A Movie & A Book

What do you get when you have a repetitive title, a ton of star cameos, intentional bad acting, bad lines that will go down in history, and ridiculously far-fetched scenes? Only one of the coolest Syfy movies ever! I have a special place in my heart for cheesy movies and Sharknado 2: The Second One has only the best kind of cheese.

Image

After watching Sharknado 2: The Second One, for the second time, I discovered something that made me love the movie even more. How to Survive a Sharknado, which appears twice in the movie, is actually a book!! *Gasp* I knew right away that I had to have it.

Image

The book covers surviving so many crazy (yet absolutely plausible) disasters and creatures. Some examples of chapters in the book are Sharknado, Antdemic, Ice Twister, Swamp Volcano, Piranhaconda, Pteracuda, and Sharktopus. Each section includes a sketch, some background info, tips to surviving each situation, and more.

I highly recommend watching both sharknado movies and reading the book. You wouldn’t want to be stuck in a sharknado or other disaster with no clue how to protect yourself and your loved ones, right!??

And because I like to look out for my readers, I came up with a few additional tips for surviving a Sharknado.

(TIPS INCLUDE MOVIE SPOILERS….and will probably make little to no sense if you haven’t seen the second movie)

If you absolutely must be on a boat or ferry, DO stay away from the railing because…well if you can’t figure out why then there’s proooobably nothing I can say to help you.

DON’T play frogger with sharks! Not everyone is as talented as Fin Shepard so chances are it will not end well.

DO choose your cabbie wisely when in the city as most of them will not be able to make a tow rope magically appear when you need it.

DON’T be a celebrity in the time of a Sharknado! What’s that? You’re not a celebrity? Great! Your chances of survival already increased.

DO visit Vinnie’s Pizza Shop because heeee, he got what you neeeed.

DO start chainsaws and then throw them into the sharknado, because there’s no way that will backfire. Ok ok, I’m totally kidding about this one. Please don’t do it because contrary to popular belief chainsaws do not know the difference between sharks and people.

Movie Review: Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Night of the Living Dead
1968 - George A Romero

This was my first time watching any of the classic zombie movies and it’s amazing to see how much has changed in 45 years of filmmaking!

Once I noticed that Night of the Living Dead was a black and white film I really wasn’t sure what I would think of it. Normally I tend to watch movies made in the 80’s or more recent. Overall I enjoyed my first adventure into classic zombies but I will admit that I ended up chuckling at some things and some of the characters. Like Barbara. I can’t help but compare her to Maggie or Michone on the Walking Dead (I’m so excited that the new season has started!!), Katie or Jenni in Rhiannon Frater’s As the World Dies series, or even Ashley in Dana Fredsti’s Ashley Parker series. The roles that women play and how they’re portrayed has drastically changed in movies and books. Women are fighting back and women are now surviving!

Although I did enjoy my time spent in 1968, I’m a huge fan of special effects, kick butt action scenes, and strong women and because of that I have to say that I still prefer current films over the classics.

Movie Review - Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Image
Image from IMDB.com

This weekend Krista (Krista’s Dust Jacket) and I went to see the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie. I have NOT read any of the books in the Mortal Instrument series and really all I knew about the book/movie is that the main character is a demon hunter.

Movie Genre

This movie covers a few different genres. You, of course, have the fantasy element but at the same time there’s action, mystery/suspense, and even some romance elements.

Special Effects – Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down?

The special effects get a very enthusiastic two thumbs up!!  Some of the demons especially rocked!

My Thoughts

As much as I love seeing books come to life on the big screen, I’m very glad I haven’t read the books in this series. Without having read them I was able to go into the movie blind and get the full experience without comparing it to something else.

The action scenes were suspenseful, the romancey parts were sweet, and again the special effects were top notch. I loved it all! This is a movie that I plan to buy and watch it on the day the DVD is released! And I will force convince my hubby to watch it also. Who am I kidding; I’ll tie him to a chair if needed ;-)

Some of the random things I said during the movie

What the hell is THAT?!?!

Run!!!

That’s so AWESOME!!

Ooo, he’s cute!

No! Don’t do that <Sorry, I can’t tell you what ‘that’ is>! Put it back! What are you doing?!

Other Recommendations

I haven’t seen many movies with this type of a fantasy element but I will recommend World War Z (my review) because of the action.

Movie Reviews: Beautiful Creatures vs Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

Image vs   Image

images from imdb.com

I most of the day to myself on Sunday so I ran some errands and then hit up our local Red Box. For those who don’t know what Red Box is, it’s this magical box and with the wave of a hand it dispenses the movie(s) of your true heart’s desire. Ok, it’s really just a vending machine where you can rent movies for $1 or $1.50. Anyway, I ended up choosing Beautiful Creatures and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. It was a pure coincidence (or lack of anything better in the magic box) that I chose two witchy movies.

As with my review of Warm Bodies & World War Z I may include some minor spoilers. Also, I should point out that I have not read Beautiful Creatures so this post is based solely on the movie.

I’ll refer to Beautiful Creatures as BC and Hansel & Gretel as H&G.

Types of Witches

The witches in BC prefer to be called Castors…blah, blah, blah, you say potato I say…potato (hhmm, that saying doesn’t really work in text does it?). Anyway, the Castors look like normal people and not like the stereotypical wrinkly, green skinned witches of lore. In this movie, there are good and bad Castors, also known as dark and light. The movie is about which will claim Lena on her 16th birthday.

H&G also has good and bad witches. The bad witches (this is where some of the cheesiness comes in) look closer to what you think when you think of witch but really in this movie they look partially evil and partially corny.

slight spoiler in 3…2…1…The good witches look like normal people. That’s only a slight spoiler because in the beginning you, as well as Hansel & Gretel, only know about bad witches.

Goals of the Witches

In BC, the dark Castors want Lena to be evil and the light Castors want her to be claimed for the light. Dark vs Light and Good vs Evil. Which side will win the battle?

The goal of the witches in H&G is to take over the world, of course. What evil being doesn’t want world domination?!

Movie Genre

BC is more of a romantic drama…if there is such a genre. There is also the slight fantasy element added in the mix.

H&G also has the fantasy aspect, perhaps a bit more than BC but for the most part I would consider it to be an action movie. The hard core action movie fans of the world may debate that classification but really Hansel & Gretel pretty much have made their life about hunting, fighting, and killing witches which sounds like action to me.

My Thoughts

BC didn’t impress me and, from the beginning, Ethan’s voice really annoyed me! The tone of his voice and the over-the-top accent just grated on my nerves. I know that’s a strange thing to harp on but I couldn’t help it. His annoying factor did ease up here and there which was a relief.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only thing that I didn’t enjoy. Overall the acting, the special effects, the insta-love, and even the plot all fell flat for me. I don’t think I’ll be watching BC again and I don’t plan to watch any movies that follow.

H&G may have had some cheesy aspects (i.e. the makeup/costumes used for the witches, the noises that the witches make, etc.) but I liked it a lot more than BC. H&G is a fun and entertaining adaptation of a classic tale. It’s one of those movies that you can watch multiple times and one that would make great background noise as you go about your household ‘chores’. As I alluded to above, the action scenes may not have been the best ever but really who cares, not every movie has to be top notch to be enjoyable.

Have you seen Beautiful Creatures or Hansel & Gretel? What did you think? Did you enjoy them?

I don’t have too many witch movies coming to mind right now but if you’re looking for a romancy witch movie then maybe check out Practical Magic. It’s a little older (1998) and the darker parts of it are a bit corny but I'm a Sandra Bullock fan so I like it. :)

Bewitched is another lighter romantic comedy. Despite my having a very hard time seeing Will Ferrell as a dreamboat and the apple of someone’s eye (no offense Will) the 2005 version of Bewitched is my favorite.

Movie Review: Warm Bodies vs World War Z

Image vsImage

Just a warning, this posts talks about the types of zombies, etc. in each movie so if you like to be totally surprised when first watching a movie then maybe avoid this post. BUT I won’t list much more than you could find out by looking into the movies or watching the movie trailers.

Also, please note that I have not read either book so this is solely comparing the two movies. To break it down a little I’ll compare the types of zombies, their speed, and their goals. I’ll also look at the genre of each movie as well as my overall thoughts of each.

I'll refer to World War Z as WWZ and Warm Bodies as WB

Type of Zombies

In WB, there are two types of zombies. First are the zombies that still pretty much look like…well they look like vampires almost. They mostly just look like pale humans. The second type of zombies, in the movie, are more skeletal and pretty freaking scary. I would NOT want to meet one in a dark alley…or anywhere for that matter!

The zombies in WWZ are a little closer to the classic zombie. They have the cloudy eyes and stretched and sunken skin. But they’re not the rotting flesh and mangled or missing body parts that you normally associate with zombies.

Zombie Goals

Braaaaaains….

All zombies exist only to eat brains & flesh right?! Nope, this isn’t always the case. Ok ok, it is the case in WB; those zombies need to eat flesh & brains in order to ‘survive’. A man’s zombie’s gotta eat right?! The more skeletal zombies in WB will pretty much hunt down any toasty treats aka warm bodies and beating hearts.

It’s a little different story with WWZ. Sure, the zombies in WWZ bite BUT they don’t bite to eat like the classic zombie. They bite to spread the ‘infection’ far and fast. And boy does it spread!! My husband is into the old fashioned (yet still totally awesome) zombies. You know, the ones that rip apart flesh to get to the gooey insides they love so much. Because of this he had a really hard time with the 'infection' twist. I, on the other hand, didn’t have any problems adjusting to this new aged zombie.

Zombie Speed

The more human zombies in WB are slow and sluggish while the skeletal zombies are speedy buggers!

The zombies in WWZ are ridiculously fast! Seriously, if one has you in its sights you don’t really stand a chance.

Movie Genre

WB is more in the romance genre while WWZ is much more of an action flick.

My Thoughts

WB is a slower paced movie. I enjoyed the uniqueness of zombies ‘thawing’ and becoming more human but I did have a problem adjusting to seeing zombies do some very human things. In my book, zombies just do not know how to or have the ability to operate a record player. It didn’t fit for me. It is an enjoyable movie but I don’t see it becoming one of those favorites that I can watch over and over.

WWZ is a fast paced, suspenseful, and action packed. I loved that it kept me on the edge of my seat and even made me jump a few times. I spotted my fellow movie goer, Krista from Krista’s Dust Jacket, covering her mouth with her hands and even biting her nails throughout the movie (yes, I totally just outted you Krista :) ). You know it’s a good movie when you see people really reacting to it. There is no doubt in my mind that I will be watching this again. I’m even tempted to go see it in the theater for a second time…maybe in 3D this time?

Have you seen either of these movies? Which is your favorite?

Other recommendations

If you’re looking for other zombie movies I’d recommend Zombieland and Zombie Apocalypse (the one with Ving Rhames).

Zombieland is more on the lighter side of zombie movies. Sure there’s some gore but the camera looks away for some of the scenes so there’s not as much as you might expect. It’s also fairly humorous. I’ve watched it entirely too many times and I still laugh at a couple scenes.

If you’re looking for a more serious zombie flick then try Zombie Apocalypse, there’s plenty of action and seriously how can you go wrong with a zombie tiger?!?!

Thanks for reading!

Message in a Bottle - A Book and a Movie

Message in a Bottle - The Book
ImageThrown to the waves, and to fate, the bottle could have ended up anywhere. Instead, it is found just three weeks after it begins its journey. Theresa Osborne, divorced and the mother of a twelve-year-old son, discovers it during a seaside vacation from her job as a Boston newspaper columnist. Inside is a letter that opens with, "My Dearest Catherine, I miss you my darling, as I always do, but today is particularly hard because the ocean has been singing to me, and the song is that of our life together." For Garrett, the message is the only way he knows to express his undying love for a woman he has lost. For Theresa, wary of romance since her husband shattered her trust, the message raises questions that intrigue her. Challenged by the mystery, and driven to find Garrett by emotions she does not fully understand, Theresa begins a search that takes her to a sunlit coastal town and an unexpected confrontation. Brought together either by chance or something more powerful, Theresa and Garrett's lives come together in a tale that resonates with our deepest hopes for finding everlasting love. Shimmering with suspense and emotional intensity, Message in a Bottle takes readers on a hunt for the truth about a man and his memories, and about both the heartbreaking fragility and enormous strength of love. For those who cherished The Notebook and readers waiting to discover the magic of Nicholas Sparks's storytelling, here is an achingly lovely novel of happenstance, desire, and the choices that matter most.

ImageA woman discovers a tragic love letter in a bottle on a beach, and is determined to track down its author.

My Thoughts:

Despite razzing from some of my book loving friends, up until last month, I had never read a Nicholas Sparks book. Shocking, I know! I think I had been putting it off because…well because I didn't want to cry lol! Is that a crazy reason to avoid reading a book? Maybe. But it’s not hard to guess that Nicholas Sparks’ books are very emotional.

Then this past weekend I was meandering around a local used book store and found a nicely loved copy of Message in a Bottle. Although it has been quite a while, I have seen the movie with Kevin Costner and Robin Wright at least twice. Since I had an idea of what to expect I decided to give the book a whirl.

I know there is always the debate on which is better, book or movie, but in this case I love both. Having seen the movie first, I found that reading the book added to that experience. But at the same time I felt it also took away from the reading experience. I couldn’t read it objectively because I thought about the movie with every turn of the page. And I wanted to watch the movie every time I picked up the book.

Both book and movie are emotional. The characters and their stories will creep into your heart and remain there long after reading/watching. And yes, I’ll admit that both made me cry.

Now for the question you’re all dying mildly curious to know the answer to....am I a new die hard Sparks fan after confessing my love for Message in a Bottle? Did I rush out to buy more of his books after reading one? Well, no. I really did enjoy the book but overall, I still don’t see myself reaching for the overly emotional books when deciding what my next read will be. I’m sure I will read other Sparks books…eventually, but they will be few and far between.

Zombie Movies & Books

Image

A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, and a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the Last Twinkie and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America.

Everything zombie seems to be popular right now and the movie world is no exception. I have only seen two zombie movies, Zombieland and Zombie Apocalypse. The two movies are very different but also very good. Hubby and I are watching Zombieland for what is probably the fifth time. When I started watching it for the first time, I thought it might end up being one of those movies that you regret spending your time on but it was quite the opposite. This movie never seems to get old and I still laugh out loud at some of the scenes.

Image

Months after a zombie plague has wiped out 90 percent of the American population, a small group of survivors fight their way cross-country to a rumored refuge on the island of Catalina.

Zombie Apocalypse is more action without the comedy and I can't explain why, but I absolutely love that this movie has a zombie tiger!

As for zombie books, well I have only read two...so far.

I have read the first two books in The Forest of Hands and Teeth series by Carrie Ryan.

ImageImage

They are good, but they weren't quite the five star books that I was expecting. See my reviews here and here. I do plan on finishing the trilogy and reading more zombie books, for example

Friends With Benefits - Movie Review

ImageDescription & photo from IMDB (International Movie Database):

Jamie (Mila Kunis) is a New York head-hunter trying to sign Los Angeles-based Dylan (Justin Timberlake) for her client. When he takes the job and makes the move, they quickly become friends. Their friendship turns into a friendship with benefits, but with Jamie's emotionally damaged past and Dylan's history of being emotionally unavailable, they have to try to not fall for each other the way Hollywood romantic comedies dictate.

My Thoughts:

I like romantic comedies but I was a little hesitant to watch this movie because I'm not a huge fan of Justin Timberlake.

On a whim, I ended up renting it when a friend and I had a movie day and figured I would let her decide if we watched it or not. She wanted to watch it and we both ended up loving it! It really is a good movie with a lot of laugh out loud moments and also a lot of sweet moments. I ended up watching it again that day after hubby got home from work since he wanted to see Mila...eerr the movie...no, really it was Mila lol!

So if you're looking for a somewhat guy friendly chick flick, maybe check into this one.

My Favorite Destruction Movies

I've been in a bit of a book slump this month so I thought I would post my favorite weather related destruction movies. I can't explain it, but I absolutely love this type of movie! I have seen a lot but the below are the ones that sick in my head.

I'm not at a computer (gotta love the world of technology and smart phones)so I cannot link them easily but you can check them out on http://www.imdb.com/ which is the International Movie Database.

These are classic destruction movies in my mind! Everyone should see them at least once.
- Twister (1996)
- Volcano (1997)
- Armageddon (1998)
- Dante's Peak (1997)
- Day After Tomorrow (2004)
- Perfect Storm (2000)
- 2012 (2009)

The 10.5 movies were made for TV. Since it wasn't made for the theatre some of the special effects are pretty cheesy but I still like the movies!
- 10.5 (2004)
- 10.5 Apocalypse (2006)

These are not my favorites but I like them so I wanted to include them
- Deep Impact (1998)
- Ice Twisters (2009)
- Night of the Twisters (1996)
- Atomic Twister (2002)
- Category 6: Day of Destruction (2004)
- Category 7 (2005) I wasn't the biggest fan of this one but don't let that deter you, you may like it more than I did.

What are your thoughts on destruction movies? Did I miss any good ones?

The Perfect Storm - Movie Review

ImageIMDB.com Summary:

In October 1991, a confluence of weather conditions combined to form a killer storm in the North Atlantic. Caught in the storm was the sword-fishing boat Andrea Gail. Magnificent foreshadowing and anticipation fill this true-life drama while minute details of the fishing boats, their gear and the weather are juxtaposed with the sea adventure.

My Review:

ImageI had seen this movie before (although I’m not sure how many times I’ve seen it) but I watched it again last night. It's an awesome movie about a fishing boat who is behind on it's catch so the captain decides to do a turnaround and takes a risk with an 'edge of the map' location. The problem comes in the form of a triple threat storm in their path. If you like emotional dramas with love, bitterness, edge of your seat action, and heartbreak I definitely recommend you check this out!!

HOP - Movie Review

ImageImageIMDB Summary:

E.B., the Easter Bunny's teenage son, heads to Hollywood, determined to become a drummer in a rock 'n' roll band. In LA, he's taken in by Fred after the out-of-work slacker hits E.B. with his car.

I went with a friend to see Hop this past weekend. Yes, I'm in my late 20's and I still love the occasional kids movie! Although, I don't think this is strictly a kids movie; I thought it was cute and funny!

We went at an oddball time so the theatre wasn't very full, which was good. It was also interesting because there were parts where the adults laughed and different parts where the kids laughed.

My husband lucked out of having to watch it in the theatre but that luck will run out when it comes out on DVD. ;-)  I think he will like it though!

Super Troopers Movie

Image
Five Vermont state troopers, avid pranksters with a knack for screwing up, try to save their jobs and out-do the local police department by solving a crime.

This movie might not be for everyone but I love it. Hubby and I have seen it so many times that we know most of the lines and it still amuses me every time! It's one of the simpler pleasures in life haha.

"The snozzberries taste like snozzberries."

Hunger Games Movie - Katniss is Cast

Personally, I am ecstatic that there is going to be a Hunger Games movie!! There's some controversy floating around about the actress that has been cast for the roll of Katniss. I can't say too much since I have not seen Jennifer Lawrence's other movie (Winters Bone), but if Suzanne picked her, then that's good enough for me!

'Hunger Games' director Gary Ross talks about 'the easiest casting decision of my life' -- by Karen Valby

Image Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos; Lester Cohen/WireImage.com
This afternoon Lionsgate announced that The Hunger Games had finally found its hero. Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) will play Katniss Everdeen, the embattled tribute from District 12 who goes on to lead a revolution in Suzanne Collins’ best-selling trilogy. Director Gary Ross spoke exclusively with EW about why 20-year-old Lawrence is the right actress, at the right age, to bring Katniss to life on the big screen. (Warning: Some spoilers follow.)

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When did you know Jennifer Lawrence was your Katniss?
GARY ROSS: First, I saw Winter’s Bone, and I just thought she was phenomenally talented and just kind of riveting and amazing and had so much power. And then we had a meeting and I found her to be just a completely compelling, intelligent person. But then she came in and read for me and it just knocked me out. I don’t want to go into too many details, but we did a scene from the movie and it was so amazingly powerful that it was sort of stunning. You glimpsed every aspect of the role and the potential of the whole movie.

There’s already quite a bit of hand-wringing that, no matter how good an actress Lawrence is, at 20 she’s simply too old for the role.
First of all, I talked to Suzanne extensively about this. Suzanne saw every single audition. And not only did Suzanne not have an issue with Jen’s age, she felt you need someone of a certain maturity and power to be Katniss. This is a girl who needs to incite a revolution. We can’t have an insubstantial person play her, and we can’t have someone who’s too young to play this. Suzanne was incredibly adamant about this. Far from being too old, she was very concerned that we would cast someone who was too young. In Suzanne’s mind, and in mine, Katniss is not a young girl. It’s important for her to be a young woman. She’s a maternal figure in her family. She’s had to take care of Prim, and in many ways her mother, since her father’s death. She’s had to grow up pretty quickly.

Was the opportunity to side step any child labor laws an added bonus?
That’s not the reason. I absolutely cast the right person for the role and in my view there wasn’t even a question who the best Katniss was. It was the easiest casting decision I ever made in my life.

In the books, Katniss is described as being olive-skinned, dark-haired, possibly biracial. Did you discuss with Suzanne the implications of casting a blond, caucasian girl?
Suzanne and I talked about that as well. There are certain things that are very clear in the book. Rue is African-American. Thresh is African-American. Suzanne had no issues with Jen playing the role. And she thought there was a tremendous amount of flexibility. It wasn’t doctrine to her. Jen will have dark hair in the role, but that’s something movies can easily achieve. [Laughs] I promise all the avid fans of The Hunger Games that we can easily deal with Jennifer’s hair color.

How will this inform the rest of your casting, in terms of age, look, everything?
Now that we have Katniss, we see who feels good with her both as Peeta and Gale and the rest of her family.

Have actors already started reading with her?
No, but we’ve read a lot of people for a lot of roles. Obviously, we have to make sure that the cast balances and makes sense. We’re very close. I have very, very good ideas about who I want in a lot of other roles. So I think there’ll be a lot of stuff coming pretty quickly.

Have you had conversations with her about the enormity of stepping not just into a franchise like this, but a character that is already so beloved by the world? How do you prepare a young person for that?
Oh god, have you ever met her? [Laughs] Don’t worry about Jen Lawrence. She’s a very powerful person. Jennifer is from Kentucky. I think she feels such a complete connection to who Katniss is, the way many people do, but this just seems like a very good fit to her. I think she’s very confident about the role, I think it feels very organic to her. She’s ready to dive in. She goes to archery class next week. Yeah, she’s going to start shooting arrows next week! I think by the end of the week she’s going to be learning to climb trees. She’s a very strong, confident young woman. She’s very confident in her own talent and who she is as a woman, and I think that all these things make her want to dive into the role.

Will you indulge in the blogs and message boards over the next few days to gauge fan reaction to the casting news?
I think one of the wonderful things about The Hunger Games is that everyone has such a personal relationship to the material that they feel they have a very specific idea about the character and who the character is. And that’s wonderful. And I think a lot of the debate that has gone on about who Katniss is is fantastic, because people feel very passionately that their take on the character is unique and correct. But the one that I’ve honestly listened to the most has been Suzanne, who conjured this girl out of her own imagination. To Suzanne, Jen is the perfect realization of the character who is in her head.

Red Riding Hood - The Movie

**Slight Spoilers if you haven't read the book**

I decided to write my review tonight instead of waiting until tomorrow.

Red Riding Hood (the book) ended without telling you who the wolf is, but it did give you a date that you could find a bonus chapter online...well that date is next week. As much as I wanted to know who the wolf was at the end of the book, I think it definitely gave the movie an nice edge.

The movie mostly stuck to the same story line as the book but it picks up where the book left off and we find out who the wolf is. My lips are sealed, but I will say that my guess was wrong!

Overall, I enjoyed the book a little more than the movie, but the movie definitely did not disappoint! I highly recommend both!

Because I Said So; Nights in Rodanthe Movie Reviews

I just watched 'Because I Said So'. I will definitely be adding this movie to my DVD collection. The whole movie revolves around a meddling mother and her three daughters. It's a great laugh out loud movie and it's sweet and romantic at the same time. I look forward to seeing it again.

Hhmmm, how to say this without spoiling this movie...

This is a touching and emotional romance rather than the comedic romance that I was expecting. Don't get me wrong this is a great movie and one that I will definitely watch again, but I will be watching it with tissues close at hand the next time around!
