consult-prompt UI

As discussed in the wishlist, consult-prompt would offer a list of all prompts, including eshell, comint, and possibly more. I'll try to implement this within the next week or so, but before I start, I want to clarify what the UI should be like.

Helm has separate commands for 1) selecting a prompt from all (say) comint buffers and 2) selecting a prompt from only the current comint buffer. Do we want separate commands here as well?

Consult also has [space-bar-]narrowing functionality so you can easily narrow to comints only etc.

Numerous major modes are derived from comint, so filtering by comint alone would lead to shell-mode buffers getting mixed in with inf-ruby and inferior-python buffers, which isn't always what I would want.

An alternative is to allow space-bar-filtering by major mode. If multiple major modes start with the same letter, we'd have to make a defcustom for the user to choose major mode gets that letter.

We'd additionally need something like

I was thinking that the name of the major mode along with the buffer name and the first line of the prompt contents would be enough, and that the current directory would be added as some metadata for Marginalia or something (I don't yet understand the internals of that package).

What do you mean by "the type of the prompt"?

Here's helm-eshell-prompts-all in action, used to navigate between all prompts across all eshell buffers. I envisioned consult-prompts to work in a similar manner, but that it would include comint-derived modes as well, classified by major mode as we discussed above. It's possible we're not on the same page as to what we want consult-prompt to do.

I think we have something different in mind. I envisioned consult-prompts to be able to navigate between multiple prompts from all shell-like buffers, including between all prompts (many of which will be non-empty) in a particular buffer. I think what you describe sounds more like https://github.com/emacs-helm/helm-selector (which I find more useful, but to which I would not assign the name consult-prompts). Do I have this right?

Ah, now I get it. You want something which should show a list of prompts in the current buffer not jumping across buffers. Why is this even useful? Why is this needed in contrast to consult-line? Or is the idea that you can still jump across buffers since you include all prompts of all shell buffers?

Yes, I had something like this helm-selector in mind which allows me to jump between shells and possible create a new one if none of a certain type exists. If you find helm-selector more useful, why do you not propose that one first?

Yes, but consult-imenu already provides something more specific since it hooks into the existing imenu infrastructure. The consult-prompt you envision is easily emulated (at least in a single buffer) by consult-line with an initial input regexp. There is still the functionality for multiple buffers, but for this we might want to consider some kind of generalized consult-line instead which queries more buffers. consult-prompt would then just be a special case of this consult-line-multibuffer with an initial regexp input.

This sounds like a very good idea too! I would actually prefer that. Note #135. So we should at first clean up the buffer sources. Right now this is an ad-hoc mess. It works but it should be cleaned up if we want to add more sources. But when I initially started this I was happy with only files and buffers.

1. If we plan to have consult-line-multibuffer, should we still implement this consult-prompt?
2. I was inclined not to use regexps since the default regexp won't always be right for shell-mode if the user is using a flashy zsh theme or something. But the prompt regexp can still be customized in that case, so I don't feel strongly either way. If regexps are not used, comint-next-prompt seems to check input fields to determine where a prompt lies.

I usually prefer the more general solution if it is possible and still works reasonably well for the special cases. But there is also consult-error, so I think we can also have consult-prompt. How are the corresponding helm commands called? I saw helm-comint. Is there also the more general helm-prompt?

One more thought - right now most commands are single buffer. Also consult-error, which is unlike counsel-compilation-error I think. This avoids the complications of selecting the relevant set of buffers. But if we add a multi buffer consult-prompt the behavior of the commands should somehow be aligned. Then there is consult-project-imenu. Maybe all consult-prompt, consult-error and consult-imenu should then be made available in two variants. A local one and one that works across buffers, with a reasonable behavior to select the relevant buffers.

consult-prompt(-multibuffer) would be something that I expect to use only sometimes, to be able to navigate to the output corresponding to some input I happen to remember. In both the single- and multi-buffer cases, this command obviates the need to type in the prompt regexp to guarantee that I match against a prompt.

I do not expect to use consult-line-multibuffer myself, since consult-multi-occur does its job better: setting list-matching-lines-default-context-lines to some nonzero integer gives the results surrounding context in the occur buffer, whereas showing multi-line context in consult-line is not, as far as I know, something that Selectrum or Icomplete are very good at doing right now.

How are the corresponding helm commands called? I saw helm-comint. Is there also the more general helm-prompt?

helm-eshell-prompts offers as candidates the prompts (such as /home/alice >> ) within the current Eshell buffer.

helm-eshell-prompts-all offers all prompts from all Eshell buffers, and can be called from any buffer.

helm-comint-prompts-all can only be called from a comint buffer, which doesn't make sense to me. Otherwise it is similar to helm-eshell-prompts-all.
