Domenico Barra a (Dirty) New Media Artist

Image

Domenico Barra is a (Dirty) New Media Artist based in Napoli (Italy) working with digital media with a major focus on internet culture.Tumblr and Support @ Patreon!

Dirty New Media (DNM) is a term first used by the artist Jon Cates. J. Cates, who is also the Chair of the Film, Video, New Media & Animation department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, says Dirty New Media’s mission is “to express a contrast with the kind of cleanliness that is [associated] with more commercial or corporate styles of digital art and design. It refers to a menagerie of alternative practices and subcultures spanning from punk and digital sampling to piracy and pornography”.

Image

quote [I am interested in subcultures and tabood human acts, their consumption in privacy and distribution in society. Porn is not a mere representation of sexual fantasies. Porn is the ultimate argument to address history, politics, art, or economy. I use copies of copyright protected contents to discuss industries and lobbies, production, distribution and appropriation and also, roles of sexes, money, porn as a proper expression of capitalistic society.

Image

I produce “partial” (dirty) record of the wide and wild range of pornographic material available online, selected, remixed and contextualized in various projects such as Pirate Porno Material, Pirate Porno Material 2, Wrecked, Red Link District, Head(Her)Less and A picture is never private (anymore) and Dirty Screens. The works were produced using the technique of databending that consists of using softwares not designed for the image editing task such as text editing and music softwares. Through these process I manage to corrupt/glitch digital format such as .jpg, .gif, .avi, .bmp, .raw, .tif, .iff, .png and so on.

Image

I have been working with many media, focusing my practice and research on topics related to politics and human behaviors. Corrupted governments, mafias, corporations, an art form and production as a sort of rebellion, sabotage, activism, I always tried to create works that would shock people and create debates. When a subject is too complex, I realized that people would tend to get bored or disturbed and ignore the crucial part of it, I needed to find something that could help me in analyzing and represent those topics, or at least some of them, that wouldn't bother people, or bore them, so I thought about sex.  I believe that one of the most complete subject, a subject that touches many of the aspects of our lives as part of a society is sex, its depiction in mass media, from the internet to advertisement, politics related to gender, sexism, the economy of sex, copyright, and so on].

I Know Where Your Cat Lives

Image
I Know Where Your Cat Lives is a data experiment that visualizes a sample of 1 million public pics of cats on a world map, locating them by the latitude and longitude coordinates embedded in their metadata. The cats were accessed via publicly available APIs provided by popular photo sharing websites. The photos were then run through various clustering algorithms using a supercomputer at Florida State University in order to represent the enormity of the data source.

More Reallifecams: The Insecam Project

Image
The Insecam Project is the world biggest directory of online surveillance cameras. A girl in Brasil, A garden, a room, an hairdresser in France, something in Sweden, a family in Kiev, a shop in Tallin, an hospital or sort... in Spain, not sure about that in Madrid, a pharmacy in Oviedo, a pool, another pool in Korea, a school or sort, flowers...
The coordinates of the cameras are approximate. They point to the ISP address and not the physical address of the camera. This information is accurate only to a few hundred miles. The coordinates are provided only to locate the city where the camera is located, but not it's exact position or address.

Webdriver Torso: YouTube mystery

quote [On 23 September 2013 at 14:45, YouTube user Webdriver Torso quietly uploaded a video.
The mysterious 11-second sequence of red and blue rectangles could easily have been lost, unexplained and unappreciated among YouTube's plethora of kittens and music videos. But 28 minutes later Webdriver uploaded an almost identical video, and another an hour after that, and another, until eight months later - apparently happy with nearly 80,000 clips - they fell silent, with 236 hours of video to their name.
Almost all of the uploads follow the same pattern - 10 slides, each with a red rectangle, a blue rectangle and a computer-generated tone.
The shapes change size and the notes change pitch. Each video appears to be unique, but the format stays the same].

Live Sex on the PS4

Image
quote [Provided you're not "lucky" enough to catch them live, YouTube and Reddit are the new homes for clips of people doin' it live on their PlayStation 4. No "game shows", no pretence, just couples filming themselves hard at it. On Reddit - I'm not going to link it because even the banner image of the subreddit is super-NSFW - the vids roam free, but even on YouTube, some escape Google's army of robot censors].

Visit any place available in Street View by entering a location, drag the map to browse around and drop the little guy on a road. It works best in environment with large buildings surrounding the streets. Some locations need a little more imagination than others.

Escape from Mr. Birdy Room

Image
quote [A funky beat, a big screen television, a bunch of puzzles, and several not at all creepy bird statues watching you from every single angle... it beats me why you'd want to Escape from Mr. Birdy Room (apart from the aforementioned peeping peepers), but Tesshi-e's latest free escape game wants you to do just that].

Interactive Chart of Biblical Contradictions

Image
quote [A few years ago, computer science whiz Chris Harrison created a beautiful visualization linking up every cross reference in the Bible. So, for example, if a verse in the New Testament referred back to a verse in the Old Testament, there was an arc drawn between the two chapters they were in (the vertical lines at the bottom represent the number of verses in that chapter). Turns out there are 63,779 cross references in the Bible (and that many arcs in the image)! If it’s any indication of how complex this image is, the high-resolution version is more than 100MB large.

In 2009, graphic designer Andy Marlow used Harrison’s work as his inspiration to created a similar visual for Sam Harris‘ Reason Project. This time, though, he only included arcs representing contradictions in the Bible.

Now, computer programmer Daniel G. Taylor has taken all that data and turned it into a visual masterpiece.
His website, BibViz (Bible Visualization), gives you the same linking arcs as before, but when you hover over one of them, it lights up and tells you in the upper right-hand corner of the screen which verses are being linked together. Click on an arc and it takes you directly to those verses as compiled in the Skeptics Annotated Bible]
