse and divided bag of noise. From classic Gangsta Rap to the Good Life Cafe attendees back in the late 80s and 90s, or Bay Area Hyphy and the kind of artists who grace the upper echelons of Low End Theory. Although this album is perhaps a little too grown up to truly cross over and a little too contemporary for the traditionalists, it joins the dots for the current scenes well and in many ways brings everything else up to date. Grab it!

Jimmy The Lock is out on Alpha Pup from January 26th but we have a copy of the new single for you here.

Moving Off Square One

Image
There have a been a few artists by the name of Square 1 over the years. There was a great Soca band from Barbados who had the beautiful Alison Hinds as their lead singer and my old group once played in Stuttgart with a Munich based Hip-hop crew of the same name who had a few underground hits once upon a while ago. So it is probably a wise move that a similarly monikered producer from the West Coast should revert to what we assume is his legal name of Stephan Jacobs, perhaps after 8 years in the game it was time to step up to square 2. This should certainly be no problem at all if the phat selection of Glitch hop and Dubstep remixes and originals we've been sent from those fine fellas over at Muti Music is anything to go by, infact there's no reason he can't go the whole way round the board, which actually if we're fair rather than relying on cheap word association gimmicks he's already gone some way around, along with Ruff Hauser and their Kether collaborations.

Which Way West

As the rain kicks in here at Chrome Mansions let's look to sunnier climates and head over to the West Coast, USA for a sonic holiday.

Image
Flying Skulls hit us up with two of their new releases, which comprise of remixes from their Take Flight remix by artists such as Mochipet, Ribotto and their own BBQ Chicken Dub alter egos. Abducted Vol 1 is out on Addictech now or on iTunes as of tomorrow. Abducted Vol 2 is out as an exclusive release on Daly City Records and includes this remix of Skeleton Talk. With it's machine gun drum patterns, some of the squelchiest bass alive and twisted G funk synths, it's kinda like listening to classic Dr Dre in a K hole.

Download: Skeleton Talk (BBQ Chicken Dub Remix) / alt link

Image
Meanest Man Contest just dropped us this superbly spaced out remix of their track Day Off Theme from the excellent new Leaders compilation on Subtitle's Briefcase Rockers label (also featuring Lazer Sword, Small Is Beautiful, Debruit, Crunc Telsa and a whole heap more). On this version their pal Calamalka from Vancouver gives it a beautifully liquid sounding Rolf Harris wobble.

Download: Meanest Man Contest - Day Off Theme (Calamalka Remix) / alt link

Image
Not many Emcees can touch Gift Of Gab for straight up free firing flow and liquid lyricism. A master of his art that at times is mind blowing and at others has you waving bananas in the air in a funk fuelled frenzy, so of course we await the new album eagerly. If you're also a fan of the gifted one then you can pre-order his sophomore solo album here. If not then maybe this track can convince you, a latin tinted funk nodder with a lovely dubbed out breakdown at the end.

Download: Gift Of Gab - El Gifto Magnifico / alt link

Muti Music just uploaded this sinister low fi creeper from the Glitch Mob and PantYRaid don Ooah onto their Soundcloud account. We're not certain but it's probably a teaser for the next Acid Crunk compilation from An-ten-nae due out on Muti in November.

The label also have a compilation out now that they've put together for the Symbiosis Gathering festival that is most definitely worth copping (out on Addictech at the moment and full release in the next couple of weeks). It features the original of the Skeleton Talk track posted above and some of our other favourites from the likes of An-ten-nae and Eskmo.

The LA Dubstep Renaissance?

Image
As this is mixed by Plastician and features artists such as Benga, Caspa, Starkey and Virus Syndicate, not entirely sure what constitutes it as an LA Dubstep album but maybe we're nit-picking and infact it's just an overview of what's big in LA, and make no mistake Dubstep is big in LA. If you needed any more convincing look at the list of West Coast Hip-hop big hitters who are jumping on board. Ras Kass, Xzibit and Big Snoop Dogg himself. We're not entirely sure who the Cashmere Agency are, and in which way they are presenting Mr. Grustle & Tha Russian but it does present a new era for Dubstep in the US.

CKFR # 5 DJ 0.000001 & Mochipet - Eazy E On Atari

Image
Eazy E was the first to admit that he wasn’t exactly a role model. Yet that didn’t stop millions of teenagers kids all across the world looking up to the alter-ego of business brain Eric Wright and agreeing that this was indeed one gangsta muthafucka worthy of respect. Many hardcore Hip-hoppers have since cursed the day that guns, bitches and bling became one of the cornerstones of the movement, but secretly they were never directing their ill feelings towards originators such as Eazy E. Without him Ice Cube would probably still be ripping off the Beastie Boys, Dr Dre might still be wearing make-up and both Yella and MC Ren would have disappeared without trace (okay so that happened anyway but you get the drift). He carried an arsenal of guns bigger than he was, had money coming out of every orifice and pussy falling out of his pockets but still managed to donate millions to charities, and regularly took orphans on field trips. Sadly, in a cruel twist of irony, his passion for ‘pussy’ caught up with him and in 1995 he died of AIDS, leaving a bullet sized hole in the Hip-hop world, and spreading fear across anyone in LA who had neglected to use a condom recently.

Now thanks to a rare 92 accapella and the kind of electronic re-engineering that only happens to cyborgs in sci-fi movies, ‘the lunatic psycho muthafucka’ is back from the grave, on a mission of sex, death, violence and revenge, all good family entertainment as usual. Mixes come in a glitched up and bouncy style from Eprom, a juggernaut driving DJ 0.000001 mix for those long lonely highways and a huge Mochipet mash up of the two that comes stomping in like an electronic Hip-hop slaughter fest. Think Ed 209 Versus Robocop or one of the missing evil Decepticons that turns into a crunked up Monster Truck with speakers in its rims.

"That's very fucking rude!" Rob Da Bank (BBC Radio 1)

This EP is the latest in our Fre-Release series that started with a previous DJ 0.000001 track and has since included Stagga, zwolf and Th’ Mole. Look out for plenty more lined up over the rest of the year.

Boom It In Ya Jeep

Image
6Blocc from LA got his name from a Masta Ace track apparently ("the bass I create is heard from six blocks") so it seems only right he Dubstep´s up the classic Jeep Ass Niguh ... although of course the bass Ace was pumping out was heard from 50 Blocks away by then. If only he´d pumped this it might even have been further again.

Also repping LA hard is Ruckazoid, whose album Diamond Studded Mothaship should be dropping later in the year. Gonna be massive if this Boyz remix is anything to go by.

Keep Bwompin'

Image
Representing them big, bass heavy Bwomp Beats over on the West Coast, Ev-1 hit us up with his latest Boomstep Mixtape, that kind of speaks for itself really. A well crafted mix of tracks stretching across current to classic, underground to unheard from some of our favourites such as An-ten-nae, Bassnectar, Akira Kiteshi, Mochipet, Rusko, Raffertie, Jayou, EPROM, DZ and Stagga (full tracklisting and download here).

West Coast V East Coast

No we haven't decided to revive a pointless rivalry that ends up with some people shot and others very rich... okay maybe a little bit, but really it's simply a tenuous link because we happen to have some great stuff to post from New York and some other fantastic stuff from the California area.

Image
First up, dope LA based beats and bass lovin' blog I Am A Laser has schooled us on a producer / DJ from the city called R/D. Coming out of the same scene as Glitch Mob, the sound on this Mini Mix created from tracks off his new Cricket EP is a touch on the lighter side than the Mob's full force club attacks and is rather more similar to what we've heard so far from the PANTyRAID project, no bad thing at all.

You can catch an interview with R/D over at the I Am A Laser blog

Plus Daly City affiliate Preshish Moments has released a Free EP of twisted style glitchy Turbo Crunk that shows a little something of his Breakcore past. Grab the EP here.

Regular readers will already be aware of South Bronx rapper June, well it's his month so it's only right we post his new track featuring fellow BX spitters AB3 & Kool and some extremely minimalist production from Ron Browz.

He's also dropped a new Mixtape hosted by the one and only Cipha Sounds.

Finally, relative newcomers to the game 13/13 out of Brooklyn have hit us up with an ecletic range of remixes, all of which have had our heads nodding here in Chrome Mansions. Our favourite is probably this re-edit of a classic that doesn't stray far enough from the original to be sacrilegeous but has an extra touch of dirty bass synths to keep it fresh enough to bring back into our sets again.

(YSI) Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 - The Message (13/31 Edit) / alt link

We also have something of a guilty pleasure soft spot for both Lionel and Saved by the Bell, so had to get this in some place too.

We're Playing Master P On Atari

Image
The Daly City don of digitally crunked up dirt and devastation, Mochipet, is back with a new album that's more raw to the core than anything that's come before.

Where as Microphonepet was largely about big beats for the guests to ride on and to be honest Bunnies & Muffins pretty much snuck past us, Master P On Atari is all about gargantuan beats that are so in your face it would be impossible to ignore. They've literally taken over and they're pissed off, ready to trample buildings and fling trucks about. The sound is probably best described by taking random words from the track titles, such as: Hyphy; Turbo; Sumo; Robo; Crunk; Bass; Ghetto; Godzilla; and straight up Full Frontal Face Melt.

Master P On Atari is out July 4th on Daly City. Here's a track from the album...

Plus if like us you need to play catch up slightly, here's a track from the Bunnies & Muffins album, featuring the delightfully dapper genius of Daedelus.
