Not that I've been a posting machine or anything, but I'm spending the weekend with my brother and won't be around until Sunday evening. Fyi!

Gone by [livejournal.com profile] bluflamingo for [livejournal.com profile] thelittlebang. It's Firefly and Kaylee/Inara, and it's angsty and lovely, and you should go read it!

Ginger Chocolate Chip Cookies, adapted from Cupcake Punk.

zomg ) This made about three dozen, or would have if I'd cooked all the dough instead of eating some of it raw with Will. They'd probably be better in the winter than in the summer, but we had fresh ginger to use and this is how it wound up.

mouth by mouth the legends are made was nominated as gen at the 2008 Stargate Fan Awards. You can see its category here, or by link-hopping as follows: View Nominations Here > SGA Fan Fiction > Gen > Character > Other > Short Works.

mouth by mouth is both the last SGA fic I expect to write and my favorite of what I did write for that fandom, so I'm pleased and flattered to have been nominated. (Thank you, whoever did!) So, you know, check the awards out if you feel like it. There are some awesome things up there this year.

I haven't really been following the warnings and triggers discussion, largely because talking about triggers calls up stuff, and I don't know how to handle that well yet. But, I do want to talk for a second about the idea that fans should have their friends vet stuff before they consume it, to make sure it won't trigger them. Maybe someone has already said this! I've been skimming, barely, and not participating at all until now.

People who think that running stuff by your friends is actually a workable way to consume fannish stuff must be coming from someplace where they don't have to deal with stuff triggering them. I can't understand how someone could say that if they knew what they were talking about.

It assumes that she has friends who read stuff in whatever new fandom she wants to check out, that she'll be able to find someone to check out tiny obscure fandoms on yuletide even if they've never heard of the canon before, or someone who wants to check out a 100k work epic for her, or someone she trusts enough to tell about the ridiculous Twilight/Merlin crossover she wants to read at three in the morning because she can't sleep.

It assumes she and her friends all want to read the same things. It assumes that at high-traffic times, like during bigbang and yuletide or after meaty episodes or a new novel is published or a new movie is released, her friends have enough time to check stuff out on her behalf, whether or not it's their must-read fic of the day. It assumes that she and her friends have the same tastes in pairings and genres and cliches.

But, most offensively unrealistic about the idea to me, it assumes that she has fannish friends that she trusts enough to tell her triggers to. It assumes that she has people that she trusts enough to tell about something traumatic that happened to her, about what may be the worst thing in her life. It means that she has to deal with whatever-it-is enough to get herself in the frame of mind to tell people. And while those of us who've been hanging around fandom for years may have a group of people she can trust that much, I'm willing to bet that newbies do not. How are the girls and women who are googling for fic on the first time going to know what's in a fic if the author doesn't tell them? Who do they have to ask besides the author herself?

In case anyone who's interested hasn't already seen this: [livejournal.com profile] candle_beck has written On The Dodge, which is a BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID SPN AU. I will own up to not having seen the movie in five or ten years (which actually just made reading it better, because I didn't remember everything that would happen so it was like getting it for the first time), but it is a LOVELY fic, as is everything she does.

But, keep in mind 1. who's writing 2. how the movie ends when you go to read it. I read the first two parts last night in bed and then STOPPED because I knew better than to keep going before I went to sleep. (Suggested safety tab: Ascalon, also by [livejournal.com profile] candle_beck.)

In continued crossover mindfucks, Criminal Minds 411 is guest-staring Gina Torres AND Mitch Pillegi. 411 )

Death Cab's I Will Possess Your Heart; BSG; Kara/Leoben; Leoben POV.

How I wish you could see the potential, the potential of you and me.
Its like a book elegantly bound but in a language that you can't read, just yet.

You gotta spend some time, love. You gotta spend some time with me,
and I know that you'll find love, I will possess your heart.

THIS SONG CREEPS ME THE FUCK OUT, BTW. I have never heard such a stalker anthem before. Nothing about it is cute or sweet except for the way it sounds; if the music was as disturbing as the lyrics, I would LEARN how to vid TONIGHT (well, start to, anyway) in order to make this vid. Maybe Placebo will cover it or something.

more BSG; also SPN and Prison Break )

As always, the measurements are approximate. I don't usually measure when I cook so don't feel like you need to follow this exactly.

Is LJ screwing up for anyone else right now? It seems like every other journal I try to bring up, including mine, won't load.

prison break finale; spoilers; if spn goes out this poorly done it will break my heart )

I take back every time I've recced this show at y'all, btw. If you are going to watch it, just stop at the end of season two. (Don't watch the new Star Wars, either, while you're at it.)

Ok, I'm cutting myself off from studying. At this point, I either know it or I don't, and no amount of reviewing is going to help.

But, I owe this meme: the first TEN people to comment in this post get to request a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level.

SPN and J2 + girlfriends are obviously fair game, but I'll also do Harry Potter, Firefly, Elizabeth-era SGA, Prison Break up to the first half of season four, and BSG up to 404. (If you spoil me for BSG after that, you get a ban_set instead of a drabble. I'm only kidding a little.) Timestamps or whatever are fair game as well. :D

(I want to keep this all at the lj post, so dreamwidthers, you can comment over there if you want one. Anon commenting is on if you don't have an account.)

Before I get back to work, have a link.

Let's make it really clear, people. If you identify as a POC/nonwhite person and you read or watch scifi or fantasy, give yourself a name check in this thread. I am particularly wanting shoutouts from people who do not live in the US and who have still managed to read genre fiction.

I'm tired of people trying to render us invisible unless they have been given a memo about our existences.

[livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang is turned in! First draft is 33,574 words, and I bet it'll wind up around 40,000 after I expand all the stuff I know needs expanding.

Thank fuck. Now all I have to worry about for the next few days is -- well, everything else, but. \o/
latentfunction: (sucks to be you darlings.)
I was going to do that lurker meme, but I sort of doubt anyone lurks here, since I flock most stuff. (But uh, if I'm wrong, feel free to delurk at me?)

On a related note, at least in my head, does anyone else want Dreamwidth codes? I have five four three two more.

Also, it's driving me crazy that so much interesting stuff if being posted at [livejournal.com profile] j2_everafter, because of the deadline there, and I have no time to read any of it yet. :( (Has any of it been non-AU? I don't even know how that would work but it sounds awesome now.)
