Bangkok Hat 2009

Bangkok Hat 2009 was so awesome that I'm actually going to blog.

I decided to go for this year's Bangkok Hat, a pretty big Ultimate Frisbee mixer/tourney. In the online registration, we have to rate ourselves based on our skills, catching/running/throwing etc, then the organizers sort people into teams so that every team is about equal in skill.

About 15 people from Malaysia went, including me, Ethan (CHS), Wallace (Jiu Hwei) from HELP, Jyn, David, Martin, Carroll, Miguel, Darren (Sunway) and five from Inti Nilai (Nellie, Ji Mi, Jessica, Shen and Sue Ray).

Friday, 20th Feb, followed Ethan to the LCCT for our 8pm flight to Bangkok, met up with Mei Jyn and David, then Darren, Carroll and the Intians at the terminal. Airasia so cheap! RM200+ for a round trip, including tax! :O MAS fail >_>

After a two-hour flight, we arrived in Bangkok and took a cab to the Sukhumvit area, some big tourist spot with like 15 roads or something. A bunch of us were staying at Suk11, a REALLY nice backpacking place on Sukhumvit 11 (creative hostel name huh -_-). Luckily, the registration party was just down the street at some hotel.

After paying the 2500THB (~RM250) registration fee, I got a goodie bag and a temporary tattoo to identify myself as AWESOME I mean as a participant. Also found what team i was in (Deep purple)
Goodie bag had some.. interesting stuff:
Disc, Suntan lotion, Muscle balm, Wristband, Headband, Tourney schedule, Durex flavoured condoms (Banana, strawberry and orange) Lol.
ImageTourney disc.

Oh yeah, did I mention.. I FORGOT MY CAMERA T_T so all the pics are from facebook/tourney photographer.

ImageSo after that, we went to check in at Suk11, which is AWESOME.
ImageThe humble entrance.

It's like.. only one small entrance, and it's surrounded by restaurants, massage places, shops, etc. The lobby is pretty small:
ImageAnd there's this fridge there with like a gazillion bottles of RO water, 6 Baht (60 cents) each. You're supposed to put 6 baht into this coin box thingy on top of the fridge then take the bottles. No one would know if you didn't pay, but come on, it's just 60 freaking cents. There's even a slot at the bottom of the coin box where you can jiggle coins out in case you want change!

When I first went in, it's like, Oh Fuck this place is tiny. Then we climbed the SUPER steep stairs to the first floor, and.. it was still fucking tiny. Then we climbed another flight of stairs.

It turns out they bought out the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th floors of the whole row of shops :O
Meaning the place actually has a real lotta rooms. It's like a huge treehouse past the 1st floor! After passing the stairs, there's a buncha common rooms with all sortsa things, showers, toilets, huge flat-screen tv, computers with internet, a buncha books (they do that thing where you can take any book you want and you're encouraged to leave books behind!), a nice veranda etc. Then there's a REALLY REALLY LONG hallway that's kinda treehouse-ish.
ImageRooms on either side of it. See the shimmering things on the left and right of the wooden path? At first glance it looks like either water or even the floor below. It's actually mirrors! So super cool!
ImageThe rooms are really nice too, really really really clean (something very important for me) with aircond! (didn't expect AC :O) and curtains and drawers and hangers and lamps and towel/clothes racks and everything you'd need XD so nice. Some rooms even have their own toilets (like Wallace's) and they're super clean. I shared a room with Ethan, we had to use the common toilets/showers, but those are spotless too! These people really know how to run the place.

On all the non-wooden walls in the place, travelers from all over leave their marks:
ImageEvery floor has these.. it's awesome. This place is fantastic, the location's great, it's really clean, pretty cheap, comfortable, has good food all around and is just.. awesome! XD will definitely stay here again.

On the street itself (Suk 11) were all manners of things imaginable. Coconut sellers, mobile noodle shops, 7-11s, Thai massage parlors, bars, clubs, hotels, hostels, PORK SATAY VENDORS <3>:O so there were soldiers marching around all day and a buncha flags/helicopters/weird army thingies all over the place. The field was HUGE! Gigantic! 6 games were held at the same time, so yeaaah.

They had free bagels on the field (and jam/peanut butter as spreads) and fruits like bananas and tangerines. Bagels were awesome. Nice second breakfast.
A coupla pics of the field:
ImageThere were these big tents all over the place where we all hid from the sun. Damn hot lah for the whole two days! No rain at least, nice XD
ImageImageImageThe captain's meeting. Colorful ain't it.

My captain was a tall guy called Chris, fantastic handler but somehow can't jump (self-proclaimed/admitted). Cool guy, part of his intro: "If you don't like what I'm doing, please tell it to me straight. If you Do like what I'm doing, please bring me beer. "

My team had a real wide range of people. Charlotte from Australia's Drop Bears, Lesley from Singapore's Freakshow, Darren from Sunway, American Arjon (as tall as Sridhar) in the middle of his world-travels, Lance the super pro swimmer who's Chris' trainer for stuff like Ironman and the like @_@, another Chris, Carroll (not Carroll Moreton) from the states, Amy and Cha from dunno where, traveler Jeff, and Sam Berry, the phenomenal handler for Shanghai's Pyro who won last year's Singapore Open.

We had to come up with a team name and eventually settled for "Purple People Eaters Are Better Than Your Mom" :D Each team had this balloon mascot thing, ours was a tiger.
ImageGuy carrying most of the mascots.

Anyway on to the games. It was held in league format for first day and everyone was repooled the second day. We had a bye on the first match and spent the 90 mins stretching/warming-up mixing around. Our real first match was against the white team (creatively named "White" -_-), who would eventually win the whole tournament.

Somehow I got lucky and scored three or four points (assisted one) at the start of the match! Holy mother wtf! I guess that stupid running/sprinting training came in handy after all! XD
ImageNice pic of me scoring against white. Somehow I look REALLY WEIRD in this pic. Check out the tan lines, that's from playing Ultimate in MALAYSIA. Got sooo much darker over the weekend.

Wallace, Sue Ray and Martin were all in white. Martin, the awesome kilt-wearing handler he is, was the captain. He played pretty much the whole tournament with their team mascot sticking outta his kilt, like so...
ImageImageIsn't that just like.. Awesome award of the year Lols. Not really very.. aerodynamic but awesome nonetheless.

Yeah anyway, I'll spare you guys the technicalities on how we ALMOST lost :D Strategies and shit I'll post on my team blog, not here.
Well we were winning 7-1 in the first half, then they caught up and almost overtook us @_@ final score was 12-10 I think, really really close.
WIN!!! XD We were the only team in the whole tourney who beat them.

Right after that was lunch break. An hour to eat the SUPER DAMN FREAKING GOOD food they put there. Green curry and rice and noodles and dessert and chicken curry and putumayam (swt) and ETC ETC :D The dude in the viking hat was like walking past us in the line,
"Be really careful people, the food is AWESOOOOME. "
ImageViking Guy. *edit* thought he was from Antarctica, turns out that was a different guy :( *edit*

Yeah they were going green for the tourney this year, there were recycling bins here and there, and plates were non-disposable and were rented out for a minimal fee. There were like booths where NGOs promoted their save the elephants/save the environment/recycle stuff.

There was also a beer fountain! Singha beer kindly sponsored a pretty much unlimited supply of beer. Everyone was told to bring their own mugs/cups, and there was even a creative beer mug contest. More on that later.
ImageViking Guy at beer booth with the decently hot beer chicks.

After lunch.. Three matches in a row wtf ==" die lah.

Second match was against Red/Black stripes (Caged Monkeys). Another narrow win for us, with our superb handlers (Sam, Carroll, Jeff, Charlotte.. ). WIN!! Was a universe point (tied when time was up, whoever got the last point wins)

Third match against yellow (forgot the name, sorry!), Nellie's team. Also the Viking's team. We lost :( by two points or so. How sad. Fourth match against light green (Also forgot), they had this African-American guy who had some stupid speed @_@ could keep up with him when he was cutting around here and there, cause his moves were obvious, but got pwned on the straight run against him. And he dives too! wtf @_@ Lost to green by quite a bit.

That was all the matches for the day; they provided dinner, which was again AWESOOOOMEEE, damn I love Thai food.
ImageAWESOOOOME :D Burgers, really meaty sausages, lots more curry, rice, nice dessert, 3 types of pasta with 3 types of sauce, lotsa deep-fried stuff, veggies, chips, more curry, more dessert XD
Say it with me... AWESOOOME.

After that we (Intians, David, Ethan, Me) went to the Chatuchak weekend market, which is like the biggest fucking pasar malam you'll see in your life. It's probably got more ground space than a floor at Mid Valley @_@ but we were pretty late so they were closing. I got a my nice Thai linen shirt and David got some shorts.

Went back to shower and stuff... all really sticky and dirty, plus ultra tired. There was a party that night though, at a nearby pool club, with the theme "Timewarp: 3009"; dress like you've come from the future, 1000 years from now :D

We had no costumes, Ethan, Wally and I went as... ninja terrorists. You'll see in abit. I wore the CHS team shirt too, cause in 1000 years everyone's gonna be playing frisbee :D

At the entrance we were given glo-sticks, then led to the jello shots :D good shit. Unlimited drinks of any kind (OMGWTF!!! :O) for the whole night (OMGWTF OMGWTF). The pool tables were nicely covered up and there were plates and plates of spring rolls, fried chicken and dip. DELICIOUS STUFF. Here's what some people came as:
ImageHazmat suit, Stereotypical weird future style (cool though), blue alien, more future style.
ImageThe girl from "The Fifth Element"!!
ImageRobots.
ImageAliens from the Alien series.. I think. There was girl who came in a really nicely-done robot suit, the robot thing that heroine in the show uses to fight the aliens! No pic though.
ImageDoraemon on the left. DAMN CUTE LAH BAHAHAHA
ImageYellow thing's the back of the aforementioned Alien-fighting robot.
ImageRed girl with jetpacks (she took off the jetpacks already I think)
ImageCALVIN AND HOBBES!!! OMG XDXD SO CUTE!
ImageBehold the ninja-terrorists.ImageMe lol.
ImageShen, Ji Mi, Jessica, Ethan, David, Wallace.
ImageNellie, Shen, Wallace, Ji Mi, Jessica.

Then they brought out a Mummy, some.. Thing all wrapped up. They got someone take off the bandages, and..
ImageIt was a dude in short shorts. WTF!?!?!

Then some transvestites took the stage
ImageThe one in the black corset sang some weird song about.. transsexual transylvanian transvestite. Then he got everyone to do the TIMEWARP!!! Some really old song from a musical. Really catchy, we were all humming/singing it the next day @_@ Youtube it.

After that we all crashed in Wallace's room.. The 5 Inti people, Ethan and I. Played some games, chatted abit then all went back our rooms to sleep.

22nd Feb, Sunday; Final day of the matches. More bagels and fruit. Somehow our team placed 11th/15th ==" 2 wins 2 losses at 11th?! WTF!? yeah so anywaaaay our first match was with light purple. There ain't room enough for two purples in this town. Also, Sam Berry's brother, Jonathan (I think) was in that team, even more reason to win :D. Not to mention the winners go up to the A pool and the losers go down to the B pool.
ImageJon Berry with ours and White's mascots.

WE WON (universe point)!!!! :D

Next match was with Camo, the team with the most.. interesting colour, camouflage. Like, army forest soldier camouflage thing, ya get me?! Kay. WE WON AGAIN!!! :D Once again it was a universe point. This shows how well the organizers balanced the teams. Great job, TDs :) To the semifinals!!

Our next match was against Blue, "Waterboys" who were seeded 1st ==" SHIIIIIT. We were pulling a close game.. for the first 4 points. Then we lost pretty bad. I D-ed a tall fast caucasian guy! He started sprinting deep as his teammate sent a long one, and I followed, overtook him then whacked the disc outta the air. Super happy moment. Yeah still lost.

There was no 3rd-4th placing match, so we tied for 3rd with Yellow, Nellie's team. Our teams had a boat race :D A boat race is a beer-chugging contest where two rows of beer cups are set up, then teams race to finish them, relay-style. We won! lols.
ImageReady..
ImageSam as the finisher.
ImageEPIC WIN! :D

After that, everyone settled down to watch the finals, Whites against Blue. It was a REALLY close match, 1-1, 2-2, 3-3... up to like 7-7 or something, then white took a nice lead and won by two points.
ImageGareth, the white team's MVP, skying someone from blue. That guy's AWESOME. He's a serious layout monster, could see some massive damage on his waist from all the layouts (dives). Like.. MASSIVE damage. Wtf. Super bloody, cuts in grazes on bruises. Insane guy.

Through the 2nd day, a buncha Thai girls were running around giving people "Apple Pie Shots", where they tild your head back, pour in apple juice and vodka, spray in some whipped cream and add some cinnamon for the finisher. Then you shake your head really vigorously to mix up the cinnamon and swallooow. Good stuff! Gotta try that again. Tasty.
ImageDavid getting his shot. Darren was next lols.
ImageJess "tahan"ing the apple pie shot XD

There weren't any pics of me though : ( Maybe some in Jess' camera. Will update if there are.

After that, there was a "Tranny match" where a buncha gay fellas challenged any players to a casual game (of frisbee duh). They were called the Fags and Fabs, with a fancy stick figure 69 as their logo Lol. Challengers could come from any teams, but had to be shirtless.
ImageLols. Some girls put glitter on our bodies too -_-" wtf.

Awards ceremony. 1st and 2nd place for each pool (A and B) got medals and a bottle of alcohol they had to finish there and then.
ImageMiguel with some Thai Song whiskey. Caustic stuff.
ImageJessica's team got runner-up in the B Pool. Ethan was in Blue, Waterboys, and got 2nd. That's his medal around Nellie, and it says.... "Almost Champion" XD

The winner of the beer mug contest..ImageIt's a... boob. With a nipple you can drink out of.

Each team's MVP got a prize, and the person who traveled the furthest did too (Antarctica duh).

Pics
ImageRandom girl with mascots. Just thought the pic's nice XD
ImageNellie, Shen, Jyn, Darren, Jessica, Ethan, Me.
ImageMy AWESOME team :D

After that we went back, showered then went out for dinner. Intians, Jyn, David, Ethan, Wallace and I. Went to some food court place somewhere for Thai food.. shitting lotta mosquitos, food was pretty good though :D

After that we went for THAI MASSAGE :D Everyone except Jyn, David and I went for some foot massage. We went for full body (Jyn's with oil too). Was really good. I was feeling like absolute CRAP before the massage, aching all over from the tournament. Could barely walk. The masseuse was a muscular lady who was really damn pro. I suspect she was once a pro wrestler somewhere; coulda sworn my back was gonna break at one point. The massage parlor was really nice too, very, very clean, cosy, quite, nice bed/mattress things, nice robes, curtains, soft music, dim lights.. the works :D Even gave us some tea when we were done. All for 300 Baht (RM30) an hour. Felt so good after the massage, aches and pains almost all gone! Coulda gone for another tourney! Kay maybe not another tourney but FELT LIKE HEAVEN LAH. Fantastic job she did, gave her a 40 Baht tip.

Crashed at Wally's again.. though SOMETHING happened (bahahaha!) and we left and slept.

Ethan and Darren left early the next morning, so Wallace, David, Jyn and I went shopping. We went to Siam Paragon for food first; they have this AMAZING food court which uses a point card system - top up the card to buy food, get refunded for unused points. Food was fantastic. We had.. Herbal duck noodles, Thai omelette, Roast pork, Tom Yum Noodles, Pad Thai (Thai Chau Kuey Tiao, damn nice), Thai curry with rice, couple more noodle dishes and.. MANGO STICKY RICE. This stuff's like the best freaking dessert you'll ever eat in your life. It's sweetened glutinous rice and mango drizzled with some condensed milk/coconut milk mix. AWESOME STUFF. OMG it's the best. Show you the pic.
ImageWhen you eat the mango or the sticky rice alone, it's like.. okay okay lah. But when you put both in together, BOOM! Dessert orgasm in your mouth. Fantastic stuff. We stole some off David first, then went to get three more plates of the stuff. DELICIOUS STUFF.
ImageThere's a pic of Wallace having a mango-asm, but I don't have it yet.. will update.

After that we caught a cab to the airport and flew off. Bought a bottle of chivas at the Thai airport, 900 Baht (RM90), quite cheap lah.

All in all, a fantastic 4 days in Thailand. Tournament was very well organized; I had a lot of fun and made a buncha new friends. Also picked up some new frisbee skills to use back home :D Stayed at a great place, had some fantastic food and played some hard matches, loved the trip and will DEFINITELY go again next year.

p.s. Left my nice Bally belt at Suk11 T-T the only sad part of the trip T-T
