Castle 2.12: A Rose for Everafter
Jan. 12th, 2010 10:14 pmBack in Knoxville. Classes start tomorrow. (Well, mine start on Thursday, but anyway.) Bah. So not ready for vacation to be over.
I ran into three other English department grad students this afternoon at the local used book emporium. Because we are just that predictable, we found each other in the classics/"modern literature" aisle.
Speaking of books, I spent $120 at the university bookstore on texts for the one class I'm taking this semester. And I own two of them, so I wasn't even buying all of them. BLAH.
*
This one was a bit predictable--really, who couldn't see that kiss coming from the moment the previews mentioned "Castle's old flame," and then the inevitable ending where she nudges Beckett about her UST with Castle?--but enjoyable nevertheless. I've missed this show over the past month. There are so many little things that just make me smile. Like the following:
- I love that Castle has a little Nikki Heat silhouette on his phone for when Beckett calls.
- Alexis's and Beckett's red coats were fabulous. I also loved the white boatneck shirt Beckett wore later in the episode. Her shoulders are fabulous. (And I totally think Beckett would be the type to find something she likes---probably on sale--and buy one in every color. Hee!)
- Alexis taping Castle to the chair. HA! And then Castle getting himself out of it with help from the trash can (and the trash). Bwahahaha.
- Esposito: Dude, "mauve"?
Ryan: What? I have sisters.
- Hmmm. Lainie was definitely pushing the Beckett/Castle train hard in this one. That could be getting a little annoying.
- Wow, mom-in-law from hell. But I loved Castle's delayed-reaction shudder when Beckett noted that he might have been having Thanksgiving with her.
- "You were not asking very loudly." Awww! Continuity!
- Beckett: When I'm not here, do you guys braid each other's hair and debate who's the best Jonas brother?
Esposito & Ryan: No. But it's Nick./Totally Nick./Nick's the cutest.
And with that I think I just started shipping them. (Uh...the Jonas brothers sing, right? Or something? Wait, aren't they all minors?)
- Beckett: "[If you weren't Kyra's old flame,] you'd be making up a story. [makes up story]" She is TOTALLY going to write a crime novel one day. And have it outsell one of Castle's books. TOTALLY.
- Whoa, Castle wrote that book longhand? How long ago was this? (And was that picture a real one of Nathan and Alyssa Milano from however many years ago? It looked awfully authentic, not like they'd just messed up their hair and applied makeup.)
- Oh, Castle. Beckett plays you like the proverbial violin. Of course she knew about the meeting on the roof.
- And Esposito interrupts again. You know he and Ryan are running a pool about when they'll finally get together.
- Beckett's been a bridesmaid six times?Beckett has six female friends?
- I liked the twists and turns of the plot. I don't usually try to solve the mystery, but I don't know that I would've unraveled it if I had been trying this time.
- I really like how often they show either Castle or Beckett (usually Castle) having some kind of character moment, and the other one looking on from another room or a short distance or whatever. I think it really adds to the feeling that the writers are building a romance and a relationship between these characters--showing them getting to know/respect/like each other--and not just milking UST.
- Aw, Beckett caught the bouquet. You know, I feel like it's almost become cliche for the obvious target not to catch the bouquet, so I like that they had her get it this time. Cute.
I have The Thin Man coming up soon in my Netflix queue, and as I've heard many, many people compare this show to that movie series, I'm very excited. (I tried reading the original novel by Dashiell Hammett, but didn't get far. Detective fiction doesn't do a lot for me.)

Date: 2010-01-13 03:52 am (UTC)Just? JUST?! Dude, where have you been?
And yes, the Jonas brothers sing, though I don't think they're all that young anymore.
Beckett has six female friends?
I thought the same thing; not just that, but six friends close enough to want her in their weddings. Who woulda thought?!

Date: 2010-01-13 04:07 am (UTC)Well, I'd sort of seen the potential, but hadn't committed yet. I usually stick in that mode for most slash couples, so this is definitely progress for me!

Okay, I had to go Wikipedia them, and while two are in their (early) twenties, Nick is still 17. Which I guess is better than the 13-15 I was thinking they were.
(These people are, like, massively famous, aren't they? I live under a rock.)

Seriously! Maybe we could meet one of them at some point, instead of having the show imply that Beckett is basically friendless except for Lainie, who's always struck me as more of a friend-of-convenience than anything else.

I'm sure we shall, but I don't disagree with you.

Date: 2010-01-13 03:07 pm (UTC)Heh. Hollywood should hire me as someone to run their pop culture references by to see if they'll be dated in ten years. Since I never know who the hell they're referencing, I can tell them if the joke is still funny without the cultural context.

Date: 2010-01-13 04:57 am (UTC)I agree with the previous comment about the playfulness of the Thin Man movies. Of course, IMHO that's a lot to do with the cast, too.
I'm still annoyed that the writers not only have never visited Grand Central but can't be bothered to Google the clock and see that it is physically impossible to dance underneath it. Way to be clueless, guys.

I've heard so many good things about them that I hope I won't be disappointed when I finally see them!

Maybe the characters actually meant "dancing off to the side of the clock, near the info booth, but it's easier to say 'under the clock' than 'some unspecified number of feet away from the clock'"?

Date: 2010-01-13 03:39 pm (UTC)Sure, except for the part where it's not only impossible but makes absolutely no sense since the clock isn't even much taller than me? If this were a show from another country, or that was set in another place, they could get away with it, but no joke, ANYONE who has ever set foot in GC would react the same way I did. They just basically blew off all of New York in spite of the fact that the show is supposedly set there. It's sort of like saying that Big Ben is bright red and was installed yesterday.

Date: 2010-01-13 04:18 pm (UTC)(From my dim memories of being in Grand Central four years ago, I recall the clock as being placed where one could conceivably dance under it in the sense of "under the watchful eye of the clock," so I stand by my original interpretation.)

Date: 2010-01-13 08:06 am (UTC)I wasn't bothered by Lanie's pushing the ship. But then I still watch Bones, and compared to Sweets, just about everybody's subtle and non-obnoxious.
I wouldn't be surprised if Beckett used to have more friends than she does now. You end up forming relationships with people in certain situations, like school or work out of shared experiences and the human instinct to form social bonds. But even if you enjoy those friendships they don't often last past a change of circumstance (for instance marriage and a change of priorities). Beckett is nice, intelligent, attractive, she's easy to like, but she also keeps her own council. I wonder if she's got the sort of friends who feel a stronger connection to her than she's willing to feel for them. ...sorry, that got rambly :)
(I need a Beckett icon)

OH DEAR GOD, YES. Sweets was about 40% of the reason I stopped watching that show.
