I haven't been able to get out and about for a while. My world is a bit smaller these days, and viewed through the windows of my home.

Not a bad view at all I'd say!

Christmas Colours

A post for Macro Monday/The Creative Exchange/ i heart macro/Ruby Tuesday

Image
Colours are the smiles of nature
~Leigh Hunt

The flowers of this poinsettia (green buds) are less than 1\8th of an inch in size, so my Raynox DCR-250 conversion macro lens did wonders on this shot!

The brightly coloured parts of a poinsettia are not the plant's flowers. They are actually bracts, or modified leaves surrounding the real flowers, which are the (3-5 mm) greenish-yellow buds in the centre of a bunch.

Freckle Berries (Solomon's Seal)

 Solomon's Seal Berries (False)
(Smilacina racemosa)
False Solomon's Seal is a lovely woodland perennial native to North America. Unlike True Solomon's Seal berries, the berries of this plant are not poisonous. In late fall the berries turn brilliant red and are eaten by birds and wildlife.

Hemlock Lacquered Polypore- Macro Monday/Ruby Tuesday

I was fascinated by the wide variety of fungi present in the forest up at the cottage.  This is my favourite species.

The Hemlock Lacquered Polypore
(Ganoderma tsuage)
Image

The fruiting body which can be up to 30cm (11inches) in diameter, develop in a single season. They begin growth in June as soft white and orange knobs, soon fan out, and both the stalk and upper surface become heavily lacquered in shades of red and burgundy.

Image

These fungi belong to the Polypore species, often known as, shelf or bracket fugi. Although not all species form shelf-shaped bodies, the commonality exists in the fact they have tough or woody fruiting bodies, that produce spores in tubes or pores found on the underside.

Doll's Eyes

For Macro Monday/Ruby Tuesday

Click the pic to enlarge
Image
Beneath the early autumn canopy of turning trees, the doll's eye plant stands out on the forest floor, with striking white berries, each centred with a black dot, on a thick, deep red stalk. Named for the resemblance to the eyes of old fashioned porcelin dolls, this plant is pure poison. Also known as baneberry, all parts of this plant can cause ill effects in humans if ingested. This is one plant that does not follow the old folk adage that any berries eaten by birds are okay for humans. Ruffled grouse, robins, wood thrushes and other songbirds eat these berries with no consequences.

Fuzzy Wuzzy - Macro Monday/Ruby Tuesday

Hickory tussock moth caterpillar
Image

Don't touch this cute little fuzzy muffin, contact with the poisonous hairs or spines can cause a painful itchy rash, similar to poison ivy.

I chose this as my  FAVORITE PHOTO OF THE WEEK because I was happy this little guy posed so nicely that I didn't have to touch him!

The Alien Has Landed

Another example of the weird and wonderful fungi found in the forests up at the cottage, in the Haliburton Highlands of Ontario.

Image

This is a Rosy Russula, most often found in mixed wood forests of Red Maple, Balsm Fir, and spruce trees. This mushroom is a favorite food for Red squirrels. They carry them up trees, and hang them from branch forks, or stuff them in cracks in the bark. There, the mushrooms will dry out, and be preserved for eating later in the winter.

Going Buggy - Macro/Mellow Yellow Monday/Ruby Tuesday

Click on the pic to enlarge...take a look at the bugs!

Image

My neighbour's vine trails over the fence. It has beautiful blossoms. I noticed today that the usual abundant blooms are sparse, and many have turned brown, although it has just started flowering. Going in for a closer look, I found out why...it's infested with aphids,  visible upon closer inspection. Ewwwwwwwwww....
