"Techno" has been an extremely open-ended concept for Stroboscopic Artefacts, the Berlin-based imprint responsible for some of the genre's most wide-ranging excursions of late. Dadub, the duo who masters each of the label's releases and have contributed a handful of their own since 2011, truly embody the label's commitment to doing things differently. So while Daniele Antezza and Giovanni Conti have released on a handful of experimental internet labels over the years, Dadub have found their calling among the shifting rhythms and ambient excursions of Stroboscopic Artefacts. Pounding and hard-edged, Dadub's recently released debut LP, You Are Eternity, is unquestionably a techno record. But as its beats and textures tangle in the darkness, you're left wondering if the word really nails what they've about.
There's certainly some four-to-the-floor on RA.356, but it's not all Dadub have up their sleeves. Not surprisingly, a blacker-than-black thread runs through the 40-plus tracks the duo have spliced, mashed and molded into an hour-and-a-half statement of purpose.

No other artist typifies the wide-open playing field that electronic music has become in recent years better than Modeselektor. A bold claim, surely, but one that comes backed with plenty of evidence now that they have left the BPitch mothership and begun to literally put their money where their taste is with two record labels, Monkeytown and 50 Weapons.

The duo have released dubstep, techno, house, electro and whatever you want to call Anstam to the wider world. Many are artists that have already made a name elsewhere. (Their 50 Weapons of Choice compilation last year seemed liked a cherry-picking of the latest and greatest of bass music.) But just as many aren't. The aforementioned Anstam, Phon.o and Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka are hardly household names, even in homes that count post-dubstep blogs as essential reading. Those three have albums on the way (with Anstam's released just last week) on 50 Weapons. So does Addison Groove, at the end of March 2012.

All of the above are reasons why 50 Weapons is one of the most vital imprints around at the moment. But there are plenty more. To gain an insight into what makes the imprint so special, we caught up with the family to ask them to explain 50 Weapons and its appeal. (More...)

This month's label showcase is from Phon.o, one of the many artists that make up the 50 Weapons imprint family. He takes us on an assured ride through the label's catalogue with frequent stops in Monkeytown (and other imprints) along the way.

Tracklist:
Anstam - Watching The Ships Go Down - 50 Weapons
Dark Sky - The Lick - 50 Weapons
SBTRKT - Right Thing To Do - Young Turks
Benjamin Damage - Zeppelin – 50 Weapons

RA.277 Cosmin TRG

Image
RA.277   Cosmin TRG

It's actually kind of sad that Cosmin TRG's exploration of genres has been a talking point—can't an artist, you know, do more than one thing?—but such is life. The Romanian producer was a dubstep/garage dude when he started out back in 2007, hopped over to house for a bit and is now residing in techno country. One by-product of this restlessness is the name Cosmin TRG (or TRG as he was initially known) has adorned many a leading label these past four years—Hessle Audio, [NakedLunch], Tempa, Immerse Records, Hotflush, Hemlock and Rush Hour being merely a selection of them. The latest to put a welcoming arm around him was Modeselektor's Fifty Weapons. Separat / Izolat, released at the beginning of 2011, signalled Cosmin's intention to get truly stuck into the tough stuff, while it seemed the dream had been fully realised when it was announced in June that a full-length offering was in the works for Fifty Weapons.

Try as it might Simulat wasn't quite able to shake off Cosmin's roaming past—which is exactly what made it so great; RA.277 suffers the same affliction with exactly the same outcome. This is techno but not quite as you know.

RA.276 Alva Noto

Image

Alva Noto is a pseudonym of German sound/visual artist Carsten Nicolai. It's difficult to bring into focus the breadth of Nicolai's achievements in the various disciplines he's been involved with since the early '90s, but he is perhaps most well-known in music circles as a co-founder of the groundbreaking Raster-Noton imprint, and his collaborative work with Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. The pair has proffered several full-length pieces through Raster-Noton in the past decade, and Nicolai has been no less prolific elsewhere, releasing around ten albums over that time period either solo or in tandem with artists like Opiate and fellow Raster-Noton founders Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider. As with most things Nicolai turns his hand to, the music of Alva Noto is characterized by fierce experimentation. Wild packs of glitches, tone generators, looped oscillators and communication signals are tamed and assembled into sprawling ambient passages and/or rhythmic explorations, the latest of which, univrs, sees release on October 17th.

On RA.276 Nicolai somehow captures the breadth of the Alva Noto sound world in a 51-miute set that moulds the music of Fennesz, Andy Stott, M.I.A., Steve Reich, Nine Inch Nails, Byetone and Donnacha Costello into a coherent whole.

RA.255 Lucy

RA.255 Lucy
@StroboscopicArt
@lucy_official

A dark exploration of rhythm from the Stroboscopic Artefacts boss.

Lucy and his Stroboscopic Artefacts label are arguably the most important additions to the global techno scene in the past two years. You may have known the Italian producer (Luca Mortellaro) from his work for Meerestief Records and Perspectiv in the latter half of the '00s but it was at the end of 2009, and the founding of SA, that his name truly began to ring out across the scene. The Berlin-based Lucy assembled a coterie of artists who, much like himself, were indebted to sounds from far outside the techno canon, and went about releasing around 15 separate examples of this vision during 2010 alone. The culmination of these endeavours surfaced earlier this year in the form of Lucy's debut LP, Wordplay for Working Bees, an album RA's Andrew Ryce described at the time as "one of the most personal, affecting and diverse techno albums since Shed's The Traveller."

It's in the spaces between genres that Lucy seems to thrive and his mix for us expertly stalks these shadowy corridors—at times it's unclear whether you zoning into techno, dubstep, ambient or something else entirely.

RA.250 Heinrich Mueller

Image
RA.250 Heinrich Mueller
DrexciyaResearchLab Blog

The Drexciyan producer records his first ever mix.
There's a comment on Discogs that describes Drexciya as "America's answer to Kraftwerk," which might just be the most succinct way of putting it. Between 1992 and 2002 Heinrich Mueller (who was then referred to by his given name, Gerald Donald) and James Stinson recorded some of the most advanced and influential electro/techno ever to come out of Detroit. And they were certainly the most enigmatic. Even at the point of Stinson's untimely passing in 2002, next to nothing was known about the group—they seldom spoke to the press, were never photographed and never performed live. Mueller went on to form, or continue with, a number of other projects, exploring a vast range of sonic textures and concepts in doing so. Dopplereffekt, Der Zyklus and Arpanet are just a few of these names, while the most recent of these, Zwischenwelt, are on the cusp of releasing the otherworldly Paranormale Aktivitat long-player.

The group is made up of vocalist Beta Evers and producers Susana Correia and Penélope Martin, the latter of whom has collaborated with Mueller on this, his first ever mix. We say the word "mix" but don't go expecting a slick DJ set. This is Mueller and Martin exploring the entire "interworld" and presenting it based on its most important facet: the music.

RA.245 Traversable Wormhole

The New York techno veteran enters the wormhole.
Adam X is pleased with himself, and rightly so. While every man and his dog were extolling the virtues of minimal during the last decade, the US veteran producer was sitting quietly on the sidelines with only his tastes for company. That may sound overly dramatic, but let's just say that Adam Mitchell stood firmly by the harder techno and industrial he was pushing during the '90s and is now reaping the rewards. That said, it did take an adroit name change to properly reconnect with the scene. Traversable Wormhole was established to put an anonymous front on his music: Mitchell felt that DJs and music buyers harboured preconceptions over his '00s "industrial/EBM" output. The TW limited pressings flew instantly off shelves. Mitchell remained tight-lipped, however, releasing five parts of the series in the second half of 2009 before casually unveiling himself in an interview with us at the start of 2010. Chris Liebing's CLR imprint picked up the releases for a five-part remix project—Surgeon, Marcel Dettmann and Funtion were among the talent—before compiling the originals to CD.

Mitchell started out in Brooklyn during the early '90s, running the Sonic Groove record store before founding a label of the same name back in 1995—his years of experience are brought to bear on this assured encapsulation of his range: from murky ambient textures to hostile industrial, right through to straight-up techno bangers.

RA.222 Bruno Pronsato (Live)

Image
RA.222 Bruno Pronsato

Steven Ford shows off his groovy minimalist style with a special live set for the RA podcast.

The journey from speed metal drummer to minimal techno producer isn't exactly a common one, but it's exactly the music path that a certain Steven Ford has forged over the past 20 years. After leaving his Voice Of Reason bandmates back in Texas and making a move out west to Seattle, Ford became increasingly interested in computer-based music and electronic minimalism, steadily learning the tools that have made him such an accomplished producer.

His early years in the electronic music scene saw him split his output between two different monikers. While his now defunct Bobby Karate pseudonym explored Ford's more abstract side, his more dance floor-focused work came out under the Bruno Pronsato name, and was promptly picked up by respected labels as Musique Risquee, Philpot and Orac. A move to Berlin opened up yet more opportunities for Ford, leading to collaborations with both Sammy Dee and Daze Maxim—the former as Half Hawaii and the latter as The Others—and a more suitable hub to take his live show around Europe and beyond.

The last couple of years have seen Ford start up his thesongsays record label, which debuted with his deftly executed 39-minute Nico-sampling composition, "The Make Up The Break Up." RA's Peter Chambers saw fit to give both that 12-inch and also his sophomore album, Why Can't We Be Like Us, rare perfect scores upon their release, and with a new album on the way, fans won't have to wait too long to hear more of Ford's liquid percussion and mindbending sound design.

RA.221 Shed

Image
RA.221 Shed

The Hard Wax and Ostgut Ton man lays down an energetic, hour-long mix for this week's RA podcast.

As far as contemporary Berlin-based house and techno producers go, you don't get much better than René Pawlowitz. When he's not spending his time behind the counter at the city's legendary Hard Wax record store, he's busy conjuring up all manner of material in his studio, taking inspiration from classic Detroit and Berlin techno while infusing elements of hardcore, breakbeat, dubstep and ambient along the way. Although the majority of his output is released under the Shed banner, Pawlowitz has diversified his sound with a number of different pseudonyms. His white label offerings as Wax and EQD have become essential selections for fans of rugged Teutonic techno, while he's also turned his hand to 140bpm bass music with his work as The Panamax Project.

Although René has garnered a reputation for his prolific and consistent approach club-oriented 12-inch singles, he's also proved his mettle when it comes to creating larger bodies of work. His debut album came in at the #1 spot in our top albums of 2008, with RA's Will Lynch championing its "lustrous aesthetic, oblique rhythms and coherent diversity," so seeing as his sophomore full-length—entitled The Traveller—is due to hit the shops later this month, so we thought that it'd be the ideal time to let Pawlowitz demonstrate his idiosyncratic vision of how techno should be.

RA.219 Cio D'or

Image
RA.219 Cio D'or

Cologne's queen of hypnotic minimalism lays down a trippy warm-up session on this week's RA podcast.

She may have only found international recognition in the latter half of the past decade, but Cio Dorbandt is a veteran of the electronic music scene. Throughout the '90s, she could often be found spinning records at Munich's Ultraschall club, which became a popular spot for German clubbers during the country's techno revolution, before deciding to hone her vision of an ideal club night with her own Nachtwind parties. At the same time, Dorbandt began to produce under the tutelage of techno stalwart Richard Bartz, and moved to Cologne to be closer to the labels that embraced her emotive and melodic take on the minimal techno sound.

The demise of both Karmarouge and the Zurich-based Motoguzzi imprints left Dorbandt looking for a permanent home to house her work, and in a way she's gone full circle by allying herself with Munich's Prologue label, who issued her Die Faser full-length at the tail end of last year. Its mix of hypnotic but rhythmically driving techno and tripped-out ambience distills many of Dorbandt's electronic passions into one consciously narrative whole, and the same could be said for her RA podcast.

RA.199 House Of House

Image
RA.199 House Of House

The NYC house duo rushes to paradise on this week's RA podcast.

It may not have been the originator of the genre, but New York certainly has its fair share of house music heritage. As House Of House, Olivier Spencer and Saheer Umar are one of the latest acts to take their place in NYC's house lineage, causing a major stir last year with their dance floor-slaying debut single, "Rushing To Paradise (Walking These Streets)." Its slick synth pulses, cascading pianos and visceral climax made sure that it found its way into the boxes of DJs looking for a dance floor track with plenty of emotional clout, and our panel of critics here at RA couldn't get enough, placing it at #20 in our Top Tracks Of 2009 poll.

When they both get behind the decks as House Of House, though, don't expect a straight up set of deep house. As this week's podcast proves, Spencer and Umar are a wild and diverse pair when they get down to mixing, managing to traverse from organic house through to dark minimal techno and back, even managing to work in a bit of pitched-down dubstep. We caught up with the duo by e-mail to ask them about the mix, their recent activities and what revellers can expect when House Of House hit their local clubbing establishment.

RA.198 Scuba vs SCB

Image
RA.198 Scuba vs SCB

The Hotflush Recordings boss dons his dubstep and techno hats for the RA podcast.

Paul Rose is one of the most influential figures in the world of dubstep. As label head of Hotflush Recordings, he's helped release work from Benga, Shackleton and, of course, Joy Orbison and his RA #1 single of 2009, "Hyph Mngo." Events-wise, he's one of the masterminds behind Sub:stance, a night that has brought the likes of Mala, D-Bridge, Scion and Kode9 to Berlin's Berghain. And, under the Scuba name, he's produced two full-lengths of remarkably diverse work that reflect his wide-ranging taste and machine mastery.

The forthcoming Triangulation album showcases Scuba's talent for all things bass-oriented. But his recently birthed SCB moniker has reflected another huge interest of Rose's, that of the four-four variety. Described recently as "Balearic techno with a rainy soul" by RA's Max Bacharach, Rose's SCB project has the same focus on emotional body music. It's simply filtered through a different tempo. On his RA podcast, you'll get to hear both, as Rose takes us through the world of Scuba and SCB in what seems like a very short 83 minutes.

RA.190 DJ Stingray

Image

190 DJ Stingray

The Urban Tribe leader flexes his turntable talents on this week's RA podcast.

Sherard Ingram has been an active member in Detroit's electronic music community for nearly 25 years now, stretching back all the way to his first release as NASA on cult Detroit imprint Express Records alongside Scan 7's Trackmaster Lou. Never shy of a collaboration, Ingram spent much of the '90s teaming up with Carl Craig, Anthony 'Shake' Shakir and Kenny Dixon Jr. to create a rich downtempo sound as Urban Tribe on James Lavelle's Mo Wax label, with culminated in the release of 1998's much-lauded The Collapse of Modern Culture album. He was then recruited to be the tour DJ for Drexciya in their final days, taking to the decks as DJ Stingray and masking his face from the audience, something he continues to do for all of his DJ appearances.

In recent years, his production work—as DJ Stingray, Mystic Tribe A.I., and Urban Tribe—has focused much more on his solo talents, and is now grounded in the futuristic electro style that is associated with his DJ sets. If anything, Ingram's skills behind the desk are improving with age, as demonstrated by last year's Social Engineering EP, which contained "tracks that transcend genre and time" according to RA's Richard Brophy. 2009 also saw Ingram launch his Micron Audio label with the digitally released First Wave collection of tracks from Annie Hall, Mariska, Kon and himself amongst others, and it looks like 2010 will be a busy year for the imprint, what with the vinyl release of First Wave along with a multitude of additional 12-inches. We caught up with Sherard by e-mail to ask him about the mix, his thoughts about the electro genre and his collaborations with Drexciyan compadre Gerald Donald, AKA Heinrich Mueller.

RA.187 Tensnake

Image

187 Tensnake

Hamburg's Marco Niemerski brings in a new decade with a collection of house and disco.

It seemed like any other year for Marco Niemerski in 2009. The man known as Tensnake put out one single, released a few records by others on his Mirau imprint and had a DJ gig here and there. The difference? Each of them was among the finest of the past 365 days. Niemerski's single for Running Back netted two Top 50 tracks of 2009, he further introduced us to rising star Iron Curtis via Mirau, and his sets have ensured him a spate of repeat performances scheduled for 2010 in some of the most celebrated clubs in the world. Needless to say, 2009 was unlike any other year for Tensnake.

It's a success that is well deserved though, as the Hamburg-based DJ and producer has worked hard at creating the sort of electronic disco that stands out from his peers. Building up melodies that take far longer than the usual eight bars to unfold, his productions sound less like tracks and more like songs. It's something that he also favors here on his RA podcast, a collection of disco, house and fireworks that should hopefully provide—as Niemerski puts it—an ideal soundtrack to a silly New Year's Eve.

RA.183 Jan Krueger

RA.183 Jan Krueger

The Hello?Repeat co-founder mixes up this week's RA podcast.

The general consensus these days is that it's extremely difficult to make a name for yourself on the international DJing circuit without also being a producer. Hello?Repeat boss Jan Krueger is one of the few that has successfully proven otherwise.

His passion for house and techno music began in the early '90s when he was still living in his birthplace of Düsseldorf, and as the decade progressed he found himself more and more immersed in the scene, working in a local record shop while hosting the likes of Daniel Bell, Matthew Herbert and Steve Bug at his parties. It was around this time that he met prolific producer Marcus Manowski, AKA Daze Maxim, with the pair collaborating on a set of minimal house tracks that would become Krueger's sole released material. A job as sales manager for Hamburg-based distribution powerhouse Word & Sound would ensure that he kept his finger on the pulse of electronic music, and it was through this position that he was able to start the Hello?Repeat label alongside Manowski.

Krueger has recently left Word & Sound and moved to Berlin in order to focus on the label and his DJing career, already holding residencies at the city's Watergate club as well as at NYC techno institution The Bunker. Jan is known as an afterhours specialist, and this is exactly the style he's gone for on this week's RA podcast, working a slinky and hypnotic minimal house groove over the course of ninety minutes. RA.181 Simon Caldwell

 RA.181 Simon Caldwell

One of Sydney's finest steps up with a mix of techno, soul, funk and house.

Simon Caldwell is what you'd call a DJ's DJ. A fixture in the Australian party circuit for nearly two decades, Caldwell can play sets in nearly any genre that you'd care to name—or all of them at once, if the party requires it. As part of Sydney's Mad Racket crew—a group that has brought the likes of Moodymann, Andrew Weatherall, John Tejada, Jamie Lidell and more to the city—he has to constantly be ready to read and react to what the crowd wants and needs.

Caldwell learned the value of diversity early on in his career, taking on a radio show in Sydney in 1991 that specialized in house, jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop which soon led to a residency at a night called All Funked Up at the Bentley Bar. Caldwell soon held residencies on six of seven weeknights at the venue, working in a variety of genres to ensure that the Bentley's sound was never stale. He's done the same at some of Sydney's biggest venues, Home and Chinese Laundry, as well. And on his RA podcast, Caldwell does the same as always, showcasing the many sides of his musical personality, moving effortlessly through dubby house, tech house, funk, acid, ambient, soul and disco. It's a nearly ninety minute mix, and Caldwell takes advantage of every minute of it, proving that he can handle almost any DJing situation you throw him into.

RA.180 Dor

Image

RA.180 Dor

Laid's label manager works the wax on this week's RA podcast.

At a time when the phrase "digital exclusive" seems to be an all too common occurrence amongst house and techno imprints, Hamburg's Dial imprint have decided to go against the grain, spawning a new sub-label focusing strictly on vinyl-only releases. The man behind the venture is Berlin-based Israeli, Dor Levi, who first came into contact with the Dial crew while he was living and throwing club nights in Tel Aviv a couple of years ago. Named as such due to their low cover charge, his Cheap Friday parties brought Dial mainstays like Efdemin, Carsten Jost, Lawrence and Pantha Du Prince to his home city, with Dor always expressing a desire to have them stay for a few days rather than flying straight in and out.

It was during these extended stays that their friendship blossomed, and when Dor expressed his desire to take his DJing further, the collective were happy to oblige, offering their help and support if Dor made the move to Berlin. It goes without saying that he jumped at the chance, becoming part of the extended Dial family and regularly getting invited to join them behind the decks at their Panorama Bar residency. Their working relationship was taken one step further with the launch of the Laid imprint this year, which has so far featured deep house rollers from Rick Wade, RNDM and John Roberts, offering a fresh take on the American house sound of yore. This week's RA podcast is only Dor's second recorded mix (his first won him a DJing spot for Tel Aviv's Pacotek club night), and sees him showcase his influences from both sides of the Atlantic. We caught up with Dor via e-mail to ask him about the mix, his home country and Laid's vinyl-only stance.
