• What is Toyota Racing Development?
    • Toyota Racing Development (TRD) is Toyota’s in-house motorsports division. It’s responsible for designing, engineering, and supporting Toyota’s racing efforts across different disciplines, as well as developing performance parts for production vehicles
  • What is the GR Cup?
    • The GR Cup is Toyota Gazoo Racing’s single-make, spec-series championship in the U.S. designed to celebrate car culture and deliver close, driver-centric racing. Every competitor races in identically prepared Toyota GR86 cars, ensuring the competition is decided by driver skill, team execution, and strategy—not equipment.
  • GR Cup Datasets Available to Participants
    • Dataset Overview
    • Hackathon participants will dive into real racing data from the Toyota GR Cup Series. Each race file contains detailed insights across performance, results, and conditions, including:
      • Lap Timing Data
      • Start, end, and total lap times for every car.
      • Best laps and average times across top performances.
      • Race Results
      • Official and provisional results.
      • Positions, total laps, elapsed race time, and time gaps to competitors.
      • Class-based standings (e.g., Amateur class).
      • Track & Performance Analysis
      • Section-by-section lap breakdowns.
      • Telemetry data including speed, gear selection, throttle, and brake pressures.
Definition of the GR Cup datasets

Here is a description for each of the files in VIR race 1. Other races should have similarly named files where you can expect similar data from.

  • vir_lap_time_R1.csv: The total time elapsed for a given lap and car during the race session
  • vir_lap_end_R1.csv: The time at which the car finished the lap
  • vir_lap_start_R1.csv: The time at which the car started the lap
  • 05_Results by Class GR Cup Race 1 Official_Anonymized.CSV

The final results of the race:

POS: Position of the car at the end of the race

LAPS: Total laps for the car

ELAPSED: Total time the car was in the race

GAP_FIRST: The time gap from this car to the first place car

GAP_PREVIOUS: The time gap from this car to the car that finished in front of it

Find these files within the zip:
  • 23_AnalysisEnduranceWithSections_Race_1_anonymized.CSV: Times for different sections of the racetrack
  • 03_Provisional Results_Race_1_Anonymized.CSV: The results of the race before any post race adjustments. Should be very similar to 05_Results by Class GR Cup Race 1
  • Official_Anonymized.CSV
  • 26_Weather_Race_1_Anonymized.CSV: Various weather readings for the track location over the course of the race
  • 99_Best 10 Laps By Driver_Race 1_Anonymized.CSV: The time of the top 10 laps for each driver with the average time of those laps
  • 05_Provisional Results by Class_Race 1_Anonymized.CSV: Results of the race based on class. Most drivers are probably amateur class (Am), so these should look the same as the other results_

R1_vir_telemetry_data.csv: Telemetry data for each car during the race.

  • Speed = Actual Speed
  • Gear = Current Gear Selection
  • ath = Throttle Blade
  • aps = Throttle Pedal Position
  • pbrake_r = rear brake pressure
  • pbrake_f = front brake pressure
