Adventure Time!

No, this post has nothing to do with Finn and Jake, besides the fact that their picture is gloriously posted below.

Image

This post however, has more to do with my past weekend, amidst the heavy rain and glum. The adventure began on Saturday morning, where for my work training, I was sent, together with my colleague, to an indoor rock climbing centre in Wangsa Maju called Mad Monkeyz. It's a pretty small shop lot, but packed to the brim with walls you can climb on. After six hours there, I am now a certified Level One Sport Climber, and am allowed to belay for top-rope climbers.

Image

The walls there are only about 4m high, but don't let it's short stature fool you into thinking that it is easy! Compensating for what they lack in height, they excel in challenge, both mentally and physically. There are many excruciating paths you can choose to traverse across the walls, and even ceilings! Definitely a fun place to visit if you're looking for both a mental and physical challenge.

Image

Scaling walls is a hungry business, and so for dinner, I was at the Overseas Restaurant to celebrate the 50th birthday anniversary* of a dear family friend. 50 years and she doesn't look much different from when I first met her about 20 years ago. One thing I really admired was that at the dinner, her father made good use of the opportunity to share the gospel with the guests. Very, very brave of him!

Image

At the dinner, I met up with the birthday girl's sister and brother, who are my old fishing 'kakis'. It goes without saying that somebody casually mentioned the word 'fish', and we ended up going for a all-night fishing expedition to this Natural Exotic Fish Fishing Pond in Rawang. For RM100, you can fish for three hours, or you could pay RM100 for two hours and try reel in a jackpot catch. They said that there were giant fish to be caught, and they were absolutely serious about it. Here's me with my 8kg catch - the biggest I have ever gotten. Ever. Amongst the four of us, we managed to reel in another three more giant Redtail Catfish (Hemibagrus wyckioides) by 5am. Unable to stay awake any longer, we left quite reluctantly. So there ended my adventure.

*I say birthday anniversary because you technically have only one birthday. No prizes for guessing when that was. The ones you celebrate every year, would then naturally be your birthday anniversaries.
**Farshid, if you're reading this, no worries. The fish were not killed, but allowed to recuperate, then were subsequently returned into the pond.

Surprise, surprise!

Image
My Fishing Buddies
My landlord's daughter and her friend Pat found this little hidden pond in the fringes of Desa Park City. They made a trip there the day before, but didn't get much besides two juvenile toman.

Hoping to get in on the fun as well, I decided to join them today. We got to the lake at about close to 1100, and the weather was really sunny. I think I've got quite burnt. That pond is really quite something! You can actually see the fish leaping out of the water, and swimming around. There'll be the occasional terrapin breaking the surface too.

Image
Catch of the Day!
This time, we brought earthworms for bait. The fish didn't quite seem to fancy the worms we brought, so I tried luring them in with some meal. Next thing I know, something's gently pulling my line taut. Seeing the slow movement of the line, I didn't think much of it, and reeled in anyway. Several tugs on the line, and I didn't seem to feel like anything was on the hook. Strangely enough, as the bait end came in closer, I could see the silhouette of a fish breaking the surface, and this fella popped out!

However, with closer inspection, I noticed that the line looked a little funny - it was all rusty brown. Then I realised it wasn't my line at all! Turns out somebody had hooked this fish, and thinking the line got stuck, cut the line. That or the fish broke the line. Either ways, the line trailing from that fish's mouth had got ensnared in my hook, allowing me to reel in the biggest fish I've ever caught.

Image

After reeling in my catch, I was quite satisfied, so I didn't really try for any more. Instead, I took a stroll to the opposite side of the pond where we had seen plenty of piscine activity. Standing on the edge of the stone bridge, I could see plenty of fish, and proof that my fish wasn't the biggest in the pond! I'm definitely marking this spot down as potential fishing area. The only problem is the security guards... may have to pay them off. haha.

Painfully Slow Progress

The past two weeks have been insane. I am now chronically sleep deprived. It must be some cruel joke of the university admins to put all the assignment due dates in the same 2 weeks. _φ(・_・

Image
Batu Dam Scenery
Still, despite all that insane work hours, one has to still take a break to enjoy the finer details of life, no? Even if it's at the equally insane times of the day. Hehe.
So on Wednesday night, my landlady's daughter brought back a haruan from Batu Dam. Now, I've only been there once before and caught barely anything. Seeing that prize catch, i had to go when I heard she was going again the next day!
Screw the fact that I only had two hours of sleep. I needed a break real badly. Leaving the house at 0645, I got there in time to join them. It was really good to be able to spend some time in the open with fresh air and beautiful scenery (if you keep your eyes away from the littered water). Pity there was no thrill of a catch to end the trip.

On a, well, distraction related side note, I've finally finished painting my monk. I think I'll call him 'Wu Zheng', never mind about the Chinese characters yet. Haha. Here are some pictures of several stages of completion.

Here's progress as of Thursday
ImageImage
Here's the completed figure, sans base art.

I've also managed to finish Doulos' figurine of Paul the Paladin. Went for a Boltgun Metal, Mithril Silver, and Shining Gold combo, with Enchanted Blue for the cloth. I think it looks pretty good - just need to touch up the finer details on the cape and its trimmings, also the shield, and other finer details.
So as a celebration for five figures painted, here's a picture of all of the together!

Teach a man to fish~

So after my trip to Pulau Besar, we were driving home when my dad asked us:

'So what have you learned from this fishing trip?'
He was met with silence, so he gave us the answers instead:
1. Never aim for the fish you can see - you'll never get it.
2. You usually get what you don't expect.
3. What kind of fish you get depends on where you fish,
4. ... on what bait you use.
5. Never aim for the fish that can be seen - everybody else will be aiming for it too.
After a while, I realised he wasn't talking about fish. Haha. Sneaky dad.
Still, the apex of the joke was still this:
6. Never bring your mother fishing - she'll scare away all the fish.
Very true, both literally and metaphorically.

lol.

The Prodigal Son Returns

It felt like a very clichéd introduction to an Enid Blyton adventure story. It was the holidays again, and I sure was a pleased as punch (how one can be feeling optimistic like a bowl of cordial, I have no idea, but that's just English for you). I hadn't seen my family, especially my siblings for more than four months, and now that my brother was scheduled to be shipped of to the Army, I was pretty intent on spending time with him.

The first four days I spent back home was at a CF committee planning retreat, nothing much to write about there. Just nine people cramped around a table trying to make plans for the rest of the year.

The fun comes after that =) Yesterday was our Mother's Day celebration since we wanted to beat the Mother's Day crowd, the one which comes when the rest of Melaka suddenly thinks that eating out at a very expensive restaurant is the only way of displaying filial piety. One last big family event where everyone is around before good old Shimri is shipped off to Sungai Besi.

Shimri and I had been planning for a little fishing trip ever since I got back and got myself a nice little rod & reel. Due to last night's occasion, we had to delay it till today. At the same time, Mom thought that it would be a good idea to make it a family holiday, and with Mom being Mom, it was as good as her passing a royal decree.

We manged to actually get to the pier on time despite turning back to get Dad a pair of slippers (fancy him going to the beach in his loafers...that old man. lol) and Mom a pair of slippers which still had its soles attached. The boat ride to Pulau Besar is not cheap, I tell you, not cheap! It was RM14 per person for a two way ticket, about the price of my KL-Melaka bus fare.
Upon reaching the island, we started our little hike to Shimri's fishing spot. Cutting through a graveyard, and some jungle, we got to this brilliantly blue cove you could ever imagine. The photographs my sister took definitely does not do justice to the beauty of the place, seriously. It was just amazing.
Shimri and I plopped ourselves nicely on a big rock and started casting, while Mom and Shirinnah splashed around in the shallows. Dad tried reliving his childhood and went of gallivanting into the woods (He did discover an abandoned hotel, so I suppose he enjoyed himself).

The rest of the morning was divided between these activities:
1) Swimming out to free our lines (Shimri did most of that. I'm the sort who would rather pay him to do it. Hehe. But I did go in once, kay.)
2) Changing spots (We got fed-up of having to free our lines from the rocks every time we cast.)
3) Waiting...
4) More waiting...
5) And even more waiting
6) Throwing back tiny fish
Shimri and I would have stayed longer to fish, but Shirinnah said that she had unfinished homework (which was in that insanely ginormous bag she made us lug around), so we had to pack up at noon.
Trudging back to the pier is no fun task, especially when you've finished all your water and have been sitting in the sun all morning, while carrying an icebox with fish in it. It's worse when you have a pair of parents (especially Mom, who is mortally afraid of climbing rocks - up, down, across, you name it) who don't walk as fast as when they did when you were five. You have to wait for them. I suppose that's good training for patience and unconditional love. So what if they make the journey longer? It means you get to spend more time with them =)

The line got caught. Eventually we had to leave that spot 'cos Shimri dived in on time too many and scared all the fish away.

Mine: Don't know what it is, but it looks nice deep fried =)
