So, 1000xResist

I was too tired to have the focus for Dark Souls-ing in the last few days, so binge-played 1000xResist and now I feel like I'm been punched in the head.

Basically a walking simulator/visual novel, so don't go expecting complex gameplay, but HOLY FUCK.

For all of you looking for fiction with fucked-up complicated women who are somewhere on a spectrum from "morally grey" to "evil but sympathetic" (with the odd dip into "idealistic but destructive") having fucked-up dynamics with other fucked-up complicated women: 1000xResist has SO MANY of them. It has almost no characters who don't fit that archetype, in fact.

(I considered whether it passes the reverse-Bechdel test -- i.e. two male characters have a conversation that's not about a woman -- and I think it may juuust scrape past in a 5-second exchange in one of the flashbacks, but barely. There are very very few men in this story, for plot-related reasons.)

I found out afterwards that the development team were a devised theatre group who decided to start making a game when everything was shut down during the pandemic, and somehow this fully checks out (complimentary).

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1675830/1000xRESIST/ (you can even pick it up in a bundle with Slay The Princess for bonus visual novel headfuck)

Do note the content notes from the devs: Photosensitivity Warning: Flashing Lights, Cursing and Crude Language, Generational Trauma, Acts of Violence and Terrorism, Disease Outbreak, Mention of Suicide, Mention of Animal Cruelty/Pet Death, Blood, Body Horror, Emotional Abuse, Bullying, Dead Bodies, Vomit, Drowning, Fire, Gore, Needles, Racism and General Mature Content.

(I would also add a specific note for torture, and for fucked-up mother-daughter and sister-sister relationships, that being one of the core elements of the game, along with the aforementioned generational trauma.)

Things that made me happy today

Finding a bunch of the shirts I like in my size at Ross! (I bought eight, because they're like $7 each.) And texting with my mom!

Daily Smiley: ٩(˘◡˘)۶

Quotes of the Day

(pulled from my "brain dump" Notes App file)

Let him look at granny panties on his iPad in peace.
--one of the hosts of Crooked Media's Terminally Online, 2025-11-22

Dreams

I know that I had dreams, but no details.

Things I Bought

Ross: those eight cheap (lightweight, comfortable, work-appropriate) shirts
Costco: gas, agave margarita, mixed nuts
Staples: tube mailer for sending diamond painting stuff to my mom

Accomplishments

Stocking up on work shirts, and I've already filled the tube mailer (just need to address and decorate it and packing-tape it within an inch of its life like when my mom sends a package), and oh yeah I was out of bed by 9am on a Saturday.

Food

A slice of pepperoni pizza and a mocha freeze from Costco; Kirkland agave margarita and Walmart brand sour cream and onion "pringles" before bed

Today I wore:

Medium blue "work shirt," black straight-leg yoga pants

Movies/TV Shows/Books/Podcasts

Podcast: On Brand; various YouTube videos. (I watched all of S1 of AppleTV+'s Invasion yesterday and intended to watch more today but got distracted.)

Friends

Not a work day, so I'm gonna say the people behind me in line at Costco (it was a short exchange but it was friendly), and my mom, because it was nice to text with her throughout the late morning and afternoon.

Music I Loved Today

Bouncing through Sirius XM Radio stations, because it's fucking December, and The fucking Bridge is playing the occasional FUCKING CHRISTMAS SONG. Just tell all of us all non-Christians to eat shit and die, why don'tcha.

What I Learned Today

That my mom and stepdad are planning on visiting in a few months, so I need to really speed up my making-my-apartment-look-like-an-actual-functional-adult-lives-there.

Shrimp Étouffée

Shrimp Étouffée
Servings: 4 Active time: 20 mins Total time: 30 mins

Ingredients

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 large white onion, finely diced
1 stalk celery, finely diced
1/4 cup finely diced red bell pepper
3 scallions, white and green parts, finely diced, plus more for garnish (optional)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, plus more for garnish (optional)
3 medium cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon)
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 pounds peeled, deveined medium (41-50 count) shrimp, thawed if frozen
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or more as needed
1 teaspoon Creole seasoning, or more as needed
Cooked white or brown rice, for serving

Steps

1. In a Dutch oven or deep-sided pot over medium-high heat, heat the oil until shimmering. Add the onion, celery, bell pepper, scallion and parsley and cook, stirring, until softened and with onions just beginning to get translucent, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Remove from the heat.
2. In a small pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and stir until smooth. Cook, stirring constantly, until the roux darkens to a light brown color, about 5 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and continue stirring. The roux will darken off of the heat.
3. Add the roux to the vegetables and stir until fully incorporated.
4. Return the Dutch oven to medium heat. Add the shrimp, cayenne and Creole seasoning and stir to combine. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until shrimp curl, turn pink and are cooked through, about 10 minutes. (The cooking time will vary with the shrimp size.)
5. Taste and season with more cayenne and Creole seasoning, if desired. Sprinkle with additional chopped scallions or parsley, if desired, and serve over cooked white or brown rice.

NOTES: This dish requires no stock. The moisture from simmering the raw shrimp will create the liquid needed for the rich sauce, which is thickened with a dark brown flour-based roux and seasoned with Cajun/Creole “trinity” of onions, celery and bell pepper. If the sauce is too thick, add water or stock, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency.

One caution: It’s easy to overcook shrimp as cooking time will vary with the size and freshness of the crustaceans, so simmer the shrimp until they are pink and curled. Then, pluck out one to do a taste test.

If you’ve never made a roux, don’t be intimidated. It’s simple. Combine equal parts fat and flour over medium heat and stir constantly until it reaches the desired color. The darker the roux, the deeper the color and the richer the flavor of the sauce. This recipe is a great way to practice making a roux because it uses only 3 tablespoons of flour and 3 tablespoons of butter. If you go too far and scorch the roux, pitch it, and start again.

Kookoo Sabzi (Persian Herb Frittata)

Kookoo Sabzi (Persian Herb Frittata)
Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 35 minutes Total Time: 50 minutes Yield: 6-8 servings

Ingredients

1 cup fresh dill, finely chopped
1 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped
1 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
3 cups fresh garlic chives or spring onion, finely chopped
6 large eggs
3 tablespoons Greek yogurt
½ cup walnuts, chopped coarsely (optional, plus more for garnish)
⅓ cup barberries, soaked in water for 10-15 minutes (optional, plus more for garnish)
1 teaspoon dried fenugreek
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon ground turmeric powder
½ teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon cornstarch or all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons avocado oil (for cooking)

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, combine all the herbs and mix until evenly distributed.
In another large bowl, whisk together eggs, yogurt, walnuts and barberries (if using), fenugreek, salt, pepper, turmeric powder, paprika, and cornstarch until smooth.
Add the egg mixture to the herbs. Stir until evenly combined.
In a non-stick 10-inch skillet, add oil and heat over medium heat for 1-2 minutes until hot. Add the batter and spread evenly.
Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to low. Cook for 15-20 minutes until the top has set. You can run a rubber spatula along the outer edges of the frittata to make sure it’s not sticking.
Take a large plate (larger than the size of the pan) and place it upside down over the pan. Carefully flip the pan over to flip the frittata onto the plate.
In order to firm up the bottom half of the frittata, repeat the same process. Carefully slide the frittata back into the pan and cook for 10-15 minutes (covered) until the bottom is completely set.
Remove from heat and allow it to cool. About 5-10 minutes.
Garnish with crushed walnuts and dried barberries, if desired. Slice into wedges and serve warm or cold with Persian bread and yogurt.

Notes

How to store: To store leftover Kookoo Sabzi, let it cool to room temperature before placing it in an airtight container. It will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

How to reheat: Reheat in a pan over medium heat for a few minutes or microwave in short intervals until warmed through. For a crispier texture, use an air fryer or oven at 300°F for about 5-7 minutes.

How to freeze: Kookoo Sabzi freezes well. Wrap individual slices in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze for up to 2 months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge overnight and warm in the oven or pan.

Fried Cabbage and Bacon Slaw

Fried Cabbage and Bacon Slaw
Yield: serves 6-8

Ingredients

12 ounce package of smoked bacon
1 small head green cabbage, outer leaves removed and cored
1 small yellow onion, peeled, halved, and thinly sliced.
1 medium carrot, peeled and cut in small dice
salt and fresh cracked black pepper

Instructions

Cook the bacon until crisp, and drain. Reserve the grease, and crumble the bacon. Halve or quarter the cabbage and shred it finely.
In a large skillet or wok, heat 3 tablespoons of the bacon grease and sauté the onion and carrot for a few minutes until softened. Add 2 to 3 more tablespoons of grease, and add the shredded cabbage along with half of the cooked bacon, and stir fry until the cabbage starts to brighten in color, turn glossy, and soften. This will only take a few minutes, but you can customize your slaw by cooking it a little less or more than this. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Serve the slaw hot or warm, topped with the rest of the crumbled bacon.
Leftover slaw stored in the refrigerator will stiffen due to the bacon grease. Bring the slaw to room temperature or heat it briefly in the microwave before serving.

Make it your own

Make it tangy - the flavor is amazing as is, but you can, if you like, hit the slaw with a little vinegar at the end of cooking. This gives it a nice tang.
Make it with other meats - leftover corned beef, ham, pancetta, or sausage.
Make it with red cabbage.
Make it with classic coleslaw spices - You could also use onion and garlic powder, celery seed, caraway seeds or a little mustard.

(Re: the previous entry.)

Dragonslayer Ornstein & Executioner Smough (also known as Oreo and S'mores, Biggie and Smalls, Pikachu and Snorlax, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and any other name the fandom can come up with) are one of the most iconic boss fights in the entire Dark Souls series.

There are much harder ones in later games (and in the DLC), but they're still legendary and still regarded as a Serious boss fight.

They're also a famous mid-game difficulty spike and cause of rage quitting. Conversely, if you can get through O&S, people often say you should have the skills to beat the rest of the base game.

The major issue is that it's a duo boss fight, with one agile speedster (Ornstein) who can zip most of the way across the room in a single move, and also throws lightning, and one heavyweight bruiser (Smough) who is slower but not that slow -- he has a charge attack to close distance fast that hits like a freight train -- and does huge amounts of damage.

So for the first phase of the fight, you have to try to keep track of where they both are simultaneously (not to mention where you are in relation to the room, so you don't back yourself into a corner and get trapped) and constantly manoeuvre to try to be able to get in a hit on one without being hit by the other.

If you kill one of them, the fight goes into a second phase where the surviving one absorbs some of their powers (so if it's Smough, he gets lightning, while if it's Ornstein he gets sized up and picks up part of Smough's moveset) and also restarts with a full and vastly increased health bar. Though there is a general consensus that the second phase is more manageable than the first phase simply because you're not having to fight two bosses at the same time.

Illustrative example of someone doing the fight:

(You can summon an NPC or other human players to try to help you, but the bosses get extra health to compensate and it's still tough. And also I have been having enormous fun trying to beat all the bosses without summons so far, and am averse to the extra complications and unpredictability of having more people -- human or NPC -- in the mix while I try to figure out a fight. Though I've also had enormous fun being a summons for other people on boss fights, so zero disrespect to people summoning*, it's an excellent game mechanic.)

As I may have mentioned once or twice, my brain has huge difficulty tracking multiple moving objects (which is why I can't drive or cycle on the road) and I have the reaction speed of a slime mould.

So yeah. I knew O&S are the big mid-game stopper and I was very aware that this could potentially be the point where I hit a wall and the game became flatly impossible for me. Or at least where I'd have to summon to get through it.

And that did not happen. I solo-ed O&S.

It took multiple sessions over multiple days before I mastered it, but that's standard for me on DS boss fights. And I had SO MUCH FUN. It's SUCH A COOL FIGHT.

I did a thing that was a real achievement for me and I am very proud, and especially given the shitshow this year has been, I'll take it.

{*Necessary disclaimer only because Dark Souls fandom has historically had a section who are toxic as fuck and would like you to know that you didn't really beat the game if you summoned or used magic or whatthefuckever else they disapprove of.}

12 Golden Delicious apples—peeled, halved lengthwise and cored
Crème fraiche, for serving

HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the puff pastry 1/8 inch thick. Cut out a 12-inch round, transfer to a baking sheet and refrigerate; reserve the pastry scraps for another use.
