19th Century Timeline Notebook Gives a Great Catholic Perspective of the 1800s

ImageExamine the events of history with this 19th Century Timeline Notebook lovingly created by Shell of Thinking Love, No Twaddle Blog. The nine-page resource serves to share world history as well as Catholic events from the 1800s with a running list of historical events - including the birth or death of specific saints, apparitions from our Blessed Mother, and more.

There are some very neat features in this resource.

-Spaces are available to create your own little notebook area to add additional events of the time period.
-Catholic events are highlighted in blue.
-Beautiful artwork is used in the backgrounds of many of the pages.
-A blank page is included for other events you may want to include immediately before or after the 19th Century.

This could serve as a wonderful addition to any history study or program.

We will definitely be adding this resource to our studies next year.  Thanks so much for your generosity and energy, Shell.

Blessings,
Kalei

Just completed: Our Little Timeline of the Old Testament

Image
Start learning history from the very beginning

When do you teach that history begins in your homeschool or CCD class?  In our little homeschool, we teach that history begins at the very beginning of time.  The start of everything begins with God's creative glory; God created everything out of nothing.  To help teach this awesome concept to our children, we use the Old Testament, of course.

We have had such great response to our Life of Christ Timeline both from our own children as well as online visitors that we decided to do a new timeline to go with the history of the Old Testament of the Bible.

Our new timeline goes with the first half of the book, Child's Bible HistoryImage by Rev. F.J. Knecht and covers some of the earliest historical occurrences.  You will find that the author focuses on 28 historical stories from the Bible, most of which are contained in the first few books of the Bible.  This read is suitable for grades 3-5 and so many of the events and topics are suited specifically for them. We have created our timeline to accompany this work although it can very easily be used independently of it.Image
Child's Bible History
This resource includes the timeline lines, the pieces for the timeline and a references sheet.  A unique feature of this timeline is that we have included the scripture references for each of the events highlighted.  Younger students may simply just put the timeline up and add the pieces in order.  Older learners may want to look up the passages for discussion.  Some events require a bit of reading - say a chapter or so, while other passages are quite short.

To use this resource simply download and print out the sheets.  (We recommend using heavier bond paper for the lines and regular paper for the actual pieces.)  As you read and discuss the individual stories from the Knecht book or the scripture suggestions on the timeline pieces, affix the timeline piece to the purple lines.  In general, there will be three pieces per line and 28 in total.  Feel free to modify as needed.  Perhaps you want to join the lines to make them six pieces wide or simply glue just the pieces into a history notebook - that is just fine too.  Flexibility is one of the most beautiful things about homeschooling.

Our smaller timelines are not overwhelming and are perfect for those of us who are short on space, live in an apartment or simply want to focus on one theme at a time.  Thinking about where you may want to put this timeline?  You may want to affix your timeline to any of a number of areas in your home:

A kitchen wall - great conversation spark for supper or tea time
The wall in your homeschooling area - great reference tool
Your child's bedroom wall or door - decorate with your faith
The inside of the bathroom door - for your captive audience
A large piece of poster board - for a more portable timeline.

Go to our Little Timeline of the Old Testament page now.
See all of our Timeline collections now.

As with the other timelines, we also have accompanying notebook pages to go with each of the 28 stories.  They are in our traditional That Resource Site style of four line spacing options to meet the needs of every aged learner as well as options to draw your own picture, draw the scene, or use the picture provided.  Each set is twelve pages.

We hope that many find these resources very helpful.  We hope to offer a few more resources to accompany these Bible stories if time allows.

Free notebooking packets to accompany our latest timeline project are waiting for you!!

Our timeline projects are a clear-cut favourite amongst our visitours.  To help bring even more meaning to them we have tried to include go-along printable resources.  In our latest offering called, The  Little Timeline of Composers, we have included the timeline, the image pieces, and reference sheet.  We also included composer biography learning cards that children can create and collect on their own.

To help further bring this resource to life, we have now added notebooking sheet packets for each composer on the timeline.  Each packet includes 21 pages of various layouts, styles and line spacing options.  Sheets highlight the composer as well as the time period of their works - Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Late Romantic, Impressionist, or Modern.  A matching image from the timeline is included on some of the layouts too.  Some layouts are especially useful for listing major compositions or creating a timeline for the life or accomplishments of each composer.

We will begin this study in our own little homeschool next week incorporating reading about composers, listening to their actual works and getting to know each, one by one.  We are looking forward to delightful learning.

As a side note:
If you are looking for neat way to help your children learn about a few of the most famous composers, then you might want to check out the Classical Kids series.  We own most of them and have loved using them over the years.  For some children this will really bring the composers and their music to life.  Each tale features a specific composer and a sampling of their work set to an interesting historical fiction plot incorporating children as some of the main characters.  You can order them in tangible format of CD or even a DVD movie.  Some are now available for instant MP3 download.  Here are some of Imageour favourites.

A Must Have Timeline Featuring the Composers

ImageComposer timeline is sure to be that fun little extra your homeschool music learning sessions are craving

Timelines are always a popular way of learning all kinds of different material for just about any style learner.  Classical, Charlotte Mason style, hands-on or even traditional learners can all find something useful in finding out about who the master composers were, when they lived, and in which musical period they created their masterpieces.

In many of our religious services we hear beautiful hymns some of which are based on, derived from or created works of the master composers.  God Created Earth and Heaven, which is created from the melody of  Ode to Joy by Ludwig van Beethoven, is just such a hymn.  My children could immediately see the importance of the composers, once they heard this hymn sung years ago.  After just a bit of research, we further learned that many musicians created works inspired by God or their faith.  Of course, this is not true of all composers, but each composer has made a significant contribution to our musical heritage.

Timeline Sample Pieces

To help bring the composers to life for younger learners, we have created a Little Timeline of Composers which features 26 different composers as well as includes one space for another composer of your choice which may not have been included in our resource offering.  Timeline picture cards of each composer are provided with their name, birth and death details, as well as the musical period of their works.  The lines for affixing the cards are simple, bright and colourful.  Set-up instructions are included as well as a very handy composer reference sheet to help you remember the order and details of the composers.

Timelines are always popular with homeschoolers and our special creations seem to be favourites of our regular visitors to our resource website and blog.  We are certain that this one will become a favourite too.  As an added extra, we have created matching Biography Learning Cards featuring the composers.  You will also find a few additional composers available who are not part of the timeline unit to inspire you to add one composer of your own selection to the timeline.  We have left a blank card specifically for this purpose.

ImageNow, if you are thinking the only thing that would make this project even better is matching notebooking sheets, we were thinking that same thing too! :)   Twenty-one page notebooking sets for each composer and their music period are on the way.  About half of them are created and we will work on the rest of the sets to perhaps post later in the week.

Learn more and download the Little Timeline of Composers.

If you know another homeschooling family or teacher who could benefit from this resource, please feel free to introduce them to our blog and website.  We would appreciate it and they hopefully will too.

New Timeline Resource

Image
New timeline helps children learn about the order of just about anything you desire

From the creative mind of Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle comes this fun and easy to make printable timeline that allows learners to solidify content through pictures, quotes, thoughts, and more.  The timeline lines come in various colours and the simple pieces and arrows add charm and versatility to this project.

To use this resource, simply decide on the content you want to cover, print out the desired lines and pieces, cut them out and affix to a surface like a wall, poster board, a door, bulletin board or oversized 3-ringed binder.  Divide out your content by important points, and then note and affix your corresponding pieces to the timeline using the pieces provided or your own pictures or cards.

ImageImage

Timelines can be intimidating for many home learners, newbies and veterans alike.  Charlotte Mason method home learners are encouraged to begin using a timeline resource with their children to assist in the study of history by about the age of ten.  This resource takes the fear out of timelines as it can be used to study a number of subjects including a singular novel, an author's list of works by dates written, the Bible, the development of an invention such as the automobile, the biography of someone - including your child.

NOTE:  Learners can easily make a timeline about their own life and put it on their bedroom door, adding to it weekly, monthly or as events happen throughout the year.  :)  This can easily remind parents of activities that can be used for proof of learning for their own records of that of an formal education program like distance learning.  Timelines don't need to be fancy or big to relay the idea of the succession of events or ideas based on time.

Thanks so much Michelle for sharing this resource with other homeschooling families.  May God bless you and your family always for all that you make and share with others!!

We hope this resource helps you and your children discover and learn about many new and exciting things together.

Life of Christ Notebooking Sheets Pt.II - All Sets Available in English and in Spanish!!

Image
All the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline notebooking sheets are up and ready to go in both English and Spanish!

By the grace of God, I had a patch of time last evening to work a bit on more notebooking sheets to go with the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline.  My youngest changed her mind an decided to use the notebooking sheets instead requesting the mini-books so that gave me a bit more work time.  Perhaps at some point I will get to them.  Our house rule is generally that we make resources for our own needs and then share them with others.  Occasionally someone will request something and we try to help out if we can.  Thus was the case with the Spanish resources.  Xhonane over at Familia Catolica  offered to translate the resources and then I reworked them.  Thus we now have the timeline, timeline pieces and now notebooking sheets to go along with the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline in both English and Spanish.  Thanks, Xhonane.  You will find the Spanish links in red.

Our ministry is about helping homeschooling families worldwide teach about the Catholic faith in a direct answer to the late Pope John Paul II's call for parents to be the first teachers of their children.  As we are just a homeschooling family ourselves running our website in our spare time and out of our own pocket, we appreciate the prayers, positive feedback, and donations of any kind that people share with us.

If you find that you like our resources or find them useful, why not help other homeschoolers find them as well?  It's easy to help us spread the word:  share us on listservs, blogs, Facebook or Twitter.  Consider adding one of our website buttons or blog buttons to your site.  Won't you please help us get the word out?  :)

Life of Jesus Christ Notebooking Sheets - Part I.

Image
Notebooking Sheets to Go along with the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline

Everyone in our house was excited about the Life of Jesus Time Line.  After we assembled and started using our timeline, We began reading and narrating the Knecht book at the breakfast table for the sake our littlest.  Our oldest needed more meat in the readings and so we began finding the passages in the Douay Rheims, which is our favourite version of the Bible - Yeah, St. Jerome!!  This gave way in a very natural progression to the question, "Mom, do we have any notebooking sheets to go with this?" Needless to say, we didn't have any, but we do now. :)

You can find now find notebooking sets that go with the Life of Jesus Christ Timeline project.  Each set is now offered as just one file with 12 page options per file to accommodate writers from K-12.  This also keeps the web page cleaner, as long as the files are not too big to download at once.  (Big files strain our bandwidth and yours too.)   We have almost half of them done right now in English (thus Part I. in the post title).  We are still working on the rest of the set but we thought we had better post what we have so far so that folks could get started.  There are a few extra event sheets on the web page that are not in the timeline project itself because we had already used them previously for our studies.  You will find that the pictures on the notebooking sets match the timeline pictures to help you keep organized.

ImageWe hope to have the rest of the sets done over the next week.  We are planning to try and make a Spanish counterpart at some point as well but I know I won't be able to get to that right away yet.

BTW - I don't need to tell you that the youngest asked me after seeing the notebooking sheets, "Mom, do you have My Mini-books too?"  Yikes!!  So I guess those will also be on the way as well shortly.

Please continue to pray for us in our ministry efforts to serve more families worldwide.

Timeline on the Life of our Lord, Jesus helps learners get to know our Saviour

ImageAs we alluded to the other day, we have finished a project that has been on my mind for over a year now.  This special resource is perfect for any Catholic learner, young or old and is the perfect compliment to New Testament Bible study or Catechism or CCD classes.  It is a simple hands-on pictorial timeline for children.  Created as a go-along resource to Child's Bible History by Rev. F.J.Knecht, D.D. (TAN Books), this new resource has been a big hit with our children.  Although you don't need to use the book to appreciate this resource, it really is such a nice concise read with very easy narration points.  There are 39 different events listed.

Assembly of this timeline is easy.  Print out all files using standard size 8.5"x11" paper.  You can use either heavy bond or regular bond paper.  Cut out timeline pieces, arrange as given in the instruction sheet.  Cut apart timeline cards.  Affix three to a line in the order that they occurred.  A space has been left at the bottom of each of the cards to write in a Bible passage from the Gospels.  This is a perfect bible activity for any aged learner.  Our first grader is very proficient in finding passages in the Bible and I teach this skill in my CCD class for Gr.2+ Sacramental prep.

Image
Sample timeline cards

Many times children or even those new to the faith find it hard to piece together all of the events of our Lord's life.  I wanted a way to help them work through the Bible, learn about Jesus, as well as follow the Mass liturgies in a fun and hands-on way.  I think that this resource will definitely help.

I hope you find this resource helpful in your home or CCD class. :)

Famous Mathematicians Timeline and Pieces

Image
Learn about famous mathematicians in a fun and interactive way.

I came across a dime store find of a book called Historical Connections in Mathematics, Resources for Using History of Mathematics in the Classroom by Wilbert and Luetta Reimer.  Great find!!  It has colouring biography sheets, biography read aloud pages, and cool math activities.  I was so inspired by the fun possibilities for math that we made the book part of our learning year.  We then found the book, Mathematicians Are People, Too, Stories from the Lives of Great Mathematicians by the same authors at the library.  This book is perfect for Charlotte Mason narration! :)  Our daughter loved it and we decided to buy a copy for ourselves.  I began merging the two books for organizational purposes and came up with the the idea for a mini timeline for mathematicians.

We will be adding go-along notebooking sheets to the website shortly to go with this year-long project.  We'll read the books one biographical focus at a time, do some activities for each, finish up with a notebooking page, and then put the corresponding timeline piece on the wall.

Image
ImageThe time line is fast and easy to assemble and is made for small spaces.  (The picture at the left is a quick preview.)  You can use regular 8.5"x11" paper, although we recommend heavier bond paper for longevity.  Full instructions are included in the file.

Print out the pieces in one file - there 18 scholars in all.  Print out the time line in the other file.  The cards could also be used separately for Montessori purposes or for card play.  Just print out two sets for Go Fish and Concentration Matching Type games.

We hope you find this useful.  We will also have a similar timeline for The Life of Jesus Christ coming out very shortly.  Just finishing up the last few pieces.  It is the perfect companion to Child's Bible History by Knecht.

July 2 - Worksheet set Little Liturgical Year July - The Precious Blood of Christ

Image
July is the month dedicated to the Precious Blood.

We start off July with a lovely offering from Michelle over at Thinking Love, No Twaddle.  This 6 page worksheet set Little Liturgical Year July—Precious Blood is quite nice as it gives a heads-up calendar of saints for the month, introduces children to St. Longinus including a colouring sheet, and presents the background of the Holy Grail.  She has even included some timeline cards as well.  Really neat!!  Thanks, Michelle.

Our children love using Michelle's things as they are packed with solid info and neat facts.  These would be neat for use even for CCD reinforcement.  There is always some aspect of art included too, which is really really nice.  Many Catholic parents forget just how important art can be in teaching the faith.  Art provides the validation of history.  There were no cameras, no videos, or even books as we know them in the modern sense.  There was oral tradition and art.

From the Dark Ages and even into the Middle Ages there was no way to help tell the story of Christianity and Catholicism except oral tradition, direct oral teaching, and artwork.  Art in various forms, including stained glass windows, served to teach the uneducated and illiterate the content of the Bible and the truths of the faith for hundreds of years.  Even after Gutenberg created the printing press around 1439, it was a very long time before average people could afford anything printed - including a Bible.  Art study was and still is a very valuable and viable tool to use to teach our families about our Faith.
