New Cycling Map!

Image
After years of procrastination, I've finished my second Charleston-area bicycling map. These maps feature smaller, low-traffic roads that are good for road biking. Download them here.

Backlit Saturn

Image
No, I didn't shoot this.
I'm always telling people to try shooting stuff backlit and see what happens. It can be more interesting than front lighting. Here's an example from the ever-fascinating site "Astronomy Picture of the Day".

Deep Glamour, from Virginia Postrel

Image
Noted libertarian author Virginia Postrel (former editor of Reason Magazine) has started a new blog called Deep Glamour which, I'm happy to say is featuring some work by me, in a post and also on the masthead. Postrel's booksImage (The Future and Its Enemies & The Substance of Style) deal with the economics of change along with the economic impact of good design. I've long linked to her Dynamist Blog but this new one promises to be more interesting to me as it will deal exclusively with design and style.

Obama in West Virginia

Image

My friend Brooke Brown got some up-close-and-personal shots of Obama's visit to Charleston. Included is a photo showing that Annie Leibovitz shoots with her left eye like I do. It's like being left-handed... cameras are designed for righties. Your nose is always smashing into things and pushing buttons that you didn't want pushed.

Watch these tv shows...

... about photography on the web. The Prodig.org site runs a mailing list forum that I've participated in for years, but that's not what this is about. They have 3 episodes of the BBC program "The Genius of Photography" on their blog. I recommend it. It's partly about the history of photography but it also gets into the art and philosophy of photography. Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3.

The words seemed particularly easy to me, but still, I'm surprised my score was that high.
