There are a lot of things I like about our little town.
The small town vibe.
The proximity to Salt Lake City and all its goodness.
The parks.
The people.
I could go on...
But there is one thing I can't stand.
The absolute hysteria that surrounds the
Bountiful Handcart Days Parade.
So I'm on my way to do some grocery shopping this morning,
driving down Main Street,
and despite notices like this one,
and the fact that the parade doesn't start until 6pm
tomorrow,
all I can see up and down both sides of the street is this:
blankets, chairs, ropes, etc. saving places for a parade.
Apparently people started showing up yesterday afternoon
to claim their prime parade watching spot,
and the majority of them will take turns sitting with
their stuff from now until parade time to ensure
that no one snakes their spot.
All this for a parade that's not even that good.
Simmer down, south Davis county residents,
it's true.
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is good.
The Rose Parade is good.
The Bountiful Handcart Days Parade is okay.
I know it's a tradition.
I know everybody around here grew up going to the parade.
I know the kids love it.
I'm not suggesting we lose the parade.
I'm merely asking that people chill out, obey the rules,
and show up an hour (not day) or two before the parade to get "good" seats.
And for those of you locals who are now fuming,
feel free to visit with me at the parade tomorrow.
We'll be there...
if we can find a spot.

Ha! I drove down main street at 8 am today, the day of the parade, looking for a spot. And now I know why I couldn't find any space! Loved your rant. I agree in every way. Call me if you find a spot and I'll join you!
lol. that is too funny! I cant believe they actually post signs saying that. I agree with you all the way! :)
It annoys me to no end. Always has.
Also, that was probably the most polite rant...ever.
Seriously! People are crazy. We went to Handcart days and thought we would catch a glimpse of the parade as it turned on 100 West (why they don't just continue down 4th North might is a rant I will save for my blog) and after our kids got their place this couple in their 60's who obviously don't have kids came sat down from us and then proceeded to tell my kids to move so they could see. Seriously??!!! Um, I think parades are for kids and yes lady I did see you hold your hand out and get candy while kids around you didn't get any.
I think the parade makes me too grumpy...I better stick to fireworks :)
