There's Just Something About a Pink Bow...

A universal shorthand technique in creating a female counterpart to a male character - in animation and in comics - is to give that counterpart a HAIR BOW... usually pink!

Image

Image

But, how would that play out in real life?  Well, Cici's here to show you!

Image

...And doesn't she look CUTE?  With or without the bow!

Adventures in Comic-Boxing: Disney Mini (not Minnie) Giveaway Comics!

From the pages of BLONDIE #32 (Harvey Comics, Cover Date (July, 1951), we find this interesting promotion for Wheaties breakfast cereal...

Image
Now I wasn't an athlete by any stretch of the imagination, but even *I* would "eat my Wheaties" to get my hands on these!

...Alas, not being alive in 1951, I had to do it the hard way!

BTW, that's Paul Murry doing the cover for "Mickey Mouse and the Magic Mountain", as well as the interior art for "Donald Duck and the Inca Idol" the latter of which I wrote of an amazing fact about my particular copy HERE!

Harvey Eisenberg also did the interior for "Mickey Mouse and the Stagecoach Bandits", so there are lots of unexpected pleasures to be found among these little gems.

And there were FOUR SETS of these (with eight mini-comics per set) released between 1950 and 1951. A worthy pursuit for any Disney comics completist!

EXTRA ADDED ILLUSTRATION:

In my response to our great friend Sergio's comments, I added the following illustration! ...To see why, go to the Comments Section and and soak-up some '60's cereal pop (...with no "snap" or "crackle") culture!

Image

Just for the record: I hung all of those Pooh toys on the rim of my cereal bowl, as pictured on the box front!  I did not, however, attach them to my pencils, as pictured on the box side!  ...That just seemed too painful a thing to do to a beloved Bear of Little Brain!

Happy New Year 2025!

 Happy New Year 2025!

...Or should I, as that famous TV game show goes, phrase it in the form of a question?

 ...Happy New Year 2025?

As far as my answer goes... I DUNNO!

I see some very bad things (or, at the very least, norm-shattering, chaotic things) ahead for 2025 for both our country and the world as a whole! Most of you can probably guess what, as I nonchalantly sidestep the specifics of a topic that is out-of-bounds at this humble Blog.

Of course, I'm referring to the sudden and unexpected cancelation of THE BATMAN & SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERIES...

Image
...An unfortunate occurrence not to be confused with, or mistaken for, any "real world" events of a political nature - though some of those could stand to be suddenly and unexpectedly canceled too! ...Batman and Scooby, we need your team-ups now, more than ever!  ...There, was that nonchalantly-sidestepping enough for you?  If not, I can try again... Oh, you just want me to move on?  Yeah, I think I should too!

On the other hand, looking inward (as opposed to the increasingly ominous view "outside", with no more BATMAN & SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERIES to enjoy every month), things are looking very bright - and that's where I will tend to keep my attentions focused!

Like HERE!

Image

And HERE!
Image

And the all-great, all-new, all-exciting things comics-wise that are coming in 2025... that, darn it all, I STILL can't talk about!  ...Sorry (at least for now!)

Happy New Year 2025!  ...For Real!

TIAHBlog at 16 Presents 16 Covers -- Number Six: M-I-C-K-E- WHY?

C'mon, sing it with me... "Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me?  M-I-C-K-E-Y  M-O-U-S-E!"

Yes, MICKEY MOUSE... M-I-C-K-E-Y  M-O-U-S-E!  I daresay the most oft spelled character name in animation and comics history!  ...Agreed?  ...Sure!

Then how do you explain the cover of MICKEY MOUSE #159 (Gold Key Comics, Cover Date: October, 1975) and its unforgivably-flawed story-describing caption?

Image

"MICKY explores an undersea pirate stronghold..."

Well, I'm not quite sure who "MICKY" is, but I hope "MICKEY", along with GOOFY, is close behind to rescue him if needed!  Who knows, they might have to rescue "GOFY" as well!

A most uncharacteristic front-cover-faux-pas from a publisher not known for making "Charlton-esque" errors!

I can't just let Gold Key sit out there with such a blunder to its credit, so let's find reasons to get it off the hook...

Being underwater, the "E" that should have been in "MICKY" dissolved in the salty brine, or imploded from the intense undersea pressure?  Maybe it even drowned!

Image
 BLUB! BLUB! BLUB! ...Eerie silence!

Perhaps the caption was the work of a German-born copy-writer, from where they spell the character's name as "MICKY MAUS"

Image

Ah, I've got it... It was the first manifestation of the REBELLIOUS SENTIENT COMIC BOOK CAPTIONS from Casty's magnificent sci-fi/horror send-up "Night of the Living Text"... My personal favorite of every Duck and Mouse story I've ever worked on!

Image

It would seem that, as far back as 1975, these evil expeditors of exposition were plotting their eventual all out assault on Mouseton and our hero - and the unthinkable misspelling of his name on a cover was but a test run for something big that finally broke in WALT DISNEY'S COMICS AND STORIES #733 (IDW, Cover Date: July 2016)!

Since 1975, the captions were dormant "Sleeper Agents" just waiting for the right time to strike... and when CAPTIONS are "Sleeper Agents", they are literally  LETTERED... "ZZZZZ!"

Image

YEAH! THAT'S IT... and I'm STICKIN' WITH IT!

So, one more cover "in the books"! ...Cover?  ...Books?  ...Get it?  Cover Number Six: MICKEY MOUSE #159...

Image

...With just a smidgeon of sabotage from a stray sentient caption, that accomplished the deed with... (wait for it)... the Greatest of "E"s!

Come back again tomorrow for... who the heck knows!  Not me, and I run the joint!

Public Domain Mickey with Deb!

It's been too long since we showcased any artwork from our great friend Debbie Anne Perry and, with (one very specific version of) Mickey Mouse in the public domain, Deb has delivered her unique commentary on the subject - along with her wonderful characters FLUFFY AND MERVIN!

Image
GOTTA LOVE THAT!

"Whistle?" "Play 'Turkey in the Straw' on farm animals?" ...YAWN!

Wake me when he becomes a DETECTIVE...

Image

...Or a SPACE EXPLORER...

Image

...Or a SUPER SECRET AGENT...

Image

...Or a PILOT...

Image

...Or a TIME TRAVELER...

Image

...Or DRIVES A GHOST CAR...

Image

...Or becomes an UNDERWATER EXPLORER...

Image

...Or even a (sorta sloppy) LUMBERJACK!

Image

But, especially when he meets THIS GUY!

Image

Image

Image

...Um, "SteamBLOT Willie", anyone?

Image

Until then, Fluffy and Mervin can probably put him to good use...

Image
...Um, g-good use?

Image

...Then again, maybe not!

Perhaps we should wait around until PETE joins Mickey in the public domain...

Image

After all, if "Steamboat Willie" is in the public domain... wouldn't that also apply to PETE (...and, of course, Minnie) - those specific versions, that is!  ...And Pete, whatever version, would certainly liven things up!

Image
Right, as usual, Mickey! "There IS only one flaw!" It'll be quite a while until THESE VERSIONS fall into the public domain!  ...Pete never figured on that, th' big lummox!

But, hey... If I just tap my foot through another decade or so, will THE PHANTOM BLOT (...OR "The Blot", as he was originally called) be there as well?

Image
...THIS VERSION anyway?

Maybe then, I can REALLY do "SteamBLOT Willie"!

Oh, there's just so much to "unpack" from Steamboat Willie's Steamer Trunk!  ...Sorry, couldn't resist.

Let's do so in the Comments Section... and have a great time, as we did so often in those good old days... before they, too, eventually become public domain!

Image

For instance, can PD Mickey even be presented IN COLOR... or with a COLOR BACKGROUND like this?

Even if not, Deb's fully in compliance, as we all knew she would be...

Image
REALLY GREAT JOB, DEB!

Coming to (Nay, NOW AT) a Target Store Near You!

A short while ago, I received my contributor's copy of THIS MAGNIFICENT BOOK from Fantagraphics... and is it ever amazing!

Image

At a whopping 256 pages and a size of approximately 13.5" by 10", its prodigious production values, combined with its super-size, make a fitting tribute for Disney's 100 Years Celebration!

It is a Target Stores exclusive, so you'll have to get it there rather than your usual sources of such books, but, having now held it in my hot little hands... YES!

Image

Just some of the highlights would include Carl Barks' "Mystery of the Swamp", Don Rosa's "His Majesty McDuck" (my personal favorite Rosa story!), Super Goof's "The Thief of Zanzipar" by Bob Ogle and Paul Murry from SUPER GOOF # 1 (1965), a beautiful Seven Dwarfs story by Romano Scarpa... a famous-in-many-lands-but-this-one Tony Strobl story with Donald, Fethry, and Scrooge written by Dick Kinney....

...And a Casty Mickey Mouse story that features another of Casty's recurring characters that has yet to be seen in the United States - enthusiastic oceanographer Estrella Marina!

I did the Translation and Dialogue (for whatever that's worth) in support of a great story - and what may very well be Casty's BEST ART!  Certainly the best I've ever seen!  Some of it is actually breathtaking!

Aw, heck... THE WHOLE BOOK is breathtaking so, as unthinkable as it might be, I'm going to close by saying... stop reading my Blog - and start reading this book!

...You can always come back to the Blog later.  Promise I'll be here!

Oh, and when you DO come back, take a peek at the Chip 'n' Dale post I put up this morning... which has become overshadowed by this BIG BREAKING NEWS!

Image
...That's breaking NEWS, not breaking HEADS!

The Secrets of "Mickey Mouse Super Secret Agent"!

One of the most fascinating aspects of the creatively fertile period of the mid-1960s for American Disney comics was - and continues to be - the three "subset" issues of Gold Key's MICKEY MOUSE title (issues 107-109) dubbed "Mickey Mouse Super Secret Agent"!

Covers and first page scans below...

Written by Don R. Christensen, drawn by Dan Spiegle and Paul Murry, and lettered by Rome Siemon, this alas-short-lived experiment continues to resonate with fans (like me) and draw the curious (like some of you?) to this day.

My original "comics mentor" (decades before I thought I could ever break into comics and text-article writing), Mark Evanier has posted a comprehensive look at "Mickey Mouse Super Secret Agent" at his Blog - and, with full credit and appreciation to Mark, I link to it HERE!

Enjoy!

Adventures in Comic-Boxing: The One-Shot "SUPER" Super Goof Logo!

The Gold Key/Whitman logo for Super Goof, remained fairly consistent over the 19 years and #74-issue run of the title.

Image
From first to last:

ImageImage

But, for ONE EXCEPTION... SUPER GOOF #46 (Gold Key Comics, Cover Date: April, 1978)...

Image

...And it's peculiar attempt to simulate the SUPERMAN logo (in "Goofy-style"?).

Image

SUPERMAN #338 (DC Comics. Cover Date: August, 1979)... which, oddly (...and apropos of little, unless you like making these connections as much as I do), had a Whitman variant (below).

Image

And, speaking of "odd", the "Superman-style logo" sported by SUPER GOOF #46 was not even specifically designed for that particular cover...

Image

...Because the cover was a REPRINT from SUPER GOOF #9 (Gold Key Comics, Cover Date: December, 1967)!

Image

How or why this logo came to be - and the reason for its lasting for only one issue (...maybe DC raised an objection?) - is just another one of those things about Western Publishing that is forever lost to history!

Image

SUPERMAN #338 cover by Ross Andru and Dick Giordano.

SUPER GOOF #9 and 46 covers by Paul Murry.

Who drew the LOGO for SUPER GOOF #46 is anybody's guess!
